Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms + Lofts (Sleeps 4), 2 Bath House on 40 Acres in Escalante Canyon

Cross Creek Ranch (the property) is part of a 160 acre private in holding in the heart of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, seated halfway between Bryce Canyon National Park and Capitol Reef National Park. Located where Scenic Highway 12 ('The Golden Loop') crosses the Escalante River, it is the hiking trail head to the renowned Escalante Canyons. The main home and guest house (see vrbo 652481) are the only structures on the last 40 acres downriver before 75 miles of wilderness area that runs all the way to Lake Powell.

This getaway is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath river front home tucked in between large cottonwood shade trees with views on all sides of the Escalante Canyon, meadows, cliffs, and river. The 1300 sq. ft. house sits in a lush riparian oasis surrounded by 600 ft. sandstone cliffs. Hike from the front door to first class scenic wonders.

The 16x28 ft. great room has 15 ft. cathedral ceilings with a massive stone fireplace and a 4x16 ft. built-in window seat. Magnificent views can be seen from the fully equipped kitchen with concrete counter tops, cherry wood cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. The master bedroom with a king bed has a glass wall view of a 200 ft. slick rock pour off, and a glass mosaic tile shower. Beautiful canyon and meadow views can be seen from the second bedroom (queen bed) as well as the spacious 8x30 ft. deck. The home has excellent wi-fi and no TV. A high clearance vehicle is preferable for the concreted low-water river crossing (generally 1 ft. deep).

The $275 per night rate is based on 2 persons.

About Katie Howland 2

About the owners Doug, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug is a 35-year designer/builder who built this beautiful home. His youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. They built the house over a 7-year period in the late 90’s, commuting 7 hours each way from their home in Arizona. Doug now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona and on the North Shore of Kauai.

Katie Howland 2 purchased this house in 1993

Why Katie Howland 2 chose Boulder

Doug came across this property in the early '90s. He fell in love with it not only for its beauty, but also because it is both accessible and secluded with the Escalante River flowing through it.

What makes this house unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door and within an hour's drive (see above). Look for deer and wild turkey in the meadow in the mornings and evenings and watch the cloud shadows change over the canyon walls. Head up or down the canyon into rugged wilderness, and return home to comfort.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a joy it was to stay in your fabulous home in the middle of a glorious spot away, literally, from it all.

Richard and our non-children (James 28 and Chris 30) enjoyed days of hiking, while I enjoyed days in glorious solitude reading and working on music. Everything was perfect!

Perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a house and what a setting. The attention to detail and overall comfort made this house a perfect base for exploring the area or simply lounging on the deck with a book and a glass of wine. The night skies were spectacular. Look forward to our return

Amazing property right in the middle of it all

  • 5 of 5

We loved this spectacular home! Set in a very private green valley, the home was filled with windows framing the beautiful surroundings. The home was well-equipped and very comfortable, and we loved spending time on the large deck. It was so nice to retreat to the serene property after days hiking with the Memorial Day crowds.

The location is fantastic - across the street from the Escalante River trail head and Kiva Koffeehouse, a 5-minute drive to the Lower Calf Creek Falls recreation area, 20 minutes to Boulder/ Hell's Backbone Grill, and about 20 minutes to Escalante and the Hole-in-the-Rock Road hiking area. We also enjoyed the Cream Cellar hiking trail, which begins about a 3-minute walk from the front door. We have already told friends about this home and will be back!

Enjoy the Beauty of the Setting From all Angles

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in many VRBO accommodations and this home ranks amongst the top vacations. It is very well equipped, spacious, clean and architecturally remarkable. The perfect location to enjoy nature from both within the home and on it's deck. Many excellent hikes nearby without the national park crowds. Don't hesitate to select this vacation home.

Fantastic House Perfectly Located for Hiking in Grand Staircase Escalante

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for five days in May 2018 and were thrilled with everything about the accommodations. We drove in from Phoenix and stopped in Flagstaff to grocery shop. Therefore, we were able to cook all dinners at the house which had everything needed. We also packed lunches for hiking. Our first hike was just down the road on Route 12 from the house, Escalante River Trail where we hiked to a natural bridge and an arch. Much fun crossing the river about 6 times. Bring water shoes! We enjoyed the Anasazi Museum in Bolder and then hiked to the Lower Falls to a spectacular waterfall at Calfs Creek. Then we started doing slot canyons. First we did Zebra and then Peek a Boo and Spooky. These were very difficult and we hiked some 9 to 10 miles each day and navigating the narrow slots was vigorous, but amazingly fun! Returning to the beautiful house each day to shower, cook, and relax was just heaven! My only regret is we ran out of time to do more!!!

Perfect seclusion, incredible views!

  • 5 of 5

My only regret with booking this house was that we didn't stay a little bit longer. Views everywhere. From the kitchen, the reading nook, bedrooms, and best of all... the deck. Warm, cozy interiors make it perfect for relaxation. The kitchen is well equipped, and conducive for those who like to cook. The use of space in this house blew us away, and gave us ideas for our own. Loved it, and will return one day.

Private canyon with gorgeous views in all directions

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful home in a gorgeous private canyon. Loved the window seat, all the windows, and the lofts. Hiked out the front door. Had an espresso at Kiva Koffee up the road. Dinner in Boulder at Hells Backbone Grill.
