Stonewall Crossing: Historic Property on the Shenandoah River

Bedrooms 4
Space 4,000 sq ft
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Estate, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Enjoy natural beauty at this historic retreat on the banks of the Shenandoah River. Built in 1739, Stonewall Crossing sits on 25 beautiful acres with nearly a quarter mile of riverfront views, a meadow, a quarry, and views of the Massanutten mountain ridge.

Stonewall Crossing is a unique, welcoming respite in the countryside that sits on the banks of this historic river. The original two-story log cabin has been beautifully renovated. The lower level serves as the Great Room, complete with a bluestone fireplace built from rock quarried on the property. In all, the house features four large bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. The décor of each bedroom draws inspiration from the original structures of the pioneering families and Shenandoah Valley farmers who have lived here over the past three centuries.

Stonewall Crossing also features luxurious, modern amenities. A fully appointed, chef’s-quality kitchen with granite countertops opens to the dining room--perfect for cooking, entertaining, and gathering to enjoy special meals. Off the dining room and surrounding the house is a two-story deck overlooking the river and perfect for socializing, watching the sunset, stargazing, or relaxing with a good book.

Stonewall Crossing is located in the Shenandoah Valley nestled between the Shenandoah National Forest and the George Washington National Forest. Stonewall Crossing’s deck provides a stunning view of Strickler Knob, considered one of the top hikes in the Mid-Atlantic region.

About Sara Capella

Stonewall Crossing is the vacation home for three-generations of a family that has endeavored to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of this homestead. We live and work in the area, and we frequently ‘runaway’ to Stonewall Crossing. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we have.

Sara Capella purchased this estate in 2004

Why Sara Capella chose Luray

Only 90 miles (a 2-hour drive) from the Washington DC area gives you enough proximity for a weekend escape, but sufficient distance to provide a respite from city life.

What makes this estate unique

We enjoy swimming and kayaking in the river, the proximity to excellent hiking trails, the beautiful mountain views and the peacefulness of country life. We also love to cook and entertain and the property is perfect for that.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a perfect location for our girls get-away and birthday celebration. We absolutely appreciate all the attention to details and upgraded features. The kitchen is fully stocked and we staged two amazing meals.

Wonderful property and location on the Shenandoah River. Close to Luray Caverns and town of Luray.

  • 5 of 5

About 30 minute drive to nice hiking in Shenandoah National Park. Local rescue zoo was fun for the kids. Caverns a must.

Attended an 80's band performance outside, downtown on a Friday evening. A real piece of small town Americana.

Wonderful and amazing

  • 5 of 5

Stonewall Crossing was absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed our stay very much and highly recommend it for everyone. It was comfortable for everyone and the firepit was perfect. The aesthetics of everything were ideal. My sole complaint and warning ti anyone thinking about staying at Stonewall Crossing is that there are lots of bugs both inside and outside the house, but this can be blamed on the location and the weather rather than the house. Thank you for an amazing stay!

Tremendous house that savors its 1800's heritage awhile blending 21st century conveniences into it.

  • 5 of 5

We looked for a great "taste of Virginia" VRBO for our Midwest relatives to enjoy when they traveled to Luray for our son's wedding. This was perfect. It was six miles and 150 years away from the venue. Everybody absolutely enjoyed their stay and Stonewall Crossing's setting.

Incredibly property

  • 5 of 5

The house and grounds were just as pictured if not more spacious. My family of 12 stayed for two nights and it was a great experience. The house was clean and meticulously cared for. Would absolutely recommend staying at Stonewall Crossing

Friends and I had a fantastic time at stonewall crossing. The outside fireplace, the access to the river, the incredible porch. Everything was remarkably fun, easy, and beautiful. Thanks so much!

Exceptional home for large family gathering

  • 5 of 5

We spend four days (April 27- 30) at this home - there were 9 of us, 7 adults and 2 small children. While there are many great attributes here, there are two that stand out in my mind. First, if your family likes to be outdoors - this is the place. There are acres to roam and the fields outside of the house are very nicely maintained -- we set up croquet (we brought), played night Frisbee, chipped a few wiffle golf balls all in the yard. We went kayaking in the river and fished and spent hours outside in the evening. The second terrific asset in this house is it's size and construction -- in the evening after we came in from outside, we would play cards for hours, into the wee hours of the am, laughing and loud, and the little ones (2 and 4) never heard a peep. Loved that. I have no complaints about this home - its a great value for the rental price.
