An Eco-Vacation Rental in the Forest up in the Trees...

Are there still some adventurous, Huck Finn type sparks alive in you? Then turn up your Jurassic Big Island experience another notch by staying in this unique, hand-made, GENUINE treehouse built 20 ft. up into 5 living, native Hawaiian ohia trees.

Look down onto the reaching fronds of amazing hapu'us (giant tree ferns) from huge windows and lanais all around, providing 360-degree birds-eye views of this secure, private 4 acre paradise. Witness the thrills of nature's interactions while nestled in homey comforts, including full-kitchen and bath, TV/DVD, music and more to modernize your Swiss Family Robinson experience.

Fall asleep while star-viewing from your comfy bed perched high up in the spacious loft. Some nights, even the volcano's red glow is visible.

A real-deal treehouse... located between two active volcanic vents... in Hawaii... you might never want to leave! But Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the charming artist colony of Volcano Village are nearby if you do.

Huck Finn says: For the creative, environmentally sensitive types, not the fussy. This truly 'green' structure was intentionally built in the most non-invasive manner, using high grade building wood and reconditioned windows, doors, and most everything else (including the 'kitchen sink!') And after 6 years of testing by various forces of nature, it's structural integrity has been proven to be sound and solid. And the trees are happy, too.

About Skye Peterson

Skye is a master treehouse builder in Hawaii. He lives on property adjacent to this genuine (full house in the trees) TreeHouse. Years of effort, energy and artistry went into the design and construction of each unique treehouse.

He comes from the east coast, Pa. Md and N.J. and traveled thru out the US for many years and eventually landed in Hawaii in 1980. Which was home base for years of international travels until settling down in Volcano Village in the late 80's and starting his new enthusiasm of TreeHouse building out of recycled materials creating his beautiful master pieces, which became his future homes.

One never knows where they will end up if they just follow your hearts is a life lesson he learned and lived.

Skye Peterson purchased this cabin in 1989

Why Skye Peterson chose Royal Hawaiian Estates

I'm now sharing what was my private home on secluded 4 acres of Hawaiian rainforest for many years, with others that have been bitten by the TreeHouse bug like I was.

What makes this cabin unique

- A genuine treehouse (take sleeping in a real TreeHouse it off your bucket list!!)

- Right down the road from the craters and red hot lava in Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park -- active with lava flows since 1983.

- Comfortably living in the treetops of Hawaiian Rainforest with dry, warm indoor viewing thru giant windows and outdoor decks at the same level weaving 80 feet out thru the existing trees.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I don't know how many other vacation rental owners meet and greet their guests but I do, it's fun. I so appreciate meeting the kindred spirits who seek out TreeHouses to stay in. I have enjoyed many great conversations and count most of my past guests as my friends now. I delight in telling my new guests about the gathering of the recycled materials and the building of my TreeHouses ( which took 6 years) as well as all the wonderful places to visit and things to experience and hikes to take around the Volcano area, inside the National Park, in Volcano Village, and in Pahoa area near by and other unique places on the Big Island. TreeHouse enthusiasts are my favorite people and an all around good lot.

Incredible experience, wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

Skye's treehouse is incredible. It combines impressive sustainable engineering with a wonderful eye for artistry and whimsey. It is nestled among lush vegetation, so inside or outside, it is a true feast for the eyes. The kitchen is beautiful and well stocked. The main bedroom is like something from Swiss Robinson, while there are lots of other sleeping options. We had two families of three stay there, and we were very comfortable. The air circulated at night perfectly, keeping us cool and refreshed without need for air conditioning. And we had a great dinner down the road at the edge of the national park. We could have happily stayed there much longer. It was perfect.

I was sad to learn that so many folks have found the recent uptick in volcanic activity a reason to cancel their stays on the big island. We were right on the edge of the park in this treehouse, and we were as safe and comfortable as could be. The air was bright and clear, the roads and stores were filled with relaxed people going about their business, and we even got to drive through the park to a hiking area on the one-third of it that remains open. We learned that one of the big reasons the park is closed is that so many water lines have sustained damage, thus making it hard for the park to adequately host the typical crowds. The closures turned out to have very little to do with actual threats from lava or ash, or even from significant earthquakes. We ended up having to travel 70 miles by boat from Hilo (which is already about 25 miles from the treehouse) just to try to glimpse lava. We are so glad we went, and we felt safe and comfortable throughout.

