Beautiful Large Forest Cabin 1.5 Miles North of Custer/13 Acre

Bedrooms 5
Space 4,000 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cabin, 6 bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 17)

My property is called Elk Valley because it is located on a secluded ridge 100 yards from the Black Hills National Forest. I have a small valley or meadow where Elk, Deer and Wild Turkey live. The Elk come in from the National Forest and water at my pond about 75 yards behind my large 4000 sq ft 'cabin.' A private service road connects the house and land to Elk Valley Road, which is right off of SD Hwy 89 or 'Sylvan Lake Road' a historic Hwy that continues up to Sylvan Lake Lodge, Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore is 20 minutes from Elk Valley, Crazy Horse monument is only 5 minutes away. Elk Valley is a magnificent place, secluded yet minutes away from Custer and easy to locate. Mornings are especially beautiful at this unique place which has a spiritual quality.

About Tim Wilka

I am 62 years old, semi-retired, two adult children. I graduated from O'Gorman HS in 1973, Univ. of Notre Dame in 1977, and USD School of Law in 1983; I love spending time in Custer, South Dakota at Elk Valley, it has a spiritual aspect to it that can only be experienced by going there.

Tim Wilka purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Tim Wilka chose Custer

It was built to be my retirement home where I can keep my horses. Custer County is the most beautiful county in the Black Hills--and that means maybe in South Dakota. It is a tourist town of 2,000 people that services the entire USA and still remaims small and where you want to move to and either retire or raise a family. Custer has 12 churches.

What makes this cabin unique

It is near everything in the Black Hills; It is comfy, restful, and the land is as beautiful as it gets; I have an exercise room, a steam shower, foosball, pingpong, outdoor activities, just about anything you want to do-like camping or making a bonfire in the back yard.

Nice house, wasn’t very clean and quite a few of amenities did not work

  • 3 of 5

Although listed on VRBO with wheelchair capabilities, there was no ramp upon arrival. Owner did get temporary ramp installed next day but I would confirm handicap accessibility. There were no bars in shower or bathroom, etc. DVD players did not work, dryer had to be run 5 times to dry clothes, element went out in oven. Location was great, house was big, some work inside just needs to be tended to.

Owner's Response: I am very disappointed with this review and do not agree with it. I consider it to be a little vindictive. This group was given everything promised and more: My house is "handicap" accessible and has not been represented as one having a ramp. When the guests arrived and indicated to me their elderly father had a heavy motorized wheelchair, my handyman was over there within 30 minutes and provided a ramp for their stay; He did not arrive "the next day" but within a very short period of time The DVD players DID work as this guest took one of them out of the master bedroom upstairs and moved it downstairs and both DVD players were stacked on each other in a mess. One of them was wrecked; The dryer works perfectly, the guest did not turn of the "wrinkle free" option which uses "air drying." The element went out in the oven the last night the guest was there (normal wear and tear) and it was replaced the next day by my handyman before the next guests arrived I received a 5 star review right before these guests arrived and I am expecting one or two more 5 star reviews from guests who stayed this past few weeks who have already indicated they want to come to Elk Valley again As far as my house not being clean, it was deep cleaned before these folks arrived and describing it as not clean is simply false

With our family spread out over a very large area it worked great to use the cabin to spend a quality week together in the southern Black Hills.

Great Christmas in a GREAT place!

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for my family and friends who enjoyed having Christmas here and appreciated we could include our furry dog friends as they are family too! The game room was fun to have and all really enjoyed that. The kitchen was really nice for preparing meals and the fireplace was awesome for our stockings and kept us warm at our stay there. Lots of room and good to separate kids who needed naps and lots of room to spread out. Really beautiful in the snow!

Custer Stay

  • 4 of 5

Property was in a great location for making it a home base for all that we wanted to do while in southern Black Hills. TV and internet stopped working after the first day. House was good, spacious, good for a large group.

Owner's Response: Virginia was a very nice guest but I have to disagree with her about my TV and wireless. I have always provided wireless and I did not know she could not access it. I wish she would have called and I could have given her the password which is located on the back of the router. The TV has always worked but the remote simply needed a new battery. I am at Elk Valley right now and the TV is on

Property was great and very peaceful.

In a great location to see all the sites and worked perfect because we were able to leave our dog for a short time and return to let her out and then go do another activity.
