About this property

Lavender Hill Farm House with View, Gardens, Walk to the Beach

Lavender Hill Farm is well known on Vashon Island for our U-Cut lavender field and farm store, open from mid June through early August. The property has 1000 lavender plants and more than 15 varieties, as well as beautiful gardens and stunning views. Come vacation in this tranquil setting in a 1930's farmhouse, thoughtfully updated and spacious enough for a reunion of friends and family. The long farmhouse porch is the perfect spot for morning coffee overlooking the gardens, fields, Quartermaster Harbor and Mount Rainier. Listen to the bees as you stroll through the fields and stroll two blocks into the town of Burton for supplies and coffee, take a walk in Burton Acres Woods, wander the Outer Quartermaster Harbor beach or rent kayaks or stand up paddle boards at Jensen Point.

The house is light and bright, with nicely appointed guestrooms and three bathrooms for guests. The kitchen works for a crowd, with three ovens, a large center island, 5 burner cook top and large pantry - and there's a second fridge in the basement. The living room has two seating areas, the dining room table seats 8 and the long porch table seats twelve.

Enjoy the stars at night, and spend your days mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking or hiking. Read a novel or work on your latest project. The house has robust wifi, as well as Apple TV and Roku with Hulu Live plus a large DVD collection. Visit the Vashon Heritage Museum, the farmers market, take in a film at the Vashon Theatre, a performance at the Vashon Center for the Arts, and check out local bands, restaurants and shops.

A delightful escape
I cannot say enough good things about our stay at the Lavender House. We had 5 siblings + significant others + children gather for a long weekend and had the most wonderful time. If possible, the house and lavender farm are even better than the pictures depict. We had a couple children on the younger side so, between nap times, did more staying in than going out and it was a wonderful home to just hunker down and hang out in - with the porch overlooking the farm and water getting lots of use. We also did venture out to the great short hike nearby in Burton Park / Woods which was perfect for a gorgeous hike and easily doable for kids and someone 7.5 months pregnant. We also explored shops on the island, the quaint downtown, and farmers market. Cathy was wonderful to work with and clearly cares deeply for her guests, house, and farm. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Lavender Hill Farm was perfect.
The property is beautiful. Cathy was kind and helpful, willing to answer any questions about the house or island. We had everything we needed in the house and enjoyed the covered porch and amazing view.

Paradise - Perfect for Our Family
Lavender Hill was the perfect spot for our family gathering. The property accommodated the needs of our 92 year old matriarch as well as the rest of our clan. Spotlessly clean, luxuriously comfy beds, and a well appointed kitchen complemented the chic decor, generous host, and spectacular views. Highly recommended!

About the host

Hi, I 'm Catherine MacNeal. I have had a career as an actor, as well as a producer, personal assistant, teacher, co-founder of Cambodia Tomorrow, which provided education and support for children at Kompong Speu Orphan Center and the surrounding community for 13 years. I have four children - two attorneys, one teacher and one college student. After 13 years as a summer resident and lavender farmer, I now live full-time on Vashon Island.

Why they chose this property

I've been visiting Vashon since 1994, when good friends moved here from Los Angeles. It's a very special place. I bought a small cottage in 2003 and fell in love with the lavender farm when our family came to pick lavender. In 2006, we were lucky enough to buy it. We kept the previous owners' tradition of opening a U-Cut stand and farm store and have learned a lot about lavender. For three years, we participated in the lavender farm tour, a wonderful weekend with 2500 visitors coming to enjoy the lavender. I have continued the U-Cut tradition, adding a farm store and opening each summer during lavender season (mid-June through July) for visitors. The farm is also available for events, meetings and vacation rentals.

What makes this property unique

What do I love most about Lavender Hill Farm? The view is amazing - Mt. Rainier, the boats in the harbor, the lavender. It's the coast of Maine and Provence rolled into one, with snow-capped mountains as a bonus. It's quiet and the stars shine bright. I love working with the lavender - very relaxing. The house is big - it's so cheerful and so many places to curl up with a book. There is room for a lot of guests and the porch is the perfect gathering place! It's also so easy to get here. The airport is a 20 minute cab ride to the ferry, and the island bus comes to our corner (and sometimes right past the house). The island has good restaurants, an arts scene, pools, and lots of opportunities for biking and hiking.
