What sets this house apart is its private dock and large swimmable shoreline. At Whipkins Cove, you can swim in a shallow area (gets deep gradually) near fire circle or plunge into deep water at the dock. One of the few areas around lake where you feel safe swimming out from shore.

This is a great home for multi-generational groups or two families vacationing together. Be sure to check out the video tour (with guided audio).

Home has three distinct living 'zones.' Top floor has master bed (king) with private bath (soaking tub and separate shower) and loft (w/ built-in double bed).

Middle floor has open kitchen/dining/living area (w/fireplace), 1/2 bath off kitchen, and master bedroom (king) with private bath (shower only).

Lower floor has mudroom with extra-large capacity W/D, 1/2 bath, entertainment area with sofa/love seat/fireplace/50-inch TV, and a large bedroom with two sets of bunkbeds and private bath (tub/shower combo and double sinks).

Outside there are four levels of decks, two covered porches and a huge waterfront with boulders to relax on. Fire circle at lakeside. Swim right off the dock or shore (from your own private gravel beach with large sitting stones).

About The Owner

Our family has long dreamed of creating a vacation rental home specifically for the people who visit. We travel the globe for work and pleasure and take notes and ideas from each place we stay in.

We jumped at the opportunity to buy Whipkins Cove (named by the former owners, who used a combination of their last names) and transform it into an amazing place by moving walls, adding dormers and giving it upscale touches. More than $100k later (ouch!), the home is completely remodeled and designed for maximum guest enjoyment (ie: lots of room to spread out and a lot of luxury touches).

Taking ideas from our favorite hotel chains (including Marriott and Ritz Carlton), we furnished the beds, kitchen, bathrooms, etc., with amenities that would make the house comfortable and memorable. Now, as we enter our first rental season, we're blown away by the interest Whipkins Cove has already generated (including bookings made when it was still a construction mess).

If Whipkins Cove is a VRBO success, we have our sights on other potential VRBO properties, including another cabin, this one located near the North Carolina ski resorts.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2009

Why The Owner chose Butler

Watauga Lake is beginning to capture attention of nature-loving travelers from around the globe. To us, that meant it would be a great investment opportunity. So far, that's been true. We've gotten inquiries from several Midwestern states, Florida, New England and even Europe. The kicker? Very few of the people contacting us had ever been to Watauga Lake before 2010.

What makes this cabin unique

The waterfront is amazing. It ranges from peaceful to party (depending on the season and joviality of the boaters passing by). I love that we have both shallow-water and deep-water (40-feet-plus) areas right off shore. The shallow area is protected from cove boat traffic by a giant rock and tree, located about 50 feet off shore. The rock keeps boats from coming too close to shore (or they'll crash into it) and gives children a safe place to swim.

Guestbook comments from the owner

First of all, I would like to say thank you for accommodating all of our families this weekend. We had so much fun, from swimming around the cove, riding on the boats and just relaxing around the cabin. I would highly recommend rending a boat for a couple days and exploring the lake. I also recommend making a bonfire, because our families had a blast making s'mores and just talking around the fire. (Comment written in guest book).

Amazing home with everything you need for a relaxing trip!

  • 5 of 5

One of the best vacation homes we have ever had! This property is a treat! You can tell right away that it is well cared for. The owners have thought of every little detail. I liked how they left little notes of instruction/information everywhere. The basement area is perfect for kids of all ages. They have toys, games, and books that meet a variety of interests and ages. The loft has a gorgeous view complete with a comfy daybed for reading or napping. My guys loved the kayaks and the row boat! Beautiful views of the lake were seen from every deck level. Porch swings were also in abundance! So many nice touches- I could go on, but you should just see for yourself. :)

Very nice house on a beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our family get together with our granddaughters and children. if you you want to do more than just relax and swim there is lots to do in the area . On the coolest day we drove to Damascus and rode bikes down the Virginia creeper trail which was great - definitely worth doing. We rented a pontoon boat for a few days and toured the entire lake - it is beautiful. We also checked out the nearby winery - very friendly folks there. I highly recommend this as a rental if you would like to stay in this area. I'm sure this is one of the nicest properties available.

Unparalleled Lake Luxury!

  • 5 of 5

What royalty our family felt like for the weekend! We truly appreciate the thought that the owners put into every single detail on the property. It was a memorable and magnificent stay. Lore was prompt with her response when we first arrived and had difficulty connecting to the WiFi (which we were then able to connect to immediately). We were in need of NOTHING. On our way in, we passed the drive in movie theater in Elizabethton. I have never been, and my mom thought it would be fun to venture out one evening for a movie. Once we arrived at Whipkins Cove, we did not want to leave for anything (not even when we had to go back home after checkout)! We spent the weekend drooling over the beauty of God's creation and all the work that the owners put into making this a vacation dream home. We will certainly be returning. Everything about the house was gorgeous. I was particularly drawn to the upstairs bathroom with the walk in shower and amazing bathtub. There were even bath salts present for my relaxation. They truly thought of everything! I would recommend this cabin to anyone. We laughed as people floated by the house on boats/ kayaks and just pointed and stared in amazement at the home. It is massive and breathtaking from the water! It was a real pleasure working with Lore. She is flexible and understanding. I am a huge cook and would have considered myself in heaven if I never left the kitchen all weekend! From the outdoor furniture to the matches and pens in the drawer and EVERYTHING in between, we thank you for such an incredible experience on Watauga Lake. There are even nicely printed labels located in various places around the home with helpful hints such as one in the shower that says to turn the knob a certain way if the shower head won't stop dripping. Helpful hints were handy and plentiful! This is one weekend that I will never forget. It is tranquil, serene, and a getaway to be adored by all. I hope to be speaking with Lore again soon as we plan for a longer family vacation next year. Everything was top notch and wonderful, from the time I found this home on VRBO to writing this very review! Thank you so much, Whipkins Cove!

Excellent Lake House!!

  • 5 of 5

You will not be disappointed with this rental. The location and view are awesome. It has a very rustic, lake house feel, but everything is very modern. Wonderful kitchen with lots of great cookware. The beds are super comfy and the game room downstairs is great for kids. The entire house was exceptionally clean. There are decks everywhere with deck furniture to enjoy and a gas grill. We had so much fun with the boat and kayaks, fishing, and roasting hot dogs and making s'mores at the fire pit! The owners are great to work with.

Thank you for choosing Whipkins Cove! A few notes:

SUMMER RENTALS: We try to book complete weeks during the summer. Weeks that haven't rented by mid-May are available for shorter stays. Please call or email if you're not able to book these online.

FEES: The cleaning fee goes directly to the housekeeping team. It's high... but we demand a lot of them. Beds are triple sheeted (bottom sheet... then top sheet - down comforter - top sheet). Makes the beds feel great, but takes housekeeping more time. They also stock toiletries, coffee pods and other items. Guests usually rave about the great job they do.

TAXES: Sales taxes are also high (14.5%) but they help keep Watauga Lake beautiful.

FISHING: Watauga Lake has great sport fishing (according to people who know more about fishing than I do). The common fish can be caught right off the dock or shoreline. Adults need a fishing license, which is available at stores and gas stations. Check the Dry Hill Diner (address in house) for rates and licenses.
