About Rachel

This home has been in our family since 1996. Our experiences with this house have been that of uniqueness, excitement, bonding, and joy. Since our family has moved on, its tenants have been diverse and many. For several years we offered it to family, friends, and missionaries from our church who needed a place between their calls of service. In 2010 we decided to list it here on VRBO / HomeAway. We always found our house to be a wonderful place for families to gather, experience, and grow, and we hope our home will provide such an environment for those who choose to visit.

Rachel purchased this house in 1996

Why Rachel chose Oconomowoc

We work very hard to make sure our house & property is well maintained and up-to-date.... interior and exterior. Since we began our VRBO journey, we've been making improvements every year. We hope they are appreciated by our guests.

What makes this house unique

Character. Charm. Personality. Uniqueness. Private. Intimate. Quiet. Get-Away. Spacious. One of a kind.

So wonderful

  • 5 of 5

WOW!!! We fell head over heels in love with this place! We loved all of the intricate details you can only get from being in a Victorian style home. The place was absolutely beautiful and we had an absolute blast here over the weekend. Can't wait to figure out another reason for us to stay at the house.

And the owner was so wonderful and so nice to work with. This is a definite must if you're looking to stay in the area.

Beautiful view rental!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed 9 days in May. It was close to everything and a perfect place to spend time together. Booking was very pleasant. When we asked about a pack-n-play they got one for the house which was much appreciated! The property is quiet, private, and picturesque with great views. Coming down the long tree lined drive you feel as if you’re leaving the hustle and bustle behind and truly escaping to a quaint cottage on the lake. Stepping through the doors it’s like stepping back in time, the quirkiness of the old sloping hardwood floors, the antique furniture, and the eclectic decor creates a sense of charm. Our granddaughter thought she had stepped into a giant dollhouse, loved going up and down the stairs, exploring the playroom upstairs with it’s fun “secret room” and stuffed animals.

That said, Here are a few things we had to deal with for the week............

The living room couch cushions would not stay on. We spent much time re-adjusting cushions all week.

There was a great shortage of hangers - so we purchased 2 new packs for the house and left them.

When I tried to open the drawer in upstairs bathroom (not attic) the knob came off in my hand.

Several windows in the house had blinds that were broken, taped back together with a Popsicle stick .

The latch on one of the master bedroom windows was broken, which was bothersome on windy nights when the window shook in its frame.

Glassware and plastic cups had a musty smell and all need a good wash before use.

I was initially convinced that everyone kept forgetting to flush the toilet until I later realized all the water was deeply yellow/orange tinged. This seems to be a chronic issue as the bathtub had a large yellow stain where the shower sprays. We all smelled a little rusty all week and had to rinse with bottled water when brushing teeth to get the iron taste out.

Many of the towels had rust stains, but this didn’t seem too bothersome since it was obvious (to us) it was from the orange tinged water.

The drain in the upstairs shower (not attic) was clogged so every shower turned into a bath.

I would never normally list so many minor items in a review , but feel that renters should know to thoroughly report anything you find or you may be charged.

Truly my intention was not to make this property sound terrible, it was not at all terrible! We very much enjoyed our stay.

A Time Honored Gem

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I enjoyed an absolutely wonderful weekend! The attention to detail in the decor of this lovely Victorian is breathtaking. You feel like a true guest of the owner family. We had some rain during our stay but the welcoming wrap around porch allowed for quiet talks while enjoying views of the lake. Thank you for sharing your home.

Private and peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd stay at this home, and it is such a peaceful and beautiful setting. Sitting on the porch or down on the patio overlooking the lake is heaven. The house is well-appointed and very clean -- with high quality bed linens (a thing I have come to value greatly after staying at many, many rental homes) and a complete kitchen. Overall the setting is spectacular and the house a perfect escape.

A happy return

  • 5 of 5

Our three-generation family was delighted to return for our second summer visit to the lovely lake house, quickly settling back in and feeling at home. The house has a warm and inviting feel and is furnished for comfort and practicality: every need has been anticipated. The home felt spacious for the eight of us, who ranged in age from 3 to 71, with places for us all to gather as a group - we especially enjoyed the wrap-around porch - as well as quiet retreats. We enjoy cooking together so appreciated the very well-equipped kitchen and the outdoor grill. Upstairs there are three generous-sized bedrooms with king and queen beds and a third floor with beds for children as well as a game and lounge area. The three full bathrooms are a definite plus. As we knew from before, the Internet worked flawlessly, and the central air conditioning was very welcome during a heat wave. Of course, we soaked up the beautiful and tranquil setting, enjoying getting into the amazingly clear lake, playing with the kids on the float, taking out the paddle boat, or just sitting quietly and enjoying the play of light on the water. The house feels very private, well-screened from neighboring properties, and in general the lake is very quiet. In fact, mid-week, we often felt as though we had it all to ourselves. Once again it was a pleasure to work with Kay on the rental; the rental process is very clear and well organized, and if there's a question, her response is immediate. We look forward to being in touch about returning next summer.
