Right in the center of town in Loiza, during the last week of July, the locals celebrate the St. Jaime's Carnival, wearing colorful masks and costumes, while singing and dancing their traditional and contagious music. These Afro-Caribbean cultural trends have been beautifully and tastefully captured by the local artists, Samuel Lind and the Ayala family. Their respective homes and 'taller' workshops are only steps from the Malibu gate. Loiza is also home to Iglesia San Patricio, which dates to 1670 and is the oldest church in continuous use in Puerto Rico. Tasty fresh crab (JUEYES) dishes can also be found through out the town of Loiza, the family owned/operated 'El Sazon de Silvia' restaurant is among the best in the island.

We had a wonderful time in Puerto Rico. We did a lot of traveling: we went south to Ponce and visited the Museo Castillo Serralles. We saw the radio telescope in the west. We visited the rain forest and saw the great exhibits there. We visited the Bacardi factory (to my 18-year daughter's delight). We spent lots of time in San Juan visiting different restaurants. We went to different beaches and saw the huge waves. Thanks for your warning. A number of the beaches were actually closed but we always found some that were open. We enjoyed the iguanas greeting us every day: they were sun-bathing on the wall outside the compound and were quite happy to pose for pictures. Thanks again, Ania, George and Sophie
A visit to the rustic kiosks on route # 3, on the way to the Rain Forest in the neighbor town of Luquillo, is a must. There you can sample the real Puerto Rican dishes and appetizers such as Cod fritters (bacalaitos), sweet plantain wrapped around seasoned meat (piononos) or a fritter filled with crab or ground beef (alcapurrias) or mashed plantains stuffed (mofongo) with skirt steak (churrasco), shrimp (camarones), chicken (pollo) or sea food (mariscos) while drinking cold coconut water straight from the coconut. To spice things up add a little bit of Dewers to your coconut water.
El Metropol - we recommend this restaurant as soon as you get to San Juan or on your way out as it is located only few minutes from the airport. This place is an institution, where you can find typical Puertorrican as well as Cuban dishes. They are famous for their mojito's , pineapple with rum (pina colada- which by the way -La Barrachina in the Old San Juan claims to be the creators of this refreshing drink).
You can enjoy the local beer-MEDALLA- in any establishment.
A short drive from the airport on the way to Malibu right after the Marina bridge and before entering Rd 187 there is THE REEF.- offering amazing view, great local food, fresh seafood, famous for their MOFONGO, Please observe the NO PARKING signs in the area. Valet parking available.
About 6 miles into Road 187 (about half way to the condo) there is the most famous kiosk in this area.-EL BORICUA. There is usually a line to place the order as all items are fried as orders come in. Everything is fresh and cooked on wood burning stoves. Their specialty is CRAB (JUEYES) dishes cooked in a variety of ways. Located across from a surf point, the then family home would provide parking, food and refreshments to the surfers. Although the location has not changed, the building has been expanded to accommodate the hundreds of daily visitors (specially on weekends) who come to enjoy fresh JUEYES alcapurrias, empanadas or simply accompanied with rice.
Cold Fresh coconut water and Medalla beer are always available.
Credit cards are accepted and there is plenty of parking in the back of the building.
