About this property

Makarora River Ranch Lodge

The Lodge here at Makarora River Ranch was originally built as accommodation for sheep shearing crews in the early 1900's. It is now fully modernised and offers ideal accommodation for families and groups. Enjoy the comfortable surroundings after a day's fishing or hunting or simply relax and soak up the view from the deck which runs the length of the building.

No children under 8 years old please.

Bring along your own food to be prepared in the fully equipped kitchen. Other food options include a cafe just a few minutes drive towards Wanaka and another bar/cafe/restaurant a few minutes drive towards Haast.
Please note that the closest supermarket is located at Wanaka so we do recommend stocking up on whatever you may need before your arrival in Makarora.

For those after adventure, we are only minutes away from jet boat, helicopter and plane rides.
Explore the area on foot, try your hand at trout fishing or visit the nearby Blue Pools.

Our location means you could comfortably take a day trip through to the West Coast or visit Wanaka in the other direction.

Great location
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Makarora lodge. A great location within easy reach of Wanaka and Haast and the whole area in between. The lodge is well set up and comfortable and the verandah is a lovely place to sit and soak up the sun and the views. Eileen was great to communicate with. We would love to stay again on our next trip to NZ.

Beautiful country lodge
This property has been beautifully renovated and is very well appointed inside. Lovely quiet and scenic location. I had a great nights sleep here. Clarification about which of three gravel roads to take once turned in off the road could be better.

Nearest to Haast
This was a superb location and accommodation for our trip. Check in process was handled well given covid restrictions and policies. The rooms are ample and the photos barely do it justice. The farm/ range is incredible, the views from the deck as you sip a wine with your cheese and crackers is sublime. We wish we had more time to spend here. Well worth checking in to.

What makes this property unique

At certain times of the year we have orphaned lambs and calves near the accommodation which are bottle fed and very tame. We have over-friendly ducks and chickens who like to visit guests.
Your welcoming party is likely to consist of floppy-eared dogs, a pet deer and a curious Burmese cat.
