About this property

Downtown Harpers Ferry - In the heart of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Mountainside Lodge is located in the heart of historic downtown Harper's Ferry, and in the middle of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. Don't be fooled by other vacation rentals and B&B's claiming to be in Harpers Ferry when they are not! This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (Potomac Grille). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

Fabulous Trip in Harper’s Ferry
I loved everything about this trip. My family and I went for 2 nights to explore the town and do some hiking. The house was perfect, right in the center of town, clean, and fit right in with the whole feel of Harper’s Ferry. I highly recommend doing the ghost tour and hiking The Maryland Heights trail.

Perfect Harpers Ferry Location
Perfect location in Harpers Ferry. Beautiful view from the veranda of Maryland Heights and the Potomac/Shenandoah confluence. Parking included for two cars, which is very important in a town where it is so hard to find decent parking. The living space is as advertised: clean and comfortable. The noise from the restaurant dies down well before bedtime. We would stay here again!

Got married!
Me and my wife decided to get married at this lovely property in the heart of historical Harper's Ferry. Very spacious and all the amenities one could ask for, plus two parking spaces came with the listing. Fantastic views of the Potomac and the railroad station across the way. Not only did our wedding guests enjoy the ceremony was great that we could include our dog in the festivities and have him stay with us. All-in-all a fantastic experience!

Keeps getting better!
This is probably our 6th time staying here with different family members. Always fun to be engulfed in history. The view was awesome and the fall colors made it even better! There's lots of games & indoor activities if you get tires of the cool shops. Our favorite activity is walking to the river. The weather this time was even warm enough to get into the water! Not me...but our dogs did! AND we just found out that this marvelous host/owner rents out a place directly across the street! Sooo...if you have an extra large family or group, you can go at the same time! It's called Lookout Inn.

The owners purchased this property in 2004 and lived there for 4 years while they completed restoration of the building.

Why they chose this property

Location! While you will find many vacation homes with an address of 'Harpers Ferry', they are not actually IN historic downtown Harpers Ferry amongst the museums, natural beauty and history. But this one is, check out the map.

What makes this property unique

This vacation rental is located in the heart of downtown historic Harpers Ferry and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It offers fantastic views, historic charm and significance, and prime location. It is amongst museums, shops & restaurants, steps from the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O canal towpath, Jefferson Rock, Virginius Island, the Appalachian Trail, Maryland Heights and Loudoun Heights. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a short drive away, as are a number of Virginia Wineries. There is a large porch that looks onto the mountains, the Potomac River, and Harpers Ferry gap. Kids (and train-loving grown-ups) love to watch the trains pass on the very active rail line and you can even ride the train to this destination, as it is in walking distance to the Harpers Ferry train station, which services both MARC and AMTRAK. The house is bicycle friendly (there is ample space inside to store bikes), and being within walking distance to the C&O canal towpath, is a perfect spot for towpath riders. There are fantastic hikes, from easy to strenuous, right outside the front door (no need to drive). The house offers a large open floor plan perfect for larger gatherings, and the whole home is clean, nicely furnished and maintained. We strive for customer service and try to provide everything that a guest might need, including detergents and hand soaps, sugar, salt, pepper, basic spices, coffee filters, toilet paper, papertowels, napkins, etc., etc., etc. Our guests tell us over and over that this is the most well-stocked vacation rental that they have ever visited.