This treehouse is a real opportunity to enjoy nature in true style. Highly, highly recommended.

Safe, fun, comfy tree house

  • 5 of 5

Amazing! We have never stayed in a tree house and for the first time, this was absolutely incredible! Skye left no detail to chance when he made this tree house in a rain forest on the side of a volcano.

Never had a problem with lava and air quality. Easily sleeps 4 and probably up to 6.

If we ever make it back to Hawaii, we will certainly stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks Cesar, you have a wonderful family, take care of your self and get better. The guests that believed me when I said it wasn't dangerous and came have had a great time here, not only is the air good and the Volcano interesting but there are many other things to do here besides the Park and no place is crowded either.

Great and very unique place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the treehouse for 2 nights because it looked so cool and different. We didn’t regret it. It was a really neat experience and a very impressive place that Skye had built. We were not affected by the volcano other than not being able to tour the park (since it was closed) but we just decided to check out the downtown area instead which was really cute - good restaurants and boutique shops. We discovered that the news of the volcano may be being exaggerated - we felt very safe during our stay and were not the only vacationers that we saw around. A side note - this treehouse is not just for kids! Its a fully functioning house with shower, toilet, and full kitchen. Would recommend!!

Amazing experience!!!

  • 5 of 5

It is an amazing experience in Skye's treehouse. I arrived treehouse at 6th May, just few days after eruption and earthquake in Big Island. But treehouse does not have any influence at all!!!! The air is good and no any ash. You don't need to worry about it. Though the park was partially close when I arrived, treehouse itself is a fabulous place to visit and stay. Skye will give you very helpful tour guide. Highly recommend for couple and family trip.

Owner's Response: I love that there are people that think of it more as an adventure. If it was really bad they would evacuate the area.

Tropical Forest Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

A dream come true! The trees come up from the floors and through the roof but the space is not drafty, although you can open up the doors for a nice cool mountain breezeway. Enormous windows provide an unadulterated view of the native ferns and the ohia trees. The volcano is active, as she has been for several decades, but we feel safe and secure next to the wood stove as well as in the fully outfitted kitchen. The property is clean and full of thoughtful, artistic, and comforting touches.

The owner is incredibly friendly and easy to get in touch with. It's clear that he wants his guests to enjoy themselves and have a relaxing time.

The national park was closed during our stay, but we enjoyed the feeling of being deep in the forest with no one around (yet just a couple of miles from the market and restaurants). It is also about a 4 mile drive from the local winery!

There was a cancellation, presumably because of the recent eruption (which is far away from here, btw), so we ended up going to the store for more provisions and staying an extra night! Clearly, I can think of nothing to complain about. :)

Owner's Response: Aloha, Thank you for pointing out that the TreeHouses are in a safe place out of range of the lava and with a stronge Kona wind the air here is always clean. The folks that cancelled today missed a beautiful day here in Volcano and now evening with no negative signs from the Volcano here. In Kona, I hear it was terribly voggy, for those who cancel and go to Kona to escape are actually driving into the vog.

Amazing Treehouse, Exciting visit!

  • 5 of 5

Skye's treehouse was just amazing - the pictures can't capture how cool this place is! We were initially just amazed that Skye was able to build such a large, comfortable house in the trees, but over the next few days, also really began to appreciate all of the artistic details. The treehouse is uniquely located close to all of the exciting volcanic activity, but with the security of being in the Volcano Village area, which, despite it's name, has not been impacted by the recent eruptions. Perfect launching point for some great adventures! We especially enjoyed our helicopter tour, which gave a a great sense of the geography of the volcanic activity in the area. Volcano Village has some exceptional restaurants, most notable was Ohelo Cafe.

Owner's Response: I love that review, those folks were very cool like alot of my guests are. They came when the news was saying crazy things that they obviously didn't believe and they had a great time un affected by the activity except they couldn't go in the park, but there are lots of other things going on around Hilo and the rest of the Big Island, Volcano related or just tropicalness in every direction. The Treehouse is near the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, where you can view the glowing crater, it's about 12 minutes away. Also Kalapana, where the lava has been entering the ocean is a 50 minute drive. Hilo is where all the water sports are also the movies and museums and is about 30 minutes away. Another fun event is exploring old lava tubes, with a guide if you like.
