Delightfully Quiet, on Lake Superior

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

Away from the pleasant clutter of Grand Marais, the drive back and forth to Hovland is almost traffic-free and fast. Hovland is also nicely close to Grand Portage (about 17 fast miles).

Rental cost/night (in at 3pm on 1st day; out by 12 noon on last day): for two people, $225/night plus 7%; for 3 people, $275/night plus 7%. 3 is the maximum number of people accepted, and 2 nights is the minimum time for a rental. All payments non-refundable. For payment methods, contact VRBO.

The most beautiful stretch of the beautiful Great Lakes, the North Shore of Lake Superior offers a truly uncluttered, authentic big lake/big woods vacation. Nothing urban or suburban, here! You'll walk the (safe) forests on a few of the 400 miles of hiking trails, poke around the stores and restaurants in the town of Grand Marais nearby, sit on the shore, and then see more nighttime stars than ever in your life (maybe even the Northern Lights).

Our private shoreline is flat ledgerock, easily accessible. (Nowhere on the North Shore is there 'beach sand.')

Our Guest House sleeps up to 3, with a sweeping lake view. The decor, in handcrafted hardwoods, is light and airy and includes a large living room/dining room with fresh wicker and wooden furniture, an ample kitchen fully equipped, and a washer-dryer. No wi-fi, no TV.

This cabin was designed and built by top Cook County builder Clarence Kemp for his wife and himself. Hand-done millwork, detailed combinations of area woods, a free-standing stove-style fireplace, and lots of large windows give this guesthouse a very cabin-y feel. Two of the sleeping rooms are upstairs, one with a king-sized bed and the other sleeping/sitting room has a single hide-a-bed and a tiny balcony. On the garage level is the other bedroom, with a full-sized bed and a porthole window. This room is more suitable for an older child or a single adult, and there is no bathroom on this level. No vehicle has ever parked in the three-car garage, and we use the space as an extra living room. There is a special patio and a large area of the shore reserved for the guests in this building. The footprint of the cabin is 1000 square feet (all but the one bedroom is upstairs).

Our second VRBO website describes the Main House (listing #254232) nearby on this more than three acre wooded, Lake Superior property. The two structures are not attached and are completely private from each other - they can be rented separately or together. You can see one building from another from some but not all windows.

Judge Magney State Park

Only 4.5 fast miles away to the west, lovely groomed trails lead to waterfalls, a canyon, then along the river.

Only 10 quick miles away to the west, a smaller river winds through the northwoods with several wooden bridges.

Grand Portage Fort and Interpretive Center

Just 17 miles to the east, this living history center has a full fort, wigwams, authentic birch bark canoes, and, nearby, the Pigeon River waterfall.

Grand Marais

To the east 17 miles, this town has the feel of a frontier, but with two different boat tours, four great places to eat (and several good ones), and Sivertson's Art Gallery. Stroll out Artist's Point, too.

Chicago Bay Mercantile

At 1.5 miles away, this friendly roadhouse has a grocery and a small deli with great sandwiches and pizza.

Seasonal Fun:

Early spring (mid-April through end of May) means great rock-hounding, the fiercest level of water in the waterfalls, and the blooming of the first wildflowers.

Summer (June 1 through mid-August) suggestions include looking for wildlife, including butterflies, wildflowers (the most are in June), the Perseid meteor shower (mid-August), warmer star/galaxy gazing, and great breezes off the lake.

Fall (mid-August though mid-Nov.) lasts longer now and the first half of Nov. is “the new October.” It features berry season (late Aug.-early Sept.), lightning over the lake, mushroom season (first half of Sept.), and leaf color. Shipping lanes move much closer to shore by September—so watch boats!

Best Times For…

Wildflowers (the true boreal forest ones)—mid/late May-mid/late June

Bears—May and June, when the yearling male bears are dispersing and looking for a territory and a furry girlfriend, in kind of a random way (they may pass by, going about their own business)

Moose—any day at dawn and dusk around an inland lake, or fall rutting season when roaming around more

Naniboujou—the brunch on Sundays, 8 am-2 pm

Bald Eagles and ravens—before the trees leaf out and then after they’ve lost their leaves (easier to see and they for sure aren’t engaged in vigorous “childcare”)

River Otters—dinner time at Angry Trout in Grand Marais (ask if they’re around today)

Birds (boreal species)—late May-mid-June

Butterflies—July and August, 10 am-4 pm

Dragonflies—July and August

Grand Marais summer events (three top):

Dragon Boat Festival (races in the harbor); Wooden Boat Festival (beautiful!); Fisherman’s Picnic (carnival)—look on web

Grand Marais fall events (two top): fall birding events/classes at North House Folk School; Crossing Borders (many North Shore artists have their studios open, from Duluth to Canada)—look on web

Closed in winter.

About The Owner

Growing up in the suburbs, we've always loved the Great Lakes. Not puddles, they are our 'inland sea,' the most wonderful freshwater resource on the surface of the Earth! Though we once owned a place on northern Lake Michigan, we've switched allegiance to the bigger, wilder, even better Lake Superior.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2007

Why The Owner chose Hovland

We chose the North Shore of Lake Superior because of its extraordinary natural beauty, in a whole different dimension from our pleasant suburban life. Whether we're hiking, watching wildlife, relaxing by the lake, eating at the Angry Trout or Crooked Spoon restaurant, or talking quietly by the fire, we just love it! Forget all the 'screens' of your life and look at all the stars instead!

