About Holly

We are antique dealers, originally from Canada, who now have an antique store in Palm Beach, FL. We love the Caribbean and antique houses. We were not looking for a property when we tripped across the house, with the magnificent sea views, high tray ceilings and hand planned wood walls. The island of Salt Cay, with its friendly and individualist locals, clinched the deal. Six years later the house is completed, the journey had many twists and turns, joys and frustrations, it has been a labor of love, and well worth the effort. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to bring some of the history of Salt Cay, back to life. It is time now to share the life, with the islanders and future guests of the Half Way House. We are offering a one of a kind experience, in a one of a kind house, on a one of a kind island. Please come and enjoy.

Holly purchased this house in 2003

Why Holly chose Turks and Caicos Islands

The island of Salt Cay, is rugged, beautiful, and individualistic. While it has the popular activities, such as beaching, diving, snorkeling, biking, and touring, it offers much more. The pristine beaches, azure colored ocean, deep, starry nights, 18th and 19th century Bermudian buildings and ruins, fill the soul. Salt Cay can be magical and enchanting, it appears suspended in time, untouched by the modern circus of large, orchestrated, corporate resorts. The island of Salt Cay is one of the last holdouts of the old Caribbean, no Club Med here...tranquil, peaceful and serene, from the free roaming donkeys and cows, to the warm and welcoming locals, the island is all about individuality and character.

What makes this house unique

After the always fabulous and intensely beautiful flight to Salt Cay, each flight as individual as the island itself, the arrival at the Half Way House is always a delight, stepping through the wide front shuttered door, into the large downstairs great room, catching the sun light bouncing off of the waves, through the opposing door, it is the ahhhhh I am here moment. To step into the dignified presence of the wonderful old British colonial house, situated in such close proximity to the ocean, such a great combination of sea and history, I am thrilled to the bone. Cocktails on the ocean side deck, watching the Caribbean sun set, sleeping with windows open wide, with the sultry trade winds, caressing the sheets. The bright sun and lapping ocean in the morning, lunch and good conversation at Porters, Debbie's or Pats restaurants. The celebratory atmosphere of the early risers, waiting to take the ferry to Grand Turk, the Caribbean roosters and chickens, the donkeys and cows, dinner under a canopy of stars, this and more is the Half Way House and the island of Salt Cay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Holly,

Your house is spectacular! What a delight! The care and detail in the work and design is wonderful. Mr Pollie and Dan have been very helpful.

We love Salt Cay, we have seen whales and dolphins (a pod of dolphins travelling in front of the house yesterday morning) and today we will be going out with Richard for our dive lesson.

Two weeks still doesn't seem long eough, but one definitely wouldn't have been enough.

We had a question for you - tonight there is a Pay per View sports event that John is very interested in (a boxing event). I'm not sure if your tv is set up so Pay per view can be ordered, but might it me possible for us to order this event and then send you a payment for it? ( I believe it may cost approx. $100)

If not, no worries...but if it's possible John would just be thrilled.

Thanks again.

All the best,

Barb

Major WOW factor! Historic home by the sea.

  • 5 of 5

We spent our family holiday in Salt Cay, 2 weeks in beautiful Halfway House. Even better than the photos, this house was an elegant mix of antiques and 21st century comfort. For example, the living room was full of Victorian and Chinese antiques, but the sofas and armchairs were from IKEA, with white washable slip-covers. Everything was very clean, and the modern appliances and showers worked well. The beds were comfortable. The windows were amazing: all the mosquito screens were in perfect shape, without a single rip despite the recent hurricanes.

We visited a few months after the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. It was sad to see that every single home on the island had visible damage, and some were reduced to rubble. Reconstruction was proceeding, with a smile. You have to admire the resilience and optimism of the people of Turks and Caicos.

«Our » home had suffered damage like all the others, but had been repaired and was in good condition.

