About Scott Dugas & Laura Wilkinson

I grew up in Yarmouth, ME and on Casco Bay. My family started and still owns a boat yard on the Royal River in Yarmouth.

My parents, brothers and I built a family cottage on Lower Goose Island in 1974.

Scott Dugas & Laura Wilkinson purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Scott Dugas & Laura Wilkinson chose Harpswell

In 1985, I bought property on Lower Goose and built this cottage and bunk house with my own family.

I have the good fortune and pleasure to enjoy nearly every weekend from early spring to late fall on Lower Goose. I have created several trails for walking and exploring the island. I truly enjoy my time on Lower Goose, whether I am relaxing, enjoying the summer sunshine or chipping brush and working in the woods.

I have a lobster boat, with which I lobster in the summer and scallop in the winter.

I look forward to my future retirement on Lower Goose Island.

What makes this cottage unique

Lower Goose is a slice of heaven. Close and convenient to the mainland, but far enough removed to let the day to day routine evaporate and relaxation to take over.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Spent the week experience the slice of heaven on Lower Goose Island. Kendall had high expectations for the cottage and the ambience, but these hight hopes were not even close to the reality which far exceeded anything imagined. Highlights were lobster dinner cooked on the dock, sunset boat excursions around the island, kayaking out to seal ledge, and relaxing in the salt air and sunshine.

Simply wonderful!

When I asked my husband what he wanted for his 50th birthday he said, "I want to be somewhere beautiful in Maine, kayaking on the ocean." Traditionally we'd gone up to Acadia for such getaways, where we were guaranteed natural beauty and the possibility to observe wildlife. To be honest, I had never even heard of Lower Goose Island but due to time constraints (we only had 4 days), I needed to find something closer to us than Acadia. So I took the risk and booked Scott and Laura's place and boy am I happy that I did!! This was one of the best little vacations we've ever had and my husband keeps saying that it was the best birthday present he's ever received!

The scenery is not as dramatic and rugged as other parts of the Maine coast, the beauty here is more quiet and peaceful. We had four children with us so we were thrilled with the calm water and rocky but still walkable shoreline. The children waited anxiously every day for the tide to go out so that they could comb the rocks for shells, horseshoe crabs, beach glass and even seal bones! Better still, they were able to kayak alongside us around the island itself and to the smaller islands close by. One of the children had no kayaking experience and managed the waters here just fine. Even our 7 year old daughter could paddle along in a separate kayak while tethered to our kayak with a rope (and of course they all had life vests). The interior of the island is beautiful as well, with nice woodland trails to explore.

The cottage itself is really lovely and very well equipped. The kitchen lacks for nothing and the beds are all comfortable. There are also plenty of little nooks for people to disappear into with a book or for a nap. We were there at the end of October so needed to use the wood stoves for heat at night and they all functioned well. There are two out houses, one close to the cottage, one sitting further back in the woods. As far as outhouses go, these are comfortable, well built and clean. When I'm at home, I rarely go outside at night so this forced me out in the evening, which was also a treat! I sincerely enjoyed the quiet and the sight of the moon shining on the water, something that I would've missed with indoor plumbing!

Scott and Laura are exceptionally good hosts! They did everything they could to make our stay and my husband's birthday a great one!

To sum up, this place is heavenly! We loved every minute of our stay and hope to return again in the future!

This island and cottage are beautiful, remote, clean, and stress-relieving. I was turning 50. My wife and mother complained that I am impossible to buy things for. I told them that it was because I don't need any more things in my cluttered life. So they put their brains together and decided to give me this experience. And what a fantastic experience it was! I love natural beauty and was not disappointed. Kayaking around the island (takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the tide) I saw lots of seals (found two seal skulls by spotting eagles on the shore eating something), saw two dolphins, raccoons and then at least 10 bird species. The massive eagles were the most impressive, though there were also cormorants, grebes, ducks, herons, gulls, loons and ospreys. My children and nephew, ages 7, 10, 11 and 12 were beside themselves playing on the island. There was hardly any quarreling because they were all so busy exploring and playing. When not in the kayaks they were picking along the shore catching crabs, shrimps and snails. At night they were out like lights. On the way back, the owners Scott and Laura hauled out their lobster traps, which was fun and educational for both kids and adults. Scott and Laura are just the nicest people. They treated us like family, not like renters. Because we stayed at the end of October there were hardly any others on the island besides our group. It was just so peaceful. We kept the house warm with the two excellent woodstoves. After the kids went to bed, we adults drank a bit and talked, cleaned up after dinner, and read by the propane lanterns. When we needed more light or to plug in laptops we just turned on the generator. The house itself is lovely. It is not a camp or cabin, but a well-built house with big windows that look out over the sea. In the morning the sunrises were a deep and glowing pink and orange. At night the sky was full of stars until the moon came out. We used their telescope to look at craters. There is nothing negative to say. Two things that those used to creature comforts might not like are the propane heated shower (hot but little pressure, but who cares, it was hot) and the outhouses. There are two good outhouses. But for people expecting a house toilet, sorry. At night we used the sit-a-potty because that was easier than walking the 35 feet to the outhouse. We look forward to going back to this rugged paradise and warm hospitality again in the future. Thanks for the best ever birthday present!

Exceptional! For adventurous adults & families looking for a true getaway from the normal routine

We loved this place from the moment we arrived! The cottage & guest bunk house were very clean and well appointed, with comfortable accomodations for multiple families and friends. Our gracious and accomodating hosts made certain that we had everything necessary for a wonderful vacation.

Natural beauty & wildlife could be seen everywhere we turned. Watched waterfowl and Osprey fishing for their meals as the tide came and left. Seals gathered within eyesight on a nearby ledge and a Bald Eagle was spotted soaring high above the water's edge. Words can't adequately describe the beautiful scenery that surrounds you with a constantly changing seascape.

This is truly a boaters paradise! Exceptional deepwater dock & moorings, with popular anchorage within view. Easy access via boat to Harpswell, Freeport, Yarmouth & points south into Portland. Watch lobster boats, pleasure-craft, & kayaks cruising nearby waters. Explore the many nearby islands of Casco Bay.

Local seafood is available from a number of nearby sources and the cottage is well equiped for the do-it-yourself lobster & clam feast.

Our teenage children enjoyed swimming off the dock, kayaking to nearby seals, exploring island trails, playing board games in the cottage, sunbathing & reading (yes, reading "real books"). A highlight activity was learning how to pull & bait lobster traps with our hosts, on their incredible 41 foot custom built boat.

The cottage on Lower Goose Island is highly recommended for those wanting to unplug from the mainland to enjoy all that the wonderful islands of Casco Bay have to offer. We'll definately be back!
