Apartment Olive is a small, cozy garden apartment, opening into the courtyard of a landmark building in the very heart of Budapest: the geographic fulcrum of the Belvaros (the historic inner semi circle around the Danube) is Ferenciek Square, and Apartment Olive’s building fronts directly onto that square. It’s one of the city’s oldest residential buildings (the building is a bit tattered), sitting directly across from Budapest City Hall.

The courtyard is lovely, lush, and green, extremely unusual for Budapest, with shrubbery and wildflowers and trees growing wilily nilly. Olive opens off the courtyard and so it is quiet and restful even though it is in the dead center of a historic world capital city.

Our favorite pastry shop (August Cukraszda -- 'cukraszda' means 'confectionery' ... 'cukor' is 'sugar' ... Hungarian is less difficult than you thought!) is just around the corner from the Ferenciek side of the building; our favorite café is a block away from the City Hall (Varoshaz) side of the building. The Astoria stop of the Red metro is a block from the Varoshaz side, the Ferenciek stop on the Blue metro is just outside the Ferenciek side.

If you exit the Varoshaz side you are across the street from one of the few international newsstands in the city, and that café a block away is the Gerloczy, one of the nicest places for a comfortable meal, coffee, beer, lemonade, or simply a rest in the city center.

The Danube is just a couple of blocks’ walk, the pedestrianized Vaci utca is one block away, the Central Market Hall and Vorosmarty Square are each about 5-10 minutes away depending on how fast you stroll. The Great Synagogue is 2-3 blocks away, the Basilca about 6-8. You can catch a bus into Buda (or the Red Metro) just outside the door.

The apartment itself is ideal for 1-3 people (4 if you are two couples).

We have renovated it to capture the feel of an upscale fin de siecle Hungarian garden apartment, with vaulted ceilings and antiques and traditional artisanal pieces throughout. There’s a queen sized bed in the bedroom, a custom shower in the heated tile bathroom (with a converted antique bentwood chamberpot stand as the sink). The bedroom has a (gated and curtained) double door opening directly onto the courtyard for cool summer light, just beside a lovely small antique wardrobe for your clothes.

You enter from the courtyard directly into the livingroom, which has a kitchenette with induction cooktop, fridge, microwave, and clothes washer; a bay window and window seat adjacent to the dining table, a queen convertible sofa (not a folding mattress but a comfortable solid queen), a large flatpanel TV, high speed WiFi internet, free Nespresso coffee system and coffee, free international VOIP outbound calling (and an inbound US telephone number for low-cost incoming calls from the USA).

Olive is two blocks south of our Szervita ter apartment (VRBO #124227) and 2 blocks north of our Apartment Max (VRBO #151479).

If you know Budapest perhaps you have a sense of the ways in which the neighborhood is difficult to describe...while the building that houses Olive is a landmark in the midst of the bustling center city, the apartment is quiet, and one has the feeling of getting away from it all when one is inside (the doors to the courtyard from the street are locked to outsiders after dark).

Yet when you walk out into the street you are within striking distance of almost all major tourist venues. And, less obviously, you are also in a thriving small residential neighborhood -- there are several supermarkets nearby, a laundry across the street, a pharmacy nearby, many neighborhood cafes, and a movie house around the corner.

About John Farago

John's father grew up in Budapest, and John grew up hearing about it, filtered through the oddly appealing love/hate lens of nazism and communism and Central European nostalgia. His father left in the mid-30s, and never went back until a 1975 week-long visit. But Hungary lived within him throughout his colorful career as a journalist, popular historian (author of the books that the films Patton and Tora, Tora, Tora were based on), propagandist and operative for Radio Free Europe. He died in 1980.

John Farago purchased this apartment in 2008

Why John Farago chose Inner City

My wife Jeanne and I visited in 2001 with my father's younger brother, spent a weekend and fell in love with it. We purchased and renovated these apartments for our own use (Belle and Sarah are our daughters, Max is our son, Olive and Andrei are our grandchildren) and only rent them when we are not using them ourselves for friends and family (we have another apartment where we stay ourselves, not very far away).

