Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom, 1.5 Bath; private pond for fishing

Please note: We just got a cancellation for August 3rd and 4th.

Other than that we only have a few open dates in April and May, until the 10th of October. We will consider one night bookings if that is all that is available. We lowered the price and allow an early check in of 1pm and a late check out of noon if you only stay one night. Please check our calendar before making an inquiry. We book up to a year in advance, but will make exceptions for guests booking a stay of more than two weeks.

Our large 6 acre retreat is very private, yet has convenient access to I-5 and the nearby tulip fields in Mount Vernon, Washington. Three acres are dedicated to the cabin, pond and surrounding grounds. You will feel very secluded as you can’t see other homes, including ours, on the upper 3 acres of the property. A perfect getaway for small families or a romantic weekend. Most of our guests come back annually and have made staying at our cabin a family tradition for birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions. Out of respect for our neighbors, we do not offer the cabin as a venue for parties or weddings. Although some of our guests take advantage of our convenient location to all that Skagit Valley has to offer, many come to the cabin and don't leave until their checkout time!

The grounds are well landscaped and include a turquoise half-acre pond. You can enjoy a refreshing swim on a warm summer day. There's excellent catch & release barbless lure & fly fishing for trout. Because it's on private property, no fishing license is required. We have horseshoes for a evening of fun, or sit by the fire pit. Then relax in the hot tub to finish the night off.

The home is fully furnished for all of your in home needs and is comfortable for up to four guests. The cabin has a Queen bed and double futon in the upstairs spacious master bedroom as well as a queen sized sofa bed in the living room.

The only thing you will need to bring is your clothes, a fishing pole, and a steak for the BBQ. We have satellite TV, DVD and wireless internet. (Note: there is no landline phone available.) The kitchen is fully stocked with all appliances, including a griddle, coffee maker, coffee beans and grinder, microwave, electric hot pot, slow cooker, and many spices. As far as personal items, we provide a hair dryer, shampoo, body wash and cream rinse, so you don't even need to pack those. A full sized washer and dryer are available at the cabin for your convenience as well. Firewood for the fire pit is also provided.

Please check our calendar for availability so you won't be disappointed! Our weekends book way in advance, so if you want to book for a week long stay, you need to get in your request early. Winter weekdays are often open and can be booked last minute. To get an accurate quote, click 'instant quote' to enter the dates, number of guests, and whether or not you have a pet. You can email us if you have questions or use the "instant booking" option if you're ready to secure your dates. We book up to a year in advance, but will make exceptions for guests booking a stay of more than two weeks.

If you have the time, check out the video some guests made after having their New Year's Eve stay at our cabin. It will really give you a feel for what our vacation rental is all about.

About John or Mary Davis

John and Mary have retired from 30+ years of teaching in Cordova, Alaska. We ran one of the first B&B's there, the Oystercatcher Bed and Breakfast. John grew up in Skagit Valley and was excited when his niece decided to sell this property. We have many relatives within a one mile radius, so we are surrounded by good people in this very special neighborhood.

Why John or Mary Davis chose Big Lake

Buying this vacation rental was the perfect transition for us in our 'retirement.' We love the beauty and accessibility this property offers us and our guests.

What makes this cabin unique

This property is very unique. Not only is our cabin much more secluded than most vacation rentals, you have your own private pond all to yourselves during your stay. We stock the pond with trout for your fishing enjoyment. Since it's a private pond, no fishing license is necessary.

Summer or winter this area has so much to offer. The summer is filled with fun things to do including the San Juan Islands, tulip fields 20 minutes away, or Big Lake which is less than 5 minutes away. The North Cascade pass has many trails to hike and much much more. In the winter, visitors come from all over to see the eagles. There is steelhead fishing on the Skagit river or enjoy trout fishing in our private pond off the deck. Mt Baker ski area is just an hour and 15 minutes door to door or Stevens pass ski area is about an hour and 45 minutes. If you're here to shop, the Outlet malls in Burlington are about 15 minutes away.

A beautiful vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a treat! It is a beautifully maintained house with a lovely little lake. My husband and I kept commenting on how thoughtful the owners were. There was everything you could possibly need in the house. Spices, pots, flashlights, candles that were on led timers so that my kids could sleep at night, a baby gate, just the right amount of fish food :) I was initially worried as my 2 year old could open the doors including the one to the lake but then saw the iron screen door that blocked it and that was a relief! The stairs were thickly carpeted so if my kids slipped it wouldn't hurt, my kids loved playing with the games that were available and we got to watch some dvds that were provided when it rained. It was a wonderful place. Beautiful, cozy, peaceful and serene. We loved sitting in the hot tub over looking the pond and my kids loved feeding the fish and the ducks. We will definitely come again in the future! Thank you so much for lending us your space. - Sarah, Josh, Emma and Theo! (March 26-28)

Entire family (dogs included) loved it.

  • 5 of 5

Everything was as perfect as the pictures showed. The cabin is spacious and was spotless when we arrived. It is very secluded and quiet. Our dogs (two labs) loved the access to the lake directly from the deck area. We even had duck visitors right up to the deck both evenings, very friendly and obviously well fed. The main bed was extremely comfortable, while our son slept well on the pull-out couch downstairs. My wife and I (and the dogs) look forward to returning.

Awesome Getaway

  • 4 of 5

One of the best maintained places we've stayed at, it is everything the pictures and descriptions say it is. Would highly recommend this place for a relaxing place to go hang out. Reason for the 4 star was the hotub was a little cloudy and the wife and I are leary of dirty hotubs as we've had some bad experiences.

Owner's Response: My guess is the guests before you must've had lotion on before entering the tub. I changed the filter and did as much as I could to eliminate the cloudiness during the 4 hour turn over between guests. If I had known that it didn't clear up by that evening, I would've gladly come to work on it. I ask guests to call me if the water looks cloudy or too low. I take water samples to the hot tub store every week to make adjustments as needed. We also change the water every 3-4 months.

Many of our guests never leave the cabin and treat it as a true 'destination vacation.' However, there are a multitude of things to do in Skagit Valley. We are about a 10 minute drive to the Centennial Trail which offers miles of relatively flat bike trails. In about 40 minutes you can be at the ferry dock in Anacortes and on your way to one of the San Juan Islands for the day. If you're looking for shopping opportunities, the outlet malls in Burlington are less than 10 minutes away. We are also very close to Skagit Valley Community College and have had many parents stay at the cabin to be near their children who attend the college. The tulip fields in April are just a short ride to the other side of the freeway and right beyond them is the quaint town of LaConner with lots of shops and restaurants. Or...you can just stay put and enjoy the serenity of the pond and quiet, private setting here on our property!
