Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms + Lofts (Sleeps 4), 2 Bath House on 40 Acres in Escalante Canyon

Cross Creek Ranch (the property) is part of a 160 acre private in holding in the heart of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, seated halfway between Bryce Canyon National Park and Capitol Reef National Park. Located where Scenic Highway 12 ('The Golden Loop') crosses the Escalante River, it is the hiking trail head to the renowned Escalante Canyons. The main home and guest house (see vrbo 652481) are the only structures on the last 40 acres downriver before 75 miles of wilderness area that runs all the way to Lake Powell.

This getaway is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath river front home tucked in between large cottonwood shade trees with views on all sides of the Escalante Canyon, meadows, cliffs, and river. The 1300 sq. ft. house sits in a lush riparian oasis surrounded by 600 ft. sandstone cliffs. Hike from the front door to first class scenic wonders.

The 16x28 ft. great room has 15 ft. cathedral ceilings with a massive stone fireplace and a 4x16 ft. built-in window seat. Magnificent views can be seen from the fully equipped kitchen with concrete counter tops, cherry wood cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. The master bedroom with a king bed has a glass wall view of a 200 ft. slick rock pour off, and a glass mosaic tile shower. Beautiful canyon and meadow views can be seen from the second bedroom (queen bed) as well as the spacious 8x30 ft. deck. The home has excellent wi-fi and no TV. A high clearance vehicle is preferable for the concreted low-water river crossing (generally 1 ft. deep).

The $275 per night rate is based on 2 persons.

About Katie Howland 2

About the owners Doug, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug is a 35-year designer/builder who built this beautiful home. His youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. They built the house over a 7-year period in the late 90’s, commuting 7 hours each way from their home in Arizona. Doug now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona and on the North Shore of Kauai.

Katie Howland 2 purchased this house in 1993

Why Katie Howland 2 chose Boulder

Doug came across this property in the early '90s. He fell in love with it not only for its beauty, but also because it is both accessible and secluded with the Escalante River flowing through it.

What makes this house unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door and within an hour's drive (see above). Look for deer and wild turkey in the meadow in the mornings and evenings and watch the cloud shadows change over the canyon walls. Head up or down the canyon into rugged wilderness, and return home to comfort.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a joy it was to stay in your fabulous home in the middle of a glorious spot away, literally, from it all.

Richard and our non-children (James 28 and Chris 30) enjoyed days of hiking, while I enjoyed days in glorious solitude reading and working on music. Everything was perfect!

Private canyon with gorgeous views in all directions

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful home in a gorgeous private canyon. Loved the window seat, all the windows, and the lofts. Hiked out the front door. Had an espresso at Kiva Koffee up the road. Dinner in Boulder at Hells Backbone Grill.

Amazing house and property in the heart of the canyons

  • 5 of 5

We have been making plans to visit this property for five years. We stayed in the owner’s Kauai cottage on our honeymoon 15 years ago and when we discovered their Escalante property we knew we had to visit someday with our kids.

This quiet and private escape was the perfect break for our family while we traveled to complete the Grand Circle of National Parks and many other adventures. It’s a gorgeous home with views in every direction. We hiked to Maverick and Phipps Arch from our front door.

Katie was super responsive and very helpful.

We hope to come back again someday.

Wish we were still there...

  • 5 of 5

This was our third spring break in the Escalante area in 3 years - and by far the best house we've stayed at. We will be back! The house is nestled in a canyon with a grove of cottonwood trees. We'd driven past it before and thought it was lovely, never guessing we'd be so lucky as to stay there some day. Many visitors stop to photograph this spot from above. The location is perfect for accessing Escalante, Hole in the Rock Road, Boulder and Cannonville. The national parks are within reach, but why bother with crowds when you have the national monument? There is so much to do in the area that even after a week we could have stayed longer. Even better, the house's location is so charming that we wanted to get back after hiking to sit on the deck and enjoy the view. We were a family with 3 kids - ages 8, 11, and 14. The older kids loved staying in the lofts - they felt like they had their own space despite the relatively compact house. Thanks so much for a fantastic trip!

Beautiful and tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights at the Escalante Canyon Home. The house was tucked in some cottonwoods with views of the canyon walls and afforded wonderful solitude and quiet. The house was also well located - we enjoyed hikes out the front door up Phipps Wash and to Bowington Arch and the proximity of other trailheads (e.g., lower Calf Creek Falls, The Gulch, and trails off of Hole in the Rock Road). The house was well appointed and maintained. Moreover, the owners were responsive and ensured that our stay was a very special one. I highly recommend this property!

Great house, great location.

  • 5 of 5

We happily relaxed here each evening after our excursions to nearby Calf Creek and Hole in the Rock Road and the Burr Trail. The house fittings are solid, the beds comfortable and the colors outside from the red rock and the trees and grasses are gorgeous, especially to wake up to. I should also mention the pleasant and prompt communication with the owner. Pix of the house setting: tinyurl dot com/y7pevnfk