What makes this apartment unique

We are passionate about Budapest and want to share that enthusiasm with our guests. We would be happy to assist in any way we can to help you have a wonderful trip whether you stay with us or elsewhere. Unless you speak Hungarian, booking tickets to concerts or events can be daunting, and are best handled in advance because so much sells out so swiftly...we are happy to take care of this kind of thing, advise about the city, or book a reservation in a restaurant for the day you arrive (though you may be weary by then).

Lovely spot in centre of town.

  • 5 of 5

From our pickup at the airport and delivery to the apartment in the early morning hours, everything went perfectly.

John has the apartment set up with everything we needed, including a great, sensible written guide to the city with the useful information that makes the trip stress free.

The restaurant guide was much appreciated with a short walk to Gerloczy restaurant for fantastic dinner and lunch.

Morning Nespresso coffees, fresh bread, cheese and wine got us started on arrival.

Budapest is a very walkable city and we were able to keep ourselves busy exploring the area, from our front door, for four days and still have not exhausted the things to see and do.

I would recommend the Apartment Olive highly and put it first on our list if we get back to Budapest.

Great little apartment

  • 5 of 5

On arrival we found Apartment Olive to be a small comfortable well equipped apartment with good security. There was a welcoming small supply of provisions in the fridge which was greatly appreciated. You will even find a spa bag with towels for a relaxing day at the hot-spring baths. Wi-fi, a computer, phones and power adaptors were available and John had provided a folder which contained a wealth of information for getting around Budapest.

The location of the apartment is great. We used public transport only twice during our week in Budapest. Turn R) and walk a few metres to the main road, turn R) cross the road at the pedestrian lights there is a supermarket and a large bakery next door. Turn L) out the door and a few metres down is a supermarket, turn L) again and walking down towards the river you will find a street full of restaurants and fashion shops.

There are so many interesting places within easy walking distance of Apartment Olive, such as the Market Hall and Parliament House, as well walking over the bridges to Gellert Baths and Buda Castle. There are excellent views of the city from Buda castle and the museum is certainly worth a visit.

I have no hesitation in recommending Apartment Olive as a comfortable place to stay, in an easy location for getting around Budapest.

Many thanks John, we enjoyed our stay in Apartment Olive and had a great holiday in Budapest.

Compact, but Comfortable and Close to the Best of Budapest

  • 5 of 5

Apt. Olive is a compact yet functional home base from which to explore all that the beautiful city of Budapest has to offer. The owners were quick to respond and provide valuable information before and during our stay. They even stocked the pantry and refrigerator with basic foods to get us started as well as some goodies and a bottle of wine to welcome us to their city. The bathroom was also stocked with items that might be needed in a pinch and the computer was helpful as well. The owners arranged our transfer from the airport (much appreciated) and had someone meet us at the apartment to overview the amenities and the check out process. As we were settling in, the owners followed up with a telephone call. They truly care about their renters.

The apartment was relatively quiet other than an occasional dog barking in the courtyard, the bed was comfortable, and the spacious shower (not typical in Europe) was much appreciated as well as the washing machine and microwave. We really enjoyed the Nepresso machine each morning. Location is key and Apt. Olive's is ideal, being within a short walk to Vaci Street, the Danube Promenade, metro stops/buses, the Great Market Hall and the Elizabeth and Chain Bridges. We couldn't have asked for more.

Realize that the kitchen is tiny, but there are small tables nearby to extend the counter space. The bathroom also lacks counter space, but the wall-hung cabinet can be used instead. The lighting is very good throughout. Overall we were quite pleased with our stay at Apt. Olive.

Elegant and spacious

  • 5 of 5

The whole experience was enjoyable from the driver awaiting us at the airport, the welcoming lady meeting us at the apartment and John even calling us during our visit to make sure everything was okay. John sent us lots of information before our visit telling us why he loves Budapest, restaurants he recommended and areas to tour.

