About Star Decker

Gene Parsons has a wide variety of skills which he puts to good use operating his current business as well as maintaining the StringBender Cottage property. Moving to Caspar in 1970, Gene teamed up with local friends and carpenters to build his custom machine shop, his own home and the cottage. As far back as the late 60’s and into the late 80’s, Gene had a full-time career as a musician and recording artist. As a multi-talented singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, he toured with such bands as the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. His talents were also used in the recording studio with such greats as Randy Newman, Arlo Guthrie, The Everly Brothers and The Rolling Stones. Currently Gene is happiest working in his custom shop where he manufactures and installs the StringBender mechanism in client guitars as well as other artistic projects. One of those pet projects is the building of a 1/8th scale, real live steam locomotive, part by part!

Star Decker is a native of Mendocino County with strong roots in local culture and history. Raised on ranches she has trained horses, gardened, landscaped and run family businesses. An adventurer, she has traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe sometimes by herself or accompanied by her horse and dog. Other interests include; community volunteer work, playing music, reading and various art projects. Today she is happiest at home creating the beautiful garden and landscape of the property and providing a lovely and warm atmosphere for the guests at StringBender Cottage. Both Gene and Star have a long history in the local coastal areas as well as the county. They are always willing to share their 'insider' knowledge and stories with guests.

Star Decker purchased this house in 1975

Why Star Decker chose Caspar

We chose to live here for the ocean, the weather and a small, rural community with a LOT of culture, art, music, events, good restaurants, and so much more.

What makes this house unique

The forest setting, wildlife such as deer, fox and wild turkeys, beautiful organic garden, excellent hiking/biking/horseback riding trails, interesting owners that honor and respect privacy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Star~ The cottage was amazing. We definitely enjoyed our stay in Caspar. We did the waterfall hike at Russian Gulch and we got to walk around Fort Bragg and downtown Mendocino. We'd definitely like to come back and stay someday. Thanks again for coordinating and making our stay smooth and comfortable. Take care.

They Did It Again!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at the Stringbender Cottage, and we had another awesome vacation. I can't say enough about the cleanliness and ambience {peaceful and pleasant} of this property. We have stayed at over a dozen different VRBO properties in the past decade, and these hosts provide the best experience for their guests as far as we are concerned.

Star and Gene couldn't be nicer, and they genuinely care about the comfort and enjoyment of their guests. Thank you both for your hospitality! Can't wait to visit your cottage and the Coast again.

Owner's Response: These guests point out a very important point about how we take care of our patrons. We have traveled and used vacation rentals ourselves and I have studied and learned what counts for comfort. Cleanliness is a big one so we are thorough between each guest. This reviewer has allergy issues so they require a fragrance free environment which is one of the reasons I have applied the new rule of " FRAGRANCE FREE" in our cottage. Occasionally certain guests apply excessive amounts of perfume or cologne which is difficult to air out on "turnaround" days. This can be very offensive as well as posing health concerns to incoming guests. We thank all potential inquiries for their cooperation and understanding.

Amazing cottage in the perfect location for us. Literally right down the street from amazing mountain biking trails, close to ft Bragg and Mendocino. The weather was perfect for sitting on the back deck surrounded by flowers and greenery. The cottage had all we needed for a comfortable stay. No TV but that allowed for more talking with my husband!! This cottage was so clean and well taken care of. Cannot wait to come back. Thank you Star and Gene for sharing.

Blissful, charming, comfortable, private, quiet

  • 5 of 5

What a getaway! We arrived during a deluge and 6 hours later were reading on the porch in brilliant sunlight. The cottage was the perfect temp at all times. With the full kitchen, we made as many meals a day as we wanted: from gourmet breakfasts and dinners to light lunches or packed picnics (we brought all of our own food/drinks). The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the bedroom was quiet and dark. Despite bringing our own toiletries, we were pleasantly surprised by those provided by Gene and Star. We did not spend a lot of time exploring the grounds, although we spent a significant amount of time in Mendocino, Noyo (The Crows Nest Bar and Grill for drinks and TV), and nearby beaches (Caspar)/state parks. The cottage is 5 minutes from Caspar Beach, which is beautiful with shells and sea glass. The lighthouse is 5 minutes down the road from with an easy 15 minute walk to the coast. We took the "dirt path" to the lighthouse and avoided the crowd during the Whale Festival. Gene and Star provided several helpful brochures and maps of the area, which gave us ideas of what to do/where to go. There isn't cell or TV service and wifi is spotty at the cottage. In fact, cell service and wifi are touch and go in the whole area. That being said, it was nice to "unplug." Our favorites of our long weekend include: the comfort of the cottage and access to the amazing area. We'll definitely go back thanks to the comforts of the cottage and the kindness of the owners!

Owner's Response: It is wonderful when my guests enjoy the comforts we create in our home. We are a small "Mom & Pop" so we take extra care to the details. I am curious, however, that these folks did not find excellent WiFi and I think that is odd. We pay for high speed internet and most of our guests use and rely on the WiFi during their visits because much of the time they have no cell service. We have not received any complaints previously. We intend to look into this as we want our guests to have good internet service.

Better than expected

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to write this review because we want to keep this little "Gem" all to ourselves. Usually the VRBO we rent is a let down from description and photo's. Not Stringbender. We loved the location, privacy and decor. It's the perfect getaway for a couple.
