About this property

On the mountain, 4 miles from Sewanee!

Only minutes from The University of the South, St. Andrew's-Sewanee School, St. Mary's Retreat Center and Monteagle, Aerie is the perfect retreat on the Cumberland Plateau.

The Property
More than just a cabin in the woods, Aerie is a recently-refurbished 2,500-square-foot wood house that blends in with the trees on a 13-acre site on the Cumberland Plateau. Set on the edge of a bluff with a spectacular view of mountains and trees and with two decks for viewing them, Aerie offers respite from everyday life.

No matter what the season, weather or time of day, the view is always spectacular.

The House
When you wind down the long driveway through the woods, you know you’ve come to a special place. Relax in the sunroom and watch the chickadees, titmice and nut-hatches on the feeder about a foot outside the window. Explore the shelves of books in the library/office. Play games or do puzzles on the balcony overlooking the living room. Watch movies from the selection in the great room upstairs. Or do them all!

The poplar-paneled master bedroom has a California king bed (slighter narrower and longer than a regular king) and a master bathroom with a step-in shower. The library/office has a day bed and a trundle bed. There is a half bath downstairs. The dining table seats eight, and there is a card table and four TV tables; there is a table on the balcony upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped. The living room, laundry room and sunroom are also downstairs.

Upstairs is the blue bedroom (queen bed), the yellow bedroom (queen bed), the balcony, a great room and a bathroom. Upstairs or down, all of the rooms have views—of the far-off mountains or the nearby trees—and there are hand-made crafts and original paintings throughout the house.

The Surrounding Community
There is much to do on the mountain. During the school year, The University of the South offers theater and music performances, as well as art exhibits. Craft fairs are held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, in May, and on the Fourth of July. The Sewanee Summer Music Center is held four weeks in the summer and hosts numerous performances. Shakerag Craft Workshops are held in June at St. Andrews-Sewanee School.

For hikers, there is the 18-mile Perimeter Trail on the University of the South domain, as well as the seven parks that are part of South Cumberland State Park (which includes Fiery Gizzard, Savage Gulf, the Stone Doors, and the Sewanee Natural Bridge, a mile from Aerie) with its many hiking opportunities, and other natural areas. Woods Reservoir and Tim’s Ford are nearby for boaters. Golfers will enjoy the Sewanee Golf course. There are a number of dining choices in Sewanee, Cowan, Winchester and Monteagle. For the attractions of the big city, Chattanooga is 45 minutes away, Nashville is 1.5 hours, Birmingham is 2.5 hours, and Atlanta is 3 hours.

You must be at least 25 to rent Sewanee Aerie, and you must be on-site. Three-night minimum for University of the South Homecoming weekend, Family weekend and for national holidays. Four-night minimum for University of the South graduation.

There is a high bluff in front of the house, and there is no fence, so the house may not be appropriate for small children. In fact, everyone needs to be cautious near the cliff!

Lovely Home, Magnificent View
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The view off the mountain is spectacular, especially with the trees showing their fall colors. Very convenient if you are visiting the University.

Holiday trip
This house is charming, not like a cookie cutter cabin that’s just a rental. This is a loved family home and you could feel that while you stayed there. The upstairs is especially great for older kids or teens giving them a place to hang out. We also enjoyed watching the birds. Although the house is in the mountains it’s off a paved road and easily accessible. There’s lots of hiking nearby if you want to take advantage of that. Cindy was a great host and very responsive. We enjoyed our visit.

Warm, lovely home
We absolutely loved this house. The view from the sunroom is outstanding. The property feels private but is easy to find. The home is warm, cozy yet spacious. It felt like a second home, like we were staying with close friends or family. The kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms had everything we needed. The kitchenware was lovely, much nicer than any other vacation stays we’ve visited (and we’ve traveled a lot!). My family, including my elderly mother and teen daughter, all loved the place as much as my spouse and I did. We hope to be able to stay here again.

I grew up in Sewanee, one of the few who can claim that! I went to Sewanee Military Academy and spent the last three years of college at the University of the South. The mountain is my spiritual home.

Why they chose this property

There is so much to do on the mountain--hiking, biking, eating, camping, arts and theater through the University and, my personal favorite, just sitting.
