Perfect family surf vacation location
Olavaquero is the perfect place to take your family for a peaceful and relaxing surf vacation. From surfing the long lefts at the river mouth to surfing the punchy & peaky shore break right out front, there are many options for you to choose from and all of it is within walking distance from Olavaquero. In fact, you can check the surf out front while laying in your bed! It's a very nice setup to say the least. The house is huge, well laid out and the pool is awesome. The crows nest (tower) is also nice for checking the surf. What we enjoyed the the most about the house was eating our meals in the downstairs open area where you could literally watch the surf or check out the sunrises/sunsets while you were eating. Our caretaker Alejandro was a great host and his cooking skills are absolutely amazing. He can cook anything you desire and I promise you will not want to eat at any of the local restaurants once you try his cooking. Whenever we got tired of surfing, he took us to tunnel beach (amazing) and also the local waterfalls which my wife and daughter really enjoyed. My family and I had a hard time saying good bye to Alejandro. We look forward to the day we come back to visit him and Olavaquero. The owner James was very responsive and he answered all of the questions I asked him....which was plenty. At first, I was a bit nervous about traveling to the area with my family (wife, 4 year old girl) for safety concerns but James reassured me there would be no issues. He was exactly right! We had no safety concerns at all and the people in the area are some of the friendliest people I have ever met in my many travels. My family and I truly enjoyed our experience at Olvaquero and we will definitely be going back to visit one day in the hear future. I highly recommend this house for anybody seeking a quiet, relaxing yet fun filled time literally off the beaten path.

Awesome Spot - Great location and owner
We really enjoyed our recent stay at Ola Vaquero. The house is in a great location- very close walk down the beach to the waves at Rio Nexpa. The owner was super responsive and helpful and the onsite caretaker and chef Alejandro is phenomenal. He cooked really good local cuisine for a very reasonable price and is a really great guy. Another bonus was the quiver of boards available which allowed us to not have to lug boards down which made travel much easier. Great bang for your buck here. Again, big thanks to James and Alejandro for helping make our trip so easy and fun.

Exactly as described and Much More!
If you're looking at this home as a possibility for your surf adventure, I have to warn you that this is not a surf trip. Olavaquero is an experience of a lifetime. Please don't do as I did and wait...A trip here will change your life. It seems incomprehensible that there not be waves to surf at the point, if not world-class as mentioned. Being in warm water, amongst old and new friends, with great waves - would have been enough, but to return to the property itself, I can only reiterate everything that has been said in the other reviews. It is masterfully designed and situated, it's so comfortable in the afternoons and at night. You will settle into the rhythms of the area, and it will ruin you for what you thought was a vacation. What I can not express is how wonderful the entire experience is. Watch the Pescadores show you what a fisherman is, by watching the ocean for an hour, then wading casually into 8' liquadora with a hundred pounds of rusty tackle. Then returning to retrieve 5 different species of fish. The best part of Nexpa, however, are the people. You will meet amazing people, in the lineup, on your travels, and most importantly, as your hosts. Manuel and Rebecca and their family are simply wonderful! Your mind will be blown by the food she prepares and by how genuine they are. The home is well appointed with everything you need and the info provided by the owners is just spot-on and the rental process is simple and easy. You will be emotional leaving this place, and you will vow to return, as we will. Thanks so much Pat and Jordan y Muchas, Muchas Gracias Manuel, Rebecca, Yareli y Valeria!

A perfect, relaxing getaway.
I've been to Rio Nexpa several times. Always stayed in the small raised huts at the point. Olavaquero blows the doors off these places for comfort and value while still maintaining the rustic beachfront charm that I love about Rio Nexpa. The pictures do not do this house justice. Everything was neat and clean as promised. Arranging the rental with Pat was a breeze (if you are extra nice to him he may give you the recipe to his "Cowboy Margarita"). The house is majestic. Huge master suites and bathrooms, comfy bunk room, theatre size movie viewing, internet, lots of rental boards, great pool and the best part: the lookout tower to check the surf and watch sunsets. Just steps to the sand and a short walk to the reeling surf at the point, this house stays comfortable during the hot afternoons because the whole front of it is open to the prevailing sea breeze. Perfect. Revecca, the live-in chef, cooked us some of the best Mexican food I've had anywhere. Do yourself a favor and ask her to make her shrimp chile rellenos or barbecue a whole fish. We did both and it was a treat. It was a nice alternatives to the restaurants in town. Great breakfast as well. All in all a wonderful trip for us. We had clean head-high surf all week. It's always a bit of a gamble going anywhere to chase surf, but Olavaquero is a sure bet for a great relaxing time, even is the surf doesn't decide to cooperate.

Born in Alaska, spent time in Minnesota & Washington as a kid, until moving to Sun Valley Idaho as a teenager. Traveling the World throughout high school and college, I fell in love with surfing while living in New Zealand. Chose to put down roots in Northern California and Southern Oregon, until the Mountains of Idaho called me back to raise a family. Now splitting my time between surfing in Mexico, farming in Southern Oregon, and family time in Idaho. A dream of mine is to have great family friendly places to stay along the Mexican/Central America/South American coasts for surfing and playing. I host this along with my wife, Layla. We love to answer any & all questions you may have, so please do not hesitate to reach out.

Why they chose this property

Private beach, expansive views, mango orchard, fresh seafood & fruit galore, world class surfing just a 15min walk away, a river mouth my kid can splash and play in, along with a great local community of families and travelers'.

What makes this property unique

Castillo de Arena is a true standout on the Michoacan coast. Boasting enough space for a retreat or small wedding, we have meticulously remodeled the home to be the best spot for our family and yours.
