About this property

Historic Property on the Shenandoah River

Enjoy natural beauty at this historic retreat on the banks of the Shenandoah River. Built in 1739, Stonewall Crossing sits on 25 beautiful acres with nearly a quarter mile of riverfront views, a meadow, a quarry, and views of the Massanutten mountain ridge.

Stonewall Crossing is a unique, welcoming respite in the countryside that sits on the banks of this historic river. The original two-story log cabin has been beautifully renovated. The lower level serves as the Great Room, complete with a bluestone fireplace built from rock quarried on the property. In all, the house features four large bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. The décor of each bedroom draws inspiration from the original structures of the pioneering families and Shenandoah Valley farmers who have lived here over the past three centuries.

Stonewall Crossing also features luxurious, modern amenities. A fully appointed, chef’s-quality kitchen with granite countertops opens to the dining room--perfect for cooking, entertaining, and gathering to enjoy special meals. Off the dining room and surrounding the house is a two-story deck overlooking the river and perfect for socializing, watching the sunset, stargazing, or relaxing with a good book.

An outdoor fireplace and patio provides an ideal spot to stargaze, roast marshmallows or listen to the songbirds while enjoying your morning coffee

Stonewall Crossing is located in the Shenandoah Valley nestled between the Shenandoah National Forest and the George Washington National Forest. Stonewall Crossing’s deck provides a stunning view of Strickler Knob, considered one of the top hikes in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Stepping Back in Time
What a beautifully appointed historic home! We enjoyed our stay at Stonewall Crossing immensely! Very clean and great attention to detail! Plenty of room for the family to gather, but also space to have quiet time. We felt transported back in time!

Nice, but could have been better
What was good All the appliances worked, power was on, and no bed bugs. The kitchen was well stocked with spices, utensils, small appliances, etc. The home is decorated well and you can tell they invested in their bathrooms. The fireplace for smore's in the yard was nice and the grass was low so we were able to play in the yard. No mosquitos outside, which was a surprise. There are tons of light switches everywhere, you can spend lots of time trying to find the one you need! There was complimentary tea, but the good flavors were all gone. I left an item and Sara was nice enough to mail it back to me at no extra charge, which was beyond kind. What was okay The house is dark at night if you turn all the lights off. We brought extra night lights and left a couple on in case we needed to go downstairs. The hot water worked fine, but wreaked of Sulphur and was cloudy. There were not many games at all. Pictionary was warped probably from getting wet. There were cards, and Uno, but not much else to do. There is a closet of baby toys, but nothing for older kids, so come prepared. As my husband put it, "If your entertainment system requires 8 pages of laminated instructions, it's the wrong one!" We got it working, but the wi-fi was spotty. There was almost no view of the river as the brush has been allowed to grow up, so there was only one spot in the whole house that had any view, which was disappointing. There are a lot of antique chairs in the home. Some are rickety, but they do hold you. The ceilings upstairs have low door entry's and low beams. My husband is 6' 5" and hit his head on the rafters several times. We finally just decided to stay out of some of the rooms. There are also raised boards at the entry to rooms, making it easy to trip. So watch your head and your step. What was bad BUGS. Indoors, spiders under chairs (with spider eggs as a bonus), ants, and one's you will have to google to figure out. There are not just flying bugs from leaving a door open. The bathroom in the "kids room" is scary. The door locks from the outside and the window is broken, so if your little one pushes it up it will slam back down almost instantly. Really dangerous for little fingers. Also there is no hand shower and the tub is a soaking tub. You'll need to bring a hand held shower attachment or bring a glass up from downstairs if you want to wash your child's hair. The other tub across the hall does not have a hand shower either. DIRTY. There were three hairs

Loved the property. Will definitely rent again. Close to my family. Loved the movie room and outside fireplace area. Great number of bathrooms but sulphur in the water really smells. Maybe a water purifier? Ample kitchen. Beautiful fireplaces. Cozy!

Stonewall Crossing - our 4th visit
What a great long weekend at Stonewall Crossing! My family absolutely loves this house. This was our 4th visit (I've already booked next year). The spacious house is perfect for our expanding family, including 7 adults and 3 grandchildren. We love the house, the grounds and the location. We got to enjoy 3 days of hiking and kayaking on the river, and then relaxed with a fire and s'mores. The owner/host is amazing! Very quick to respond with questions and even let us stay past check out this year. We had car trouble on the last day and needed to wait until the repairs were done. Can't wait until next year.

Stonewall Crossing is the vacation home for three-generations of a family that has endeavored to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of this homestead. We live and work in the area, and we frequently ‘runaway’ to Stonewall Crossing. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we have and make fond memories with your friends and family.

Why they chose this property

Only 90 miles (a 2-hour drive) from the Washington DC area gives you enough proximity for a weekend escape, but sufficient distance to provide a respite from city life.

Luray has may activities for young and old alike. The Hawksbill Greenway is a great walking path. All our kids learned to ride bikes on it. Downtown you can find a used bookstore, historic movie theater, ice cream shop and brewery plus many art and gift shops.

What makes this property unique

We enjoy swimming and kayaking in the river, the proximity to excellent hiking trails, the beautiful mountain views and the peacefulness of country life. We also love to cook and entertain and the property is perfect for that.

It's an ideal house and grounds to reconnect with family and friends. With 25-acres, there is plenty of room to roam and play games with the kids or find a quiet spot to watch the day drift by.

Or, if you prefer an active vacation, jump in the river and kayak to see wildlife and wildflowers. Hiking is close by at the Shenandoah National Park or the George Washington National Forest. Go underground at the Luray Caverns to explore this unique cave system. For history lovers, stop by a Civil War Battlefield in New Market or Winchester.

All of this is to say that regardless of your vacation goals, you can meet them at Stonewall Crossing!
