Were you that kid who devoured stories about finding an enchanted house in a distant, magical land?
Welcome.
Do you long to walk from raw, silent desert into a breathtaking, artist-designed Faberge egg nest?
Welcome.
Do you adore sprawling spaces...intimate nooks...echoing silence filled with the whispers of desert ghosts? Do empty spaces somehow fill you up?
Welcome, welcome, welcome.
Boulder House sits on fifteen private, boulder -strewn acres. There’s a footbridge, seasonal creek, sometime waterfall. The land is pure desert gold.
And then there’s the House.
We are talking about a level of luxury, detail and aesthetic sophistication rarely found anywhere, much less in such a spectacularly remote location.
There are rock rooms. A carved-wood snake banister. Handmade tiles throughout. Decades’ worth of curated textiles, ceramics, paintings. Color. Color. Skylights. More color.
Practically speaking, you will find a fully equipped kitchen, cable, landline, Sonos speakers and WiFi. Period wood stove ( initial wood provided) for cozy nights around the fire. Powerful, dual-zone heat and air. Private hiking trails, views for days, privacy - in short, all the comfort and luxury you need to enjoy a memorable High Desert vacation.
Our expanded sleep options mean more friends and family can join. We sleep up to 14 comfortably, in beds. Improved pool, solar heated (only available during April-October), jacuzzi, outdoor shower, hammock and courtyard areas mean you'll be just as comfortable outside as in.
Have a bolder desert experience. At Boulder House.

Easy, 20-minute drive to Joshua Tree National Park.
Hot tub in private courtyard.
Hiking trails.
Pool with desert and mountain views

Perfect annual family/friends getaway
This was our third annual stay with two other families at the Boulder House. We treasure each year. It is so peaceful and remote, yet there is so much to do and so many ways to be active - and to relax and have fun in the house. The Boulder House is a one-of-a-kind place. Pro tip: bring wet suits if you want to use the pool in the fall. :)

Super cool house and property!
We stayed here in December of 2022 with our family and friends including young adult and older teenage children. This house made our vacation an experience to remember. We all loved it! I would recommend arriving before dark as the drive in at night was very dark and a bit scary never having seen the road/ driveway in the day as it is a dirt road surrounded by large boulders. However, waking up to discover the property and see the sunrise from these enormous boulders was breathtaking. What a gorgeous place to take a sunrise, or sunset, stroll! The house is certainly eclectic and artsy! Not your typical rental home but one you will never forget. It took a minute to settle into the nooks and crannies of this eclectic home, but by the second day we felt comfortable in our new adventurous setting. Not being familiar with the California high desert we were a little concerned about the wildlife but were cautious on our hikes and only saw a mountain lion from the edge of the property from a pretty safe distance. It was by far one of the coolest places we have ever stayed. Would love to go back for more adventures!

The Boulder House is incredible!
Highly, highly recommend staying at the Boulder House! It's a one of a kind house with a great, unique character. Extremely clean, great communication from the host, and beautiful desert views! Between the hot tub, pool, hiking trails, and spacious indoors, there's really nothing left to be desired! Thanks again for a great stay :)

Great place for hiding out
Great place but has a lot of clutter. We did see mice in the house and bugs. The pool was an eyesore

Southwestern Expressionist experience
The house is very appropriately called The Boulders, situated as it is surrounded by large, weathered rocks. It is rather emote, down a long dirt road, with a drive of 15 to 20 minutes to the nearest town. Inside, the house is dense, one might say cluttered, with artwork. The paintings seem Southwestern in subject and Expressionist in style. For a short stay, it’s interesting. We celebrated Thanksgiving at The Boulders. It is not well-suited for the preparation of large meals, however. The kitchen is quite small and lacks a dishwasher and garbage disposal unit in the sink. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The boulder-strewn acreage is fun to explore, and Pioneertown is fun to stroll.

As a director and an artist, it's not surprising that the visuals were what got us. The road wound up through the desert, the yuccas and Joshua trees becoming more and more plentiful as the signs of civilization retreated. There was Pioneertown itself, perfect as a movie set (well, it was a movie set, duh!), Pappy and Harriet's, and then, of course, the boulders themselves - massive, majestic, at once welcoming and foreboding.

Why they chose this property

The house itself. Of course we appreciate the cool, minimalist modernism of so many brilliantly designed or re-thought desert cabins. But for ourselves, we wanted something a little warmer, cozier. Something that felt more like home. Boulder House, with its four bedrooms ( five if you count the guest bed in the computer room), living room, dining room, TV room, outbuildings and pool (available APRIL-OCTOBER), felt right. It had intimate spaces, private spaces, hang-out spaces, outside spaces, places to play and places to work. It sprawled over fifteen acres and had views of washes, a stream, the lights of Yucca Valley far in the distance. It was everything we had been looking for, and it was two hours from Los Angeles. It was home. Ours, and now, if you like, yours. Welcome.

What makes this property unique

Boulder House is a handmade house representing thousands of hours of work by various artists and craftspeople who poured their lives, labor, and love into their sanctuary in the desert. Whatever passion leads you to the desert, we invite you to add your spirit to those of the Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, dreamers, artists, and visionaries who have blessed Boulder House with theirs.
If you would like to contribute a colorful piece of broken ceramic to our broken ceramic garden bed, please feel free.
If you would like to document the contribution in our guestbook, or on Facebook, we would love to hear from you!
