HIDDEN JEWEL

  • 5 of 5

For decades my family has driven, walked and cycled past this magnificent property in complete awe and admiration within only minutes from their homes. Well, this past weekend became a reality to everyone when we rented this beautiful estate. We've rented several properties thru Homeaway and this was the 1st time the owner was there to actually show us the property in detail without having to spend our precious hours trying to become acclamated to the property on or own. To see this amazing home was wonderful, but to hear the history and origin of its charm from the owner was paramount. Robert, was so gracious and accommodating and he welcomed complete strangers like we were family. The home and its sorroundings were immaculate and welcoming. The accommodations were way more than we expected as all rooms are "huge" and well equipped with all of the extras you would expect at home with more than enough linens, kitchen utensils and even shower gel!...just 1 issue, my 10yr old nephew asked "WHERE IS THE NINTENDO OR XBOX"...however, they never missed it nor were they bored. They called it their castle and were taking photos on their phones and sending them to friends and busy playing hide n seek, of course we had to teach them and they practiced and performed a piano recital ! I can't say enough about this property and our family came from all over ..we from Florida,Virginia,New York and Delaware and are all planning to return this summer and fall. New Yorkers don't know what they're missing just 2 hours away!

Excellent Property - Fantastic Owner - Wonderful Memories

  • 5 of 5

Robert (the owner) was a pleasure to work with, he quickly answered all my questions and even sent me more pictures of the house and property at my request. He welcomed us at check in and gave us a tour of the house along with a brief history of it’s interesting past. You will want the tour in order to properly know where everything is and how the house works ect... Keep in mind my stay was for a New Years retreat with close friends so in the freezing cold we did not get to fully enjoy the amazing grounds but I could image just how great that would be in the summer. The actual house has everything you could need for a stay with plenty of room if you want to tuck away to read or get any work done. This house really has character and feels Gatsby Esque with the large stair case and formal dining area. All of the bedrooms were reported to have comfortable beds and ample room. The house is very warm and inviting making you feel comfortable and at home quickly. I would recommend this property to anyone and I would love to go back in the summer to take advantage of the lake.

Perfect for us

  • 5 of 5

The property was perfect for us and our event. We had a Gothic inspired Halloween/Anniversary party and this location was exactly what I was looking for. We had a bunch of family coming in from out of town. This location allowed us all to stay in the same location and still have plenty of room for everyone. Plus we even had some extra space if any of our party guests over indulged. Our guests were amazed by the property, the beautiful garden, the lake, the 'moat', the house that seemed to go on and on. And with the appropriate set dressing, it made the perfect location for our 'haunted mansion'. Yes, the house could use some updates, especially in the baths and kitchen, but honestly those were truly minor concerns for us. Overall, I don't think I could have found a better venue for our event. Robert, the owner, was great to work with and I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a really special venue for their event.

Good stay for a celebration weekend

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a quick weekend away with 13 people for a celebration. The house is fascinating and for the right group, perfect. We had a great time, as the group was laid back. Had I come with a different group, it might have been a bit more challenging - so just want to make clear a few things:

- The house is enormous and easily fit all 13 people without need for any couch sleeping. We did end up with a few people sleeping on the beds in the basement & attic. Finding a place that comfortably fits this many is not easy. The attic is not really finished and really better for a kids space.

- The owner, Robert, is a lovely person. He was there to greet us, gave us a fantastic tour & history lesson, etc.

- The house is located on a beautiful lake right in Bridgeton, NJ. The lake is not private to this house but shared with many others (just to be clear). The house is situated next to a relatively busy road, if this is important to you.

- The house is fully stocked with everything you could require in terms of linens/towels/dishes, etc. There must be service for like 20 ppl!

- The overall feeling of the house is of 'faded grandeur' - the house is chock full - many decorations, etc. and the furniture is not as immaculate/new as the pictures look. The house has a 'lived in' feel, like you are staying with a friend rather than renting a hotel. The closets have clothes in them, there was a robe hanging behind the door in our bathroom, etc.

- The pool is really more like a pond that you can go in. It was not enticing for many of our guests because they did not like the feel of plant life on the floor surface, etc. For those of us that did go in, it was nice! And it makes a lovely sound outside with the water running through it, so nice to sit beside it.

Knowing that, I think that the house was good for us - the table was big, we had a beautiful brunch in the gazebo, etc. You can determine what is important for your group with these caveats in mind.

Owner's Response: Just a note. All of the bathrooms have very nice bathrobes that are clean and meant to be used by guests. They are cleaned appropriately after each stay is complete. This is my home and there are clothes in most closets but there is room in each for any guests to use the space. The third floor is not included in the description of the property and is not included in the number of guests that can be accommodated. It is a large room that extends the length of the house. It can be used for overflow if necessary. Most of the furniture is antique or and the decor is meant to give the feeling of being in a home. After all it is! All of the pictures are recent. The pool is as advertised a cement pond that has water running through it from the lake. I understand that for some it may be less desirable as it is not chlorinated. However the lake has a sandy bottom and one can walk into the lake from the sandy beach. The pool is fed by a moat system that runs through the Pedro Perry from the fresh water lake. If anyone has any questions about the property, please feel free to contact me. Robert

Beautiful outdoor wedding

  • 5 of 5

I came across this home online when I was searching for homes with large yards and beautiful landscaping to have an outdoor wedding. This Home has Old charm surrounded in beautiful Nature . A gazebo that overlooks the lake. A man made beach. A lake fed pool, a garden, everything you could want in an outdoor wedding. We rented a tent and held about 75 guests on the property comfortably.I specifically rented for the outdoor space but the indoors were great as well. A beautiful sunroom. The bedrooms were all very comfortable and had all great views. The only room that wasn't a favorite was the basement, but the kids loved it! I didn't venture into the neighborhood I was just there for the wknd. I definitely feel like this is a great home to rent to have a reunion/ wedding/retreat, since it's so large and has such a great outdoor space!
