About David Hopp

I am a 2nd. Generation Master Builder, Architect, and a very happy father to Kylie.

I began my career very early under the mentor-ship of my father, Robert Hopp. I started working with my father at an early age, always knowing I would grow up to design and build the best and most beautiful homes, remodels and additions possible.

Bob, as most people called him, had a very strong work ethic. He took a great deal of pride in the work he did for others, always putting forth his best efforts and treating people fairly. Whether it was building a bench or turning out a 100,000+ sq. ft. industrial complex, his “do it right & get it done” attitude built him a reputation that preceded his arrival on the job site that wasn’t measured in minutes, but by miles.

Clients who hired him knew in advance that when he made them a promise, he fulfilled that promise. And what I remember, most of all is that he loved it. Every minute of it! He loved the challenge of “getting it done - on time, and done right.” He was gregarious and hard working, almost to a fault. He loved to entertain. Current events, political commentary, and conversation were probably second only to his love of the written word. And his love for the written word was eclipsed only by the love we saw demonstrated towards Lois, his wife and my mother. He did so much for his family, and friends. Because his parents left this world when he was still very young, he understood, first-hand, how important family is, what it means to have one, and be part of it. As it is said, “The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree,” and I gleaned many wonderful attributes from working with dad.

These are the cornerstones, from which I fashion my life, the business, and fatherhood.

Outdoor mountain sports, woodworking, and poetry are my avocations.

A perfect home for our snowy getaway

  • 5 of 5

Not only was the snow awesome, but so was this home! The home is cozy, but spacious. We enjoyed the fireplace with the perfect view of the snow outdoors, as well as the lake. We enjoyed cooking in the well equipped kitchen, but were close to many other eateries if cooking isn't your thing. Would definitely stay here again!

No Shoe Rule Taints a Good Time

  • 1 of 5

Let me begin by saying I & family have stayed in numerous VRBO / HomeAway / other vacation properties, have experienced an array of owners & their particulars. We've had all positive experiences in our stays, never lost deposits & always left on good terms.

David owns a nice property and we were excited to spend some quality, family time in the property. My first impression of the 'high' (in excess of four figures) deposit & no-shoe rule should have deterred me from booking with this owner. My wife & I also have a no shoe rule in our home; as did our other guests. We all believe this is best way to easily maintain one's home & avoid damage & tracking-in unwanted debris into our homes. Essentially, we all easily complied with the no shoe rule...for 99% of our stay. Our 20 month-old had pushed a plastic LEGO box (provided by the owner) on the floor & scuffed the finish in a few places. These are scuff marks to the finish & not scratches to the finish or wood. The owner's reaction is to withhold our entire 'four-figure' deposit. This is an EXTREME reaction to some scuff marks which can easily be buffed-out of a small area of a 2850 sq foot property. The owner is stating the ENTIRE floors need refinished due to these scuff marks and 4 sets shoe prints...REALLY!? Further, while the floors are nice they are far from perfect! Lastly, are these floors even appropriate for a vacation rental?

The owner also doesn't appropriately / sufficiently supply the property. For example, there was no shampoo / conditioners in bathrooms, few linens & we ran out of dishwashing detergent on our 2nd day. Sticky notes on drawers directed us not to use certain drawers. We had no access to the garage, which would have been 'nice' for a winter rental given snow & unpacking one's vehicles. Especially given the no shoe rule.

This property is advertised as a 'premier' lodge and the price is reflective. However, mattresses, linens, bedding, glassware, flatware etc., were reflective of much inferior lodging.

The owner isn't forthcoming about the property either; he doesn't clearly state you have no access to the garage. Further, he didn't advise, until arrival, that he'd be staying on-site in adjoining area.

In summary, we won't be staying at this property in the future & won't refer to friends / family. I don't believe this owner should have this property in the vacation rental pool nor the owner because of unrealistic expectations, strange habits & tired facilities.