What makes this cabin unique

The Hovland area of the North Shore is even more pristine and private than the nearby 'metro' of Grand Marais, Minnesota (population under 4000). If you look (carefully) from only a couple of places on our property, you'll be able to spot another house through the woods. In the bookshelves and on the refrigerator, you'll find info about our favorite trails, places to eat, natural history subjects, and more. You'll feel invigorated by the sound of the waves, the smell of the woods, and the sight of ravens, bald eagles, white pines, and endless birch trees, maybe even the river otters who come out on the 'big lake' to fish - and play wrestle!

Quiet, cozy, secluded spot on Lake Superior

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I recently stayed at this property to enjoy a quiet weekend of fall hiking among the autumn colors and North Shore scenery. This location was a very nice secluded spot just a bit north of Grand Marais on 61. We had the guesthouse to ourselves and really enjoyed our stay. One of the best features for us was the proximity to Lake Superior. We cracked open the bedroom window just a bit to listen to the sound of the waves on the shore as we slept, and the large window in the living room has a great view to the lake as well. The place was very clean and the hardwood interior really created the feeling of a cozy cabin. The kitchen amenities were great and provided all we needed to make breakfast in the morning but we could easily have stocked up on groceries and prepared full meals with a fridge, freezer, stove, oven, microwave, and plenty of cupboard and counter space all to ourselves. The only downside was the lack of shades/drapes for the bedroom window and several flies buzzing about the living room (which we made quick work of with a fly swatter we found in one of the closets). All in all, it was a great location for our up north weekend and we really enjoyed it. We would definitely recommend it to others interested in visiting this area. Cheers!

Beautiful, majestic views situated next to great hiking trails with private beach!

  • 5 of 5

This property was exactly what my partner and I needed before going back to graduate school and our respective jobs. The building was perfect for our routine of taking day hikes, cooking and BBQ'ing, and bonfires. Everything we needed for grilling and fires was provided. The main house and the guest house have separate beaches that cannot see one another due to the shape of the coastline. We ended our days with a fire out on Lake Superior and could not have asked for a more perfect hideaway to facilitate time together before our lives get busy again. We were quite thankful and have allot of gratitude that we were able to take our vacation here and will definitely keep this place in mind in the winter when snow shoeing and cross country skiing season arrives...

Quiet out of the way place

  • 5 of 5

Truly enjoyed staying at this property, the guest house was very well finished with lots of room. The windows were large with good views of the lake and woods. Very quiet even with guest staying in the main house there is good separation between units. My only complaint would be there should be some type of shade or curtain on the one window where you can see the main house. Will definitely stay here again.

Beautiful & Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a lovely, quiet fall weekend here in the Guest House, and we absolutely loved it! The property is beautifully secluded on a small point on the Lake, providing an excellent view of Superior, which is quite close, from expansive and finely trimmed arched windows. Somehow the designer managed to incorporate nearly wall to wall windows on three sides with a feeling of comfortable coziness, highlighted by the wood stove in the main room. The kitchen is neat, with a gas range and a window above the sink overlooking the Lake. The bedroom has a lot of closet space, and a huge bed which was very comfortable. We slept like we were at home. The furniture is a bit sparse - a love seat and a couple of plush recliners came to mind as desirable as we were sitting in front of the fire - but the cushioned chairs provided were very comfortable. We had a pleasant evening campfire on a rock slab along the beach, and the stars were unbelievably distinct, particularly the Milky Way. We also were able to enjoy the sunrise and moonrise over the Lake which, along with the rolling waves - some days gentle, some days crashing into the rocks gloriously - was just what we had in mind when we considered staying here. We really did not want to leave, and actually spent some time looking at nearby properties which are for sale, because the location (near Horseshoe Bay) is so choice for those wishing to experience the fullness of Minnesota's North Shore environment.

Great place.

This was a great cabin! It includes all the cooking supplies one would need and has a dish washer. The cabin was decorated very cute.

The only complaint would be that the second bedroom is located on the side of the garage and doesn't have electricity.

Owner's Response: The guests might have used the third bedroom which doubles as a sun room but has its own door, windows, electricity, etc. But I'm really sorry that the electricity didn't work in the downstairs bedroom.I'm going up there to stay myself--today-- and will check on this! I note that the third bedroom--the main one--is a big one with a king bed.Jeannie

Holland Guest House

  • 4 of 5

The guest house is just as pictured, the attention to detail on the woodwork and construction is stunning. The views from the guest house of the lake are picture perfect. The location is very secluded, no keys are provided and the doors do not lock. If security is an issue for you this would not be a good rental. The wicker furniture in the living room is not comfortable which is unfortunate if you want to relax and lounge at the end of the day. The rental is clean and well equipped (minus a toaster).

Owner's Response: Though I'm glad that they appreciated the beauty of the property and sad that they didn't find some of the furniture comfortable(the thick cushions should be visible in the photos),I'd like to respond about the locks. The doors do indeed lock from the inside--if they had contacted me,I would have sent the caretaker over to help them. No one else has ever had this problem. As to why I don't issue keys, this isn't a motel with a desk and keycards, and so anyone could go into town and duplicate the key.then perhaps return to disturb a later guest. For those who don't live in Minnesota (these people did not),we're near a vast wilderness--100 miles of lake in one direction and 400 miles of forest in the other--where people camp out (no burglaries)and hike the trails with backpacks of food and iphones(no criminals on the trails) and return,in our case,to a beautiful house on the lake. This is a place of extraordinary safety. It's not only pleasant but good for the spirit to accept that. Just don't try to jump across any waterfalls! Jeannie
