Hilltop Victorian House with Garden Near Staten Island Ferry

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Our renovated 1870s refuge is the closest you can get to a comfortable old house in the country, but still be in New York City. The lush landscape with tree swing and play area allows you to switch off Manhattan, but it's just a 20 minute walk or four bus stops, down to the Ferry, then the greatest free ride in the world into town. You can see the Verrazano Bridge twinkling from our windows, and the sea from our street.

Indoors you will have room to spread out, cook dinner and relax after a tough day of tourism. Just bring your clothes, we provide everything else. Extended family and friend groups of 5-9 are our specialty. If your crowd is bigger, we have another apartment upstairs in the same house.

You don't need a car, shops and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. But if you bring one, you will have no trouble parking on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' hassles you get elsewhere in NYC.

Staying here does require climbing steps, and some spirit of adventure. You need to feel comfortable in a diverse residential neighborhood where people of many races and economic groups live close together, in harmony.

Add a romantic, adventurous twist to your stay in New York.

Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries run 24/7, usually every half hour. The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15 minute walk downhill from the house. If you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $5.

Cheap Eats

Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island!

About Elena or Craig

This is a genuine family business run by me, my husband and children. We live a few blocks away and love having our guests discover the pleasures of Staten Island. We are more than happy to help you plan your trip and make the most of our wonderful city.

Elena or Craig purchased this house in 2009

Why Elena or Craig chose Tompkinsville

Our row of eight Victorian homes stretching up a steep hill above the harbor is a unique architectural phenomenon for New York City. Trees tower above you and cool breezes blow on those hot summer nights. Many of the neighboring houses are owned by the Ganas Community, a modern commune, which gives our block a particular friendly, easygoing atmosphere.

You are in your own world, but the city is at your doorstep. And instead of riding the subway, you get to sail across the harbor, watch the skyscrapers loom out of the horizon, and the Statue of Liberty so close you could almost touch it.

About our recent stay at Vertigo villa

It suited our family group very well. Appreciated the little extras flowers, tea, coffee. My granddaughter loved the dolls house, was her seat the whole trip.

Was wonderful to spend time with our lovely family on Staten island.

The children enjoyed the rope swing and were disappointed not to see any snakes, when they went on a hunt. The weather was great warm no rain,so lucky.

Obviously an old property, but it gave us the taste of old New York economical for a large group.

Will be recommending it to family and friends.

If you want limited space and expensive prices you go to the Waldorf

Great stay for our NY trip!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay. This old Victorian home (along with the neighborhood) has lots of character. The beds were comfy and having two bathrooms was great. We cooked breakfast before heading into the city, and really enjoyed the space after our busy, crowded days in NY. Plenty of very hot water came in super handy when it came time for showers. Would stay there again if we come back to the Big Apple.

Fun time in NYC

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this home. There was plenty of room for the two of us and the 7 adults and teenagers we brought with us. Even with snow during our stay, we never had a problem parking in front of the house. Riding the ferry into and out of Manhattan was easy and free, with parking cost of $8 per vehicle for 18 hours. There was a slight musty smell in the house, but it is not overwhelming. The radiant heat kept the house very warm even with the cold temps outside. Plenty of hot water for all of us, even when we were all getting ready at once. There are tons of towels and extra blankets and sheets available. We accidentally left an item behind, and the owner's son was able to meet us when we had checked out almost 7 hours before. We all agreed we would stay at this home again. Thanks so much for making our first home rental such a great experience!

Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

For two families of four, this made for a perfect spot for us! We visited the NYC by driving to the ferry, parking and as it was only $8 for the day, and FREE on Sundays, but get there early! Free Ferry Fares! We also enjoyed ordering from Joe and Pats Pizza! Faucet in the kitchen sink had a small issue, take your time to turn off the water.

Gave us the sense of New York living

  • 5 of 5

Upon arriving we were met by Helen, the caretaker. She showed my husband all around the house and where things were. There were nine of us traveling together for site-seeing and to see the play, Anastasia. Our first full day we walked to the ferry with no problems, but were exhausted walking back up to the house as it was uphill (we did have two little ones with us, so that made it a little harder). No worries, we just decided after that we would drive the car down to the ferry and park it for the day which worked great! The house had plenty of space for us and we had plenty of hot water for showers for all of us. I would recommend this house to anyone that would like to stay close for a good price! Thanks to Elena and Craig for sharing their home with us!

Plenty of room for my family

  • 3 of 5

We recently stayed here! Plenty of room for my family - the split room (2 bedrooms joined) was perfect for my son, his wife, and their 6 year old. Love the food suggestions and directions. Cons were the 25 minute walk to the ferry (and we are walkers and it took us that long), only 1 tv in the whole house, and the dryer that did not turn off. I expected no central air due to the age of the house, however, it did get very warm. The block that the house is on is very nice however, the neighborhood you walk to get to the ferry is dicey. Not bad for the price - however take your car to the ferry and park it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. Walking times may vary. The distance is exactly 1 mile, and on the way to the ferry downhill or flat. Coming back, you can get a bus most of the way, or a cab for less than $10. We had two room air conditioners working during this visit. But we have capacity for a third and will add it next summer. As for our neighborhood, we would prefer "diverse" to "dicey." But it's true that you do need to feel comfortable in an authentic urban setting. Disneyfication has not reached us yet, and we like it that way! It looks like the sensor did break on the dryer. But it still works on the timer, until we can replace it.

Elena is a wonderful person. The house was old but beautiful with privacy

  • 5 of 5

Elena is a truly wonderful person. She is very caring and had all the amenities in the house before we checked in. She was also willing to help us with any additional requests we had. She is the ideal host for any traveler. The house itself is not modern(but that was clearly explained and we had our expectations set). For us, it served the purpose really well and we would love to stay with Elena and Craig if we ever come back!

Our neighborhood is known as either downtown Staten Island or St. George --, a lively, "up-and-coming" diverse area across New York Bay from Lower Manhattan. You can meet people from all over the planet within a few blocks, and taste their foods for a reasonable price. Then hop on the Ferry to see the sights. If you enjoy an urban setting where people of different skin colors and economic levels live close together (in harmony), you will fit right in.
