About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath for two couples traveling together.

Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.

The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and BBQ grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.

This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.

There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house is a fun day time getaway for all ages. So much to explore here!

There is also a two room casita/guesthouse across the driveway with a double and twin bed, lights and heat for additional guests. Guests here can take advantage of the two full baths inside the main house--towels and robes provided

For the adventurous the tree house and an Airstream trailer are delightful summer spaces. The tree house has two twins on main floor and a queen in the loft. There is a shaded deck with pasture views. It is built around a huge heritage apple tree.

The Airstream is 1971 vintage with lots of privacy in the back pasture. Big covered porch with mountain views. The interior has been fully remodeled and has a double bed in front room and a twin down the hallway.

***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.

This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.

As with all of my properties, this is dog friendly for well behaved dogs and conscientious owners.

It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

Keywords: Private, yet convenient amazingly comfortable, peaceful and eclectic, fun, whimsical

About Melissa /Taos mgr.

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.

Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this house in 2005

Why Melissa /Taos mgr. chose Taos

I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.

What makes this house unique

Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Gorge yesterday. It made me think of you and your awesome style! You inspire!!

Beautiful southwestern Oasis!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this property. The property itself is truly an adventure. The main house is wonderful & completely updated with all of the luxuries of a fine hotel yet still comfortable and homey. Great bathrooms, comfortable accommodations, Melissa truly thinks of everything. From the casita, to the treehouse, to the airstream.. The attention to detail and work she has put in to make this property so unique is stunning. This property is top quality and a must book if you are staying in the area.

Owner's Response: Wow! Thanks for killer review!!! This home was my first in Taos. I did all of this for me initially, but now it has become one of my most popular vacation rentals. (I now have a total of ten!) Yes, so much to look at and enjoy inside and out. Plus its only a five minute deive to the Plaza.

Spacious and comfortable getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything with the property was great, from the well-appointed kitchen to the dining room table for a family meal to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Would definitely recommend for those looking to stay near Taos but still have a sense of relaxation and comfort. The treehouse and hot tub are pretty nice bonuses!

This is an awesome property

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a get away that feels like you are miles away, but the Taos square is only 5 minutes away, this is your place.

Light years away from the crowds, traffic and parking hassles, and a lovely outdoor porch with fireplace. The artwork and ambiance is fantastic. We brought home dinner 2 nights just to enjoy the place.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review! Yes, this is indeed a special place. There is such a sense of peace and tranquility here. You would never guess you are so close to the Plaza although the church bells on the Plaza are your wake up call. Everyone loves the front patio. Great spot for morning coffee or an evening outside with a fire in the fireplace. I'm glad you like my art and the ambiance of the property. This was my home ten years ago so I did it all for me. Now so many guests get to enjoy it. Do come for another visit. I just installed two big operable windows and did decorative tile around each of the two little kiva fireplaces. So much fun to make changes and upgrades!

Beautiful property in Taos

  • 5 of 5

My family was having such a great time here that we extended our stay by two days! We are the outdoorsy type and came to Taos to hike and play in the mountains. This property was perfect for us. My husband and I stayed in the adobe house and I absolutely loved the kitchen and the beautifully updated bathrooms. My teenage son stayed in the treehouse and he loved it. The property itself is fun to explore and is FULL of lovely flowers and a wild garden that I enjoyed spending time in. There are plenty of beds if you have a large family. We enjoyed the native species of bugs and snakes, but people who are terrified of wildlife may want to stay elsewhere. The owner was so very polite and responsive when I asked to extend our stay and we loved her personal touches around the house that made it feel like a real home. My well behaved dogs were welcomed at this property and they loved being able to explore and laze in the yard while I wrote or read books by the author who used to own the property. This place is very close to the square but also very private and away from the traffic in town. I would return in an instant, and hope to get the opportunity to in the future because my husband and I, both artists, found it so inspiring! This was absolutely one of my favorite rentals to date.

My kind of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Utterly peaceful adobe abode, ranchita from heaven, complete with birds and butterflies, and the hand-cranked cupboard -mounted can opener of my childhood. We loved it.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed my home. Yes it is quiet and peaceful. I had a guest once complain that I did not have an electric can opener! Vintage wall opener fun and certainly does the job.
