Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 3 Baths, (Sleeps up to 16 with five couples)

Located just minutes from Old Rag Mountain, Whippoorwill Manor Farm is a destination that affords the rare experience to rent your own farm for a week or a weekend. The house was completely restored in 2005 adding a new addition that houses a large modern kitchen, and 3 full baths (over 3,800 sq. ft). One of Washington's top interior decorators designed the home specifically with the idea of group/family use. Thus, the home has maintained its unique historical charm to include its wide hickory planked floors, log cabin rooms with stone fireplaces, and hand crafted wood work throughout the home. The original part of the house (log cabin) dates back to the 1700's and is the second oldest structure in Madison County. The farm even has a game building out back that's great to enjoy a drink while playing darts, foosball or shuffleboard. There is also a professional outdoor ping pong table. The house has all the modern conveniences to stay connected including, direct TV and wireless internet.

Great nearby outdoor activities such as: climbing Old Rag MT (the most spectacular hike in VA) or hiking White Oak Canyon to see its impressive upper and lower waterfalls, both parking lots are approximately 7 miles from the house both located in Shenandoah National Park. Whippoorwill Manor Farm is just minutes from Graves Mountain Lodge and both Prince Michel, Sharp Rock, DuCard Vineyards and Early Mountain.

Our objective is to treat our guests the same as we would our extended family/friends that come and visit the farm. Therefore, the important essentials are provided which includes: linens, towels, blankets, essential paper products, cleaning supplies, some laundry detergent, coffee, spices and condiments (no guaranteed stock), charcoal, lighter fluid and wood for fire place (some local cabins charge $40.00 just for the firewood). There is also a 25 pound a day ice maker. To assist in keeping the cleaning fee modest, you will need to make your own bed. Covers and blankets are on the beds with its sheets folded at the base. Finally, our Caretakers (Bill and Delores) live nearby and are available to personally address any concerns or questions you may have. Please be advised that the farm has the best available Internet in Madison County but it is not city speed and is not unlimited so we request you download videos prior to visit and not conduct gaming during stay.

The 110 acres with its miles of trails along with exploring the many restored barns provides the occasion to enjoy a real connection back to the land and history of our country. The Hop field next to the home adds an additional ambience to the grounds during the growing season. During the Colonial period, Virginia was known for its Hops. During the Civil War, the Farm was used as a camp by the Confederacy on several instances during the campaigns of 1862 and 1863.

The Farm is a wonderful place for family vacations and reunions as well as a quiet retreat for business strategy development and/or executive team building events, an ideal setting for cooking out or hosting an outdoor/catered event. The property is only 15-20 minutes from the historic towns of Culpepper, Madison and Sperryville, ideal for shopping and quality restaurants. Additionally, it serves as a perfect home vacation site to explore the many historic landmarks of the Shenandoah Valley and its vast natural beauty.

Come enjoy this truly unique and beautiful property for a peaceful and fun vacation or come with a group of friends for a long weekend to hike, bike, and enjoy each other with a number of local attractions and activities. On the property, there are a number of activities to enjoy such as volleyball and horseshoes along with a great skeet shooting area, a mechanical thrower is available that guests may use (guests responsible for clean up). In the evenings, the fire pit is a wonderful place to tell stories and share experiences year round. In the large field above the house fireworks are permitted (if not in drought conditions and guests responsible for clean up). The farm has an outdoor dry sauna (use at own risk and must follow instructions in welcome book) in the back yard and can be enjoyed year round. The house has a full back up generator in the event power is lost so your stay will not be disrupted if a major storm strikes.

The owners have great connections with local Civil War Historians, story tellers, musicians and even a terrific private chef that can be engaged to visit the farm during your stay. Chef Aubree can work with you on a custom menu or has fixed course menus that she can prepare for your group. She can also augment your group as direct support by the hour. Many have had her prepare the dinner and next day's breakfast and lunch

The farm can be enjoyed year round. The owners really like being at the farm during the winter months as the Mid Atlantic usually has fairly mild winters so during the day it's warm enough to be outside and hike without the bugs and thorn bushes scratching you and you come back at night and enjoy huddling around the fireplaces at night. During the winter months, the owners will provide a full refund if one of those rare snow storms hit the area and prevent safe travel.

For cycling enthusiasts from other parts of the country, the mountain scenery coupled with the quiet, safe, country roads are a national treasure to be experienced. The very popular Tour de Madison Bike Ride (held in mid-May every year), and the ride enjoys national stature. The Tour is not a race, but rather designed as a wonderful way to see the great scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have routes for the entire family; you can choose between 16, 40, and 62 miles along country roads. If you can't make the actual weekend, the owner will provide you with the specific routes of the Tour so can enjoy them during your stay. Your group could even do a different 'century' every day for a week and beyond the initial few miles leaving/returning to the house; you will not have to cover the same ground twice! The owners even several mountain and road bikes available for your use, both male and female bikes (use at your own risk).

