Quiet, private, beautiful natural hideaway

  • 4 of 5

This is a perfect get away on a low key island in a beautiful natural setting. Nothing fancy but what a relief! Like living on a sailboat. You provide your own entertainment, meals and activities. Can be very romantic! Perfect for a couple, or two couples, if close friends. Basic amenities but the washer dryer were an added bonus. Can be totally alone if desired, but we were fortunate to have friends on the island with whom to share occasional meals and evenings. We were lucky to meet Matthew who also made the visit memorable with his obvious love and devotion to the island and his beautiful property. The last supper of fresh grouper was superb and will stay with us until the next visit to this special place. Thank you

Paradise (with a small learning curve)

  • 4 of 5

Man-O-War Cay and this property are a little piece of paradise - just with a small learning curve for the uninitiated to the area. First, the view from the cottage is stellar! I didn't even mind doing dishes with that ocean view in the distance outside the window. One thing we were a little disappointed with was the beach access. To be fair, Matthew did warn us that the access was very rocky - we just didn't realize that it would be almost impossible for my mother-in-law who is in her 70s to navigate safely. She gets around very well but has had knee replacement and just can't risk that kind of fall. That being said, we found a wonderful little beach at the Low Place which is about 10 minutes by golf cart that was perfect. The golf cart was part of our learning curve. Being such a small island we didn't think we'd need one and didn't rent ahead on Easter Weekend. Big mistake. We needed groceries for 4 for the long weekend. Fortunately, people here are super friendly and helpful and a woman from the market picked us up, let us shop and dropped us back at the cottage. After two days of no carts available, we contacted Matthew, the owner, who graciously loaned us his spare for the remainder of our stay which made life much easier! All in all, the island is gorgeous and the wildlife is wonderful - such beautiful birds and butterflies and lots of busy little lizards to watch. There are chickens on the property who seemed to think they are dogs as they showed up every morning during breakfast to be fed! We loved them and even gave them names. The beds were comfortable and clean as well as the bathrooms being clean and supplied with clean linens. Expect little ants in the kitchen because I think in the tropics with a screened cottage it is unavoidable. Things like lamp shades and decorations could have definitely been cleaner but if it's not something I sleep on, shower in or cook on then I can learn to look past that. Overall it is a wonderful little cottage with two great porches (one screened/one not) a spectacular view and unrivaled privacy all on an island with friendly, helpful people where you don't even have to lock the door. In fact, you really can't! lol We had a very relaxing vacation here and would definitely come back. It did my heart good to realize there are places this safe and wonderful left in the world!

Quaint, comfortable, idyllic Man-O-War cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Man-O-War Cay is a lovely, quiet island. This cottage has the feel of a wooden boat that has been carefully looked after. The porch is spacious and provides an atmosphere to enjoy resting, dining, entertaining or solitude. The view includes a lovely landscaped yard and the ocean beyond. Sounds of the surf, breezes through the trees, & 3 visiting chickens bring smiles.

The location is a convenient walk to the beach, the settlement, and the boat dock in Eastern Harbor. Matthew provided helpful local knowledge and was available to answer any questions we had. He went out of his way to make sure our needs were met and our stay enjoyable. His caretakers were also available and helped with arrival to & departure from the cottage.

This was a wonderful place to experience the comfort & beauty of Man-O-War Cay!

Cozy peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

From the dock space on Eastern Harbour to the private walk thru the palms to the Atlantic beach we loved our stay. The house as billed is like a little wooden ship. Perfect for my wife and I and probably good for up to two couples at night we didn’t hear a mechanical sound, only distant surf and clattering palms and the clucking of the three chickens in the morning

Like something out of a storybook...

  • 5 of 5

This house made our week amazing. Matthew and his caretakers have done a wonderful job creating an old Bahamian style house that looks like something right out of a storybook. Set in the middle of a lush jungle and just a very short walk to the beach made it perfect. And we had the whole beach to ourselves. The snorkeling at the beach was good too, and Matthew let us borrow fins for my parents.

The dock was very convenient for our boat rental, and there was even a line for keeping our boat off the dock. Caretakers picked us up in the pouring rain, and dropped us off as well. Couldn't have done without the screened in porch, and plenty of seating.

With all of this, the best thing about renting this house was the way that the owner, Matthew, took care of us every step of the way. He is truly caring, and will do everything in his power to make sure you are comfortable.

Owner's Response: We make the best effort possible at providing for our guests. Man-O-War is synonymous with quality and we want our guests to feel welcomed, arrive to a clean and well kept cottage, and know that there is always someone to call on for assistance. Mr. Van Valkenburg goes over the top with his compliments, and chose not to dwell on those things out of our control, like the weather and the electricity, both erratic. For that we are grateful to him and all like minded adventurous guests!

A magic place, tranquil, clean and well organized. The location, surrounding landscape are spectacul

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our stay. We arrived via the ferry directly to the dock in eastern harbor. We were greeted and helped with our bags. The cottage was well provisioned per our request and the surroundings landscape was beautiful foliage. Easy walking trails or golf cart path to wander on to settlement, a short hike or straight out for an ocean swim. It is our go-to place to relax and recharge .