The view from the ground-level veranda and the upper-level gallery was astounding: the incredibly blue ocean with an occasional whale! We spent many happy hours on the comfortably-furnished veranda, including al fresco meals.

We ate many meals at the Coral Reef restaurant down the road, the food was delicious even while the building itself still showed signs of hurricane damage. One night there was a spontaneous beach party, a rake’n’scrape followed by a fish fry. People make their own fun. We felt safe and welcomed everywhere we went. Walking alone in the dark? No worries! The only danger are the free-roaming herds of donkeys, and they are quite harmless. If you trip or look tired while walking down the road, someone will surely offer you a lift.

The North Beach was great for snorkeling, and easily accessed by golf cart. The beach is fantastic!

The property owner was wonderful to work with, even providing us with baby furniture for our grand-child.

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review, it describes the house and island perfectly. Salt Cay is a special place, an out of the box vacation, one which you and yours obviously enjoyed. We take great pride that our guests love the house and the island as much as we do. Thank you for supporting Salt Cay.

Perfect! (The only bad thing was having to leave!!!)

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed on Salt Cay numerous times and H-H was by far the best find yet!!!

There are very few "new" homes to rent here, and the majority are old workers homes that have been remodelled to a basic standard.

This is fine if you like "rustic" etc.

We stayed here to celebrate a 50th Birthday, and were so glad we did!

H-H has been totally remodelled and is PRISTINE! however, non of the historical charm has been lost (indeed added to) and the entire house is full of charm and luxury.

It is perfectly situated on the waterfront (no beach, but not needed!) which is essential for whale watching from the comfy sun beds!

Clean modern kitchen, plenty of comfy sofas and a house manager on call for any issues / groceries etc.

Perfect for a couple or a family.

Footnote; the house is even better than the pictures show!

Salt Cay

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week at Half Way House on Salt Cay. The week was blissful relaxation and Half Way House surpassed our expectations. Often pictures lie - and when you arrive at a place it is substandard. Not Half Way House - it was as advertised - and we would recommend this luxury holiday to everyone

The Caribbean the way it was

  • 5 of 5

Once a year a friend and I try to get one step beyond where the rest of the world goes on vacation. We certainly found that here. This is a fantastic house in a truly special place. We enjoyed the satellite tv (read: NFL wildcard games) and fee wifi. The diving was good. The golf cart rental is a must. You absolutely must see North Beach. We went there every day and never saw anyone. The food at the Coral Reef restaurant just down the way is good and very convenient (I reccommend the meal plan). We just missed the whales but apparently they surface right out front of the house in season (late February is the best time). If you have a layover in Provo I highly recommend getting food to bring over as stores on the island are very limited. If you absolutely have to have it you better bring it with you. If you ever wondered what the Caribbean looked like fifty or even a hundred years ago this is the place for you.

Weekend in a peaceful paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is truly an exceptional property - the descriptions and pictures are good, but the experience is terrific. Coffee outside overlooking endless seas with cooling breezes, couldn't be better. Watching a blue heron having a wave bath next door - wow! the accomodations are perfect and if you are looking for some quiet, great food, friendly wholesome people you can't go wrong

Thank Holly and Rick - we will be back!

A perfect week!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a great week at the Half Way House in Salt Cay. The house was perfect and was equipped with everything we needed to feel right at home. It is obvious that the owners take great pride in the house and it is beautifully furnished and incredibly clean. The house is designed so that you get a constant cross breeze which keeps it cool both day and night. We loved sitting on the patio watching the sunset, stargazing at night and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. Salt Cay is one of the most unique places we have visited and we hope to come back soon. Thanks for everything! Don and Susan

Location

Car: not necessary

Whale watching in Jan/ Feb/Mar. from the front patio of the house.

Expect an out of the box vacation, with very accommodating and friendly locals, free roaming cows and donkeys, fabulous beaches, an old harbor swimming hole, incredible water vistas and historic ruins, all on a rustic Caribbean Island, very much the uncommon Caribbean.