Hosting "Events" are done by exception and involve additional fees and usually require renting of port a john and tent depending on the size of the group. Rental dates must include both set up and tear down as well. Any outside service hired to support the event must be insured.

About Eric Vollmecke

I'm Eric co-owner of Whippoorwill Manor Farm which part of it has been in our family since 1950. I've traveled to over 155 countries and all the states but believe that this is one of the most beautiful places on earth in a region full of great American history. We strive hard to maintain a park like atmosphere of the home and property. Our friends and extended family love to spend time together here as there is so much to do year round. You never need to leave the property. The farm also grows hops used by local craft brewers. A sample is provided for your enjoyment, my motto, beer not wine!

Eric Vollmecke purchased this farmhouse in 1980

Why Eric Vollmecke chose Madison

Our family has been enjoying this area since my grandparents purchased the adjacent farm in 1950. In 1980 our father purchased this property and began working his dream to create a 'park like atmosphere' for his family and friends to enjoy. All the barns and buildings were refurbished in the 1990's, and finally in 2004, he began the complete renovation of the farm house. A new wing was added for the baths and the kitchen as prior to this time the house had no running water.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Despite the dramatic growth of the Washington metro area and the expansion of the suburbs, this property remains as quiet and beautiful a place as it was 50 years ago and yet it is only on average 1.5 hours from Washington DC. We are avid hikers and cyclists and we believe there is no better venue for enjoying both in the entire mid-Atlantic region.

We love yellow house!

  • 5 of 5

Our third time with the same group of friends and family did not disappoint. Eric, the owner, is fantastic at communicating details and Delores, the caretaker, is very sweet and polite.

The house is just a great place to relax, mingle, hike, cook, nap, play, and generally forget about other ‘stuff’ for awhile.

We left like we always do; sad to be leaving but planning our return.

Deceptively SPACIOUS. Foodies Rejoice!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth Valentines Weekend at Whippoorwill Manor. The house and rooms are all warm and welcoming. The property easily sleeps 18 for a large family gathering. We usually go with five or six couples.

Although the original home was built in the 1700's, it has been tastefully added to, remodeled and updated for modern day comfort.

We bring along all the ingredients for some pretty elaborate meals and have no trouble finding all the kitchen tools and modern appliances we need to prepare the meals in this wonderful low-key environment. (if you have done a group trip like this, you can appreciate how nice it is not have to transport all that stuff along or be frustrated to not find them at your destination)

As it turned out, even though it rained most of the weekend, we were able to hike some of the trails, relax in the sauna, play shuffleboard, work a jigsaw puzzle, watch the UVA/Tech game and a movie on the big screen in the super-comfy media room, play nostalgic tunes through the Bose bluetooth speakers, and tell lies by the fires.

If one were to walk all the trails in one day, they total up to be about the same distance and vertical rise as a hike on nearby Old Rag Mountain.

By the way, romantics will enjoy a "Valentines Weekend" just about any weekend in February and still be thrilled with the flowers and chocolate desserts even if it is not exactly the 14th.

Everything you could want for a Virginia country vacay!

  • 5 of 5

The farm has absolutely everything: proximity to historical and natural attractions (and a book that lays out the best way to see them with recommendations for restaurants, wineries, shops, all the local insider tips!), bedrooms, rec rooms, bikes, games, lounging rooms, reading rooms, scenic lookout, fire pit, Biergarten, huge exquisite kitchen completely stocked with every dish, gadget, spice that you might need (you’ll be tempted not to go see the attractions because hanging out with extended family and friends is so easy here). The beds are high quality mattresses with luxury linens. Everything here is absolutely top notch. Bring a crowd. Stay for four days. It’s nearly life changing. We’ll be back-soon.

perfect for a weekend with family and friends

  • 5 of 5

Everyone in our party was impressed. Renters have already (and rightly!) praised the facilities and the beautiful location; I want to stress as well that the owner is proactive, responsive and helpful. We had a fantastic time at Whippoorwill Manor and would definitely return.

History, beauty and comfort in one place!

  • 5 of 5

This property offers everything we could hope for. Beautiful views and wildlife, peaceful and tranquil setting, challenging hiking trails and privacy. The night sky was amazing and the house warm, well equipped, full of local and personal history, and very comfortable. We were visiting from Australia and stayed the night with friends. Wishing we had stayed longer!

We look forward to coming back!
