Property not as described

  • 2 of 5

I liked the apartment and the neighborhood and the location is great. The apartment is on the backside of the building, so it is very quiet for NYC, and it is a nice size - I wouldn't mind living in the apartment. Unfortunately, the furnishings and amenities did not match up with how the apartment is described - that is why I am giving it only 2 stars. The apartment was advertised as having a queen size bed and a pullout sofa/futon. The bed was a double, not a queen. The sofa was a loveseat, so it wasn't possible for an adult to sleep on it and it wasn't a pull out or a futon. My husband and I need at least a queen size bed, so we were very uncomfortable trying to sleep on the double bed, and neither of us could sleep on the sofa. Plus, there weren't any extra sheets or blankets. The TV gets no signal, therefore it is useless, which normally wouldn't be a big deal, but I wanted to get up early and watch Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding and was really disappointed when I found out the TV didn't work. The internet connection is useless. We were able to connect once or twice, but we couldn't load any pages. I am talking about checking email, not streaming. If you are going to advertise WiFi, the users need to be able to check email, use google maps, etc. The ad also mentioned "designer" furniture. That is a laugh. There was one metal folding chair, two wooden stools, one love seat, one double bed, one cheap Ikea table, and an end table under the TV that looked like someone discarded it on the curb and the owner picked it up for the apartment. I don't really care about designer furniture, but don't advertise it if you aren't going to deliver it. Looking at the photo of the apartment as I write this review, there is a nice coffee table, a nice side table, and a lamp - none of those are currently in the apartment. Also - mid afternoon on check-in day, a guy shows up to install a new toilet. Did the owner text us or call or leave a note to let us know that there would be a maintenance call - NO! There is no excuse for not letting us know that the guy was coming by.

Great vacation stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here a few nights and loved it. Tiffany was easy to get a hold of if there were any questions. The location was perfect an easy walk to the theatre district, Times Square and Central Park. It was also a safe feeling neighborhood and very quiet at night. I would definitely stay there again if available.

Spartan but liveable and convenient

  • 4 of 5

This studio apartment was in the scary sounding neighborhood Hell's Kitchen, a neighborhood which WAS scary not that long ago but now feels very safe. The location is very convenient to Times Square and Midtown, and also close to several subway stops so it was easy to get around the city. There is a convenience store at 9th and 51st, which was good (if a little pricey) for groceries. The apartment itself was fine for my stay (and would be for a couple's stay); it would not be good for three or four people. It of course is

bigger than midtown hotel rooms that cost much more. The furniture is functional but spare and the kitchen is minimally stocked in terms of cookware, table settings, and spices. The owner said she preferred being contacted via texts but once I had paid for the apartment (which I did several months before my trip) she did not respond to different texts I sent requesting information about check in, etc. I would stay here again on another visit to NYC.

Great location, tired property/property owner

  • 3 of 5

This location on 51st St. between 9th & 10th Ave was ideal for a 5-nite stay with my wife and 16 year-old daughter (the trip was a sweet-16 birthday present). As other have written, the choices of dining are outstanding. I would recommend Ippudo for gourmet ramen (they have discounted lunch specials), and Shimizu for sushi - both are just down 51st St. about a block east. Wish we'd had more time to sample the other fine restaurants within a couple blocks!

And do not miss the Amish Market on 9th Ave for perhaps the best groceries/prepared meals in NYC, at reasonable prices!

Broadway theaters are a 10-minute walk, and nearest Metro station is a 5 minute walk. (Dear Evan Hansen was our all-time favorite production!)

The cable TV still didn't work, as a previous occupant noted in their review. The internet was poor: the property owner gave us several Wifi passwords, and the best one we could access would drop about every 10 minutes. Streaming video was out of the question.

The property owner is a very busy person, which was unfortunate, because she was unable to respond to and resolve these problems during our 5-nite stay.

The property furnishings are in need of attention - many of the furnishings in the listing's pictures - tables, lamps, etc. - are no longer there. For instance, it would have been convenient to have a lamp on the dresser next to the bed. The bathroom is quite tired: the decorative lamp bulbs above the mirror are down to 3 bulbs - the other 5 are empty sockets, and rust is encroaching on the fixture, as an example. The stairwell was jammed with "construction stuff", such as drywall/plywood sheets, etc.

To sum it up, the location is fantastic, the property is in need of an overhaul, but the price is economical. If you require video entertainment/streaming, you might want to look elsewhere. In spite of the current flaws, we'd stay here again.