Apartment Max was ideal for exploring Budapest. It is right in the middle of the action, just steps from the market, restaurants and shopping area and within walking distance of the castle, parliament and all attractions.

The apartment itself is very spacious and well appointed. It had everything you could ask for. John has every guidebook of Budapest and Hungary, every charger necessary and a computer and printer to print out tour information or boarding passes. The renovated kitchen has a dishwasher and a nespresso machine with capsules. The fridge was stocked with cheeses, salamis, delicious pastries and bread and milk. There was also a bottle of wine awaiting us.

The bathroom had an enormous shower well stocked with hair products, razors and artisan soaps.

The living room, with it's high ceiling and refined furnishings was both elegant and comfortable, with lounging and dining areas. It was a wonderful place to lounge in the morning before heading out, and a welcome place to return in the evening. A small balcony overlooking the pedestrian street and the leafy park across the street was a great place to enjoy a morning coffee.

We would heartily recommend (and have) this apartment to our friends and family. 2 thumbs up.

Charming small apartment with great location, fully furnished, and every possible amenity

  • 5 of 5

Apartment Olive is a small and charming apartment conveniently located on Ferenciak tere. It is an easy walk or metro to all the great sites in Pest (Andrassy Avenue, Varosloget Central Park, the Jewish District--and so much more. Lots of great restaurants near by and even a great jazz club (Cafe If) about 20 minutes away. What made the experience of staying at the Apartment Olive so sppecial, though, is the hospitality and graciousness of its owner/host, John Farago. He answered every question over internet, gave us loads of great advice, and checked in to see if everything was okay. His apartments are set up as though they were furnished for his friends. Beautiful furniture, great views, a range of books on Budapest, well set up kitchen (including a Nespress machine), and a washing machiner. The apartment was on the inside of a central court. There were grocery stores within a couple of minutes walk and a ten minute walk or so to the Central Market. We actually never drove anywhere: we either walked or took the metro. However, John provides a free VSOP phone in the flat and a cell phone which you repay the minutes, so it is easy to call a cab. Apartment Olive contains a living/dining room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a full f bath. It was ideal for two people. I know John has other flats that are larger and some are larger. I would happily stay in any of his apartments.

Fabulous stay in Apartment Olive

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Apartment Olive for 8 days from 30 December 2015.

There is so much to love about this apartment. The apartment is on the ground floor in a historic building with an interior courtyard. There is lift access for apartments on upper floors.

The apartment is tastefully furnished with antiques. It is charming, cozy, quiet and comfortable.

The shower was huge with a proper shower head not the hand held shower nozzles you see everywhere else in Europe.

There were bound notes on every aspect of not only the apartment but also every conceivable question you may have when you are in Budapest from medical services to ATMs to dining suggestions and shopping.

Our every need was taken into account - there were guidebooks galore; cook books; books about Hungary and other reading material. There was a washing machine; computer with internet access; hair dryer; various toiletries in the bathroom; towels if we had wanted to avail ourselves of the various thermal spas, all ready to go in a beach bag.

There was a Nespresso machine with coffee pods, tea bags; dishwashing liquid; laundry liquid; mobile phone; local landline with free calls to the US and various other countries.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the property manager who provided explanations regarding the apartment.

To our delight, the fridge had been stocked with fresh smallgoods, butter, milk, pastries and cheese; a loaf of bread was on the counter and a bottle of wine on the shelf.

The location is superb on Varoshaz Utca, close to transport links, restaurants, supermarkets and the shopping in Vorosmarty Square. It was within walking distance of the Jewish Quarter, the Great Hall markets, the Erszebet Bridge. It was close enough to the tourist hub to access the various restaurants and sites yet far enough away to feel like you were part of everyday life in Budapest.

Even when just making enquiries, John the owner, replied within hours to any enquiries we had about the apartment and Budapest itself.

John was available at any time throughout our stay to answer any questions we had.

Apartment Olive was also unbeatable value.

We loved our stay in Budapest and Apartment Olive so much that we are already planning our next visit. Hopefully the secret of how great this apartment is won't get out and it will still be available for our next visit.
