Imagine yourself turning down a beautiful country lane, majestic weeping willows as you enter, culminating in a quiet cul-de-sac. You open the gate to the driveway of the white cottage and pull in...the neighbor's curious goats come to the fence to greet you! Ahhhh...the country life! In the greenbelt that bounds the famous Oak Creek, there are grass, flowers, trees...not necessarily what you would expect in the High Desert of AZ! However, though we are only about 20 minutes from West Sedona, it is like we are a million miles away from the sidewalks, crowds and condos there.
Allie's Acre is my home; I share my time between AZ and NM, and so I have decided to open my precious cottage to others when I am away. It is just too wonderful to sit empty when I am enjoying my place in Santa Fe! The love and care my guests have shown for my property have confirmed my decision to rent to vacationers from all over the world.
When I first bought Allie's Acre, we loved the peace and quiet of our country cottage, but went into Sedona or Cottonwood to eat out, shop or visit local attractions/attend local events. Seven years later, this area is dotted with some fabulous new restaurants, quaint local wineries, and its own wonderful nature and cultural places of interest...to the extent that we (and our guests) sometimes find that several days have gone by and we haven't yet visited Sedona!
2013 Update: The Cornville/Verde Valley area was just rated in the top 10 places to visit in the US. Validation! Here's what they had to say: Verde Valley, Arizona
Between Phoenix and the Grand Canyon, the Verde Valley is taking off as Arizona’s go-to destination, and not just among the spa and crystal Sedona-fans of years past. The Verde Valley region is beautiful, with green canyons rimmed by red rocks, and towns like Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona that have long drawn visitors for good food, art and mining lore. But the Verde boost is all about the wine. The new Verde Valley Wine Trail links four new vineyards clustered around Cornville, near Sedona. Most fun is reaching the Alcantara Vineyards… by kayak. Less fun is being the designated kayaker.
Now...back to Allie's Acre: The property feels like your own grassy, tree-filled private park, complete with a charming, comfortable cottage, and famous Oak Creek but a few steps away (the cottage has public access to the creek, if you wish). All the trees keep the property cool...so in the summer, it is much more comfortable here than areas filled with heat-harboring concrete and asphalt.
You open the cottage door and you know that you are 'home'. Blue flowered curtains & pillows, tribal rugs on the floor, and a wood-burning stove beckons from the corner of the sitting room. No gas fireplaces here!! If it is fall or winter, you will find a stocked log rack, so that you can enjoy the warmth of the fire in the cool of the evening. The bathroom is a pleasant surprise...in addition to the stall shower, there is a beautiful black Jacuzzi in the corner of the otherwise simple, lace-curtained lavender room. Perfect to soak in after a long day of hiking!
The tiled kitchen is small but complete...everything about this place, from the rooster plate above the sink to the deer antler in the octagon window, makes you feel at home. The wooden French doors open into a Den/2nd Bedroom...the TV is located behind the closet doors, and the new twin bed offers additional sleeping capacity.
The master bedroom is ample and inviting...a dried wreath over the bed, a quilt to keep you warm. There is also a writing desk in the room, inviting you to document your vacation experiences in your journal...or perhaps complete that writing project you started last year! The sliding glass door leads to to a patio surrounded by trees and flowers...a wonderful place to have a cup of morning coffee! There is a Mexican free-standing river stone fireplace on the patio...another sweet place to spend an evening talking with friends or cuddled up with a special someone. I often love to sit out there alone...warmed by the fire in the chiminea, with a glass of wine and my own thoughts.
The yard is green and has flower beds surrounding the house and patios. I have extra vases in the kitchen, so feel free to enjoy some flowers from the cutting garden while you are there. In the spring there are peaches and apples on the trees!
There are many wonderful experiences to be had in this area of the Verde Valley, which you are much closer to than if you are staying in Sedona: In addition to the local wineries on Page Springs Road (about 5-10 minutes away), Windmill Park, and the great local restaurants 'Up the Creek' and 'Harry's Hideaway', there is a Forest Service Wildlife Viewing Area and a Fish Hatchery nearby, as well.
In nearby Old Town Cottonwood, there are lots of great little stores, restaurants and Wine Tasting venues that don't have the 'cookie cutter' feel like some of the tourist shops in Sedona. The village of Jerome is a 'must see'...an old copper mining town that now houses artists' studios, galleries, restaurants and shops. Camp Verde has some wonderful ruins to explore... Montezuma's Well, Montezuma's Castle, and a little farther out, Tuzigoot. Also, between the cottage and Sedona are Honanki and Palatki, two other beautiful ancient ruins managed by the Forest Service, as well as an incredible hiking experience, Shaman's Cave.
For some night life, Cliff Castle Resort & Casino in Camp Verde (about 15 min. away) has some great restaurants, a bowling alley, and, of course, lots of 'one armed bandits,' if you want to try your luck! The Clarkdale Train offers a sweet ride through the local mountains, with the guide pointing out both historical and natural points of interest...a real treat for train afficionados!
I can help you tailor your experiences to your interests and budgets...just ask! If I don't know the answer to your question, I will be happy to try and get one for you.
Welcome to Garden Lane...and my inviting 'nature retreat' that I love so much!
PLEASE NOTE three important items: I am a medicinal aromatherapist, and I have my own line of pure, Medicinal-grade essences in the home...the vast majority of people (even those who are chemically sensitive) are entranced by and drawn to the completely natural smells that emanate from them (think of slicing an orange or a grapefruit, or the beautiful smell of lavender!). I just want to alert potential guests that I use the essences when I am in the home, and I do have bottles of essences stored there, as well.
Second, the wood-burning stove is the primary heat source for the cottage. It is fully capable of making the entire place toasty!! I do have tower space heaters in both the Master Bedroom and the TV Room/Den/2nd Bedroom, and a 'back up' heater in the Pantry (guests are given full and clear info on how to set this if they choose to use it for heating and/or when they leave the property).
Third, because of the rural nature of the property (there is an old chicken coop and out house at the back of the property, as well as an irrigation ditch on the far right side of the fence line across the pasture), and the fact that I am not 'on site' when my cottage is rented, I was advised by my my insurance company to accept only adults and older teens as renters. My Santa Fe casita (VRBO 328669) is family-friendly, but unfortunately, I am not able to offer that at the Cottage.

Wine-tasting at several local Page Springs wineries; there is also a Forest Service fish hatchery about 10 minutes away on Page Springs Road. There are many Indian ruins and Forest Service-staffed sites within 20 minutes.