Owner's Response: Steve, while the damages caused weren’t created with malicious intent, the way you're resolving it feels like it is. Virtually everyone’s provided 5 star reviews and now our home deteriorates to a "tired" facility of 1 star from the previous guest's stay to yours? Some statements in your review are False & Slanderous: 1. We did not refinish the entire 2,850 sq.ft. of flooring, nor even the entire wood floor areas of the home. 2. We did not withhold your entire deposit. 3.a. Our rental agreement, which you accepted, clearly states that "The Garage, Office (4th. bedroom) and Art Studio (Separate Space, sometimes occupied occasionally) are not included as part of the rental property, or the aforementioned sq. ft. calculations of the home." b. You were informed there was no access to the garage. c. You were informed the Art Studio was/could be occupied. d. I stayed the first night and awoke early to clear the driveway and brush the snow off your vehicles, so you could drive away at your leisure, without having to do anything whatsoever. Since it wasn't supposed to snow any subsequent nights, I left for the remainder of your stay. Is this what you refer to when you say I have "strange habits?" Yes, I guess it's strange to receive service like that these days...isn't it? Check the other reviews, you'll see you're not the only one for which we performed that service. 4. "The owner supplied the box of Legos." Also state that it was the adults, in your group, that picked that box up, carried it downstairs and placed it on the great room floor where your 20 month old was at liberty to push it around the floors, which created the damages in the first place. 5. About the sticky notes - mention that is was only in the one master bathroom and that you had two other drawers available for your use, as well as the two areas below the sinks. 6. We asked you to "find another place to stay for any of your future visits to Tahoe because of the damages your party created.” That is why you’ll never stay here again. Your inattentiveness to abiding by simple rules and common sense tainted your good time. Is abiding by the rules and having common sense an "unrealistic expectation?" After being informed of the damages, your email response carried veiled threats, (about getting more of your deposit back than the repairs cost or you'd write a bad review). Lying about our agreement, and speaking poorly of our home, in your review, speaks volumes about your intent.

A great week in Tahoe

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay on the North shore of Lake Tahoe. The home was clean and well appointed for our week there. The owner, David gave us a detailed tour of the home so there were no surprises. The kitchen was amazing with all of the appliances working and required pots and pans to satisfy any chef. The only reason we did not rank it a 5 star score was because the there was no cable or satellite TV so we missed enjoying our morning news. We also wish there were some beach towels and chairs to use as well. David was a life saver in helping us jump start our battery on the rental car too. Definitely a great guy to rent from.

Owner's Response: Hi Pete, I'm glad I was there to help you with your car and charge your battery overnight, so you didn't have to spend 1/2 a day driving back and forth to exchange your car for another one. It is dismaying to be docked a star for not having cable, when it is specifically stated, up front, in the rental agreement for your review before making and paying for a reservation. We purposefully have no cable for the TV (only DVD's) so our guests can focus their time on being with family and friends. We're glad you enjoyed your stay here and that you took such good care of our home.

Wonderful home, great for kids!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in David's wonderful property for two nights with four adults, two toddlers and a baby. We loved it. In particular, it was great to be able to use some of the extended collection of toys that David has (books, games, puzzles, little kitchen, even a small slide). The staircases are a little dangerous for the kids, but ok under adult supervision - and David made sure to warn us about them. There is also a hill for sledding in walking distance of the house. Would definitely recommend this for families with small kids!

Great getaway home!

  • 5 of 5

Well our experience in Lake Tahoe was fabulous. David's home was everything as advertised and more. We really felt like we were in a vacation home, inside and outdoors. Perfect layout for spending time with your family. In a great location in Tahoe Vista, close to numerous restaurants, a supermarket, quiet neighborhood and just a few blocks from the beach and great hikes. Location was better than I imagined. The attention to detailing of the entire property was evident the moment we arrived. The property is clearly well maintained and ready for us to enjoy immediately. We were greeted by the homeowner and he gave us a great tour of the house and amenities. Simply a beautiful mountain home I'm sure you would enjoy as much as we did!
