About the property

La Lomita is located in the area where La Familia Valdez has a 300 year history. La Lomita was conceived, designed and built with hospitality and spirituality in mind. It is a place of healing and rest, of relaxing and dreaming, of renewal. It holds mystery in the howling coyotes, the whispering junipers, the shifting arroyos, and the colorful wildlife. Bienvenidos! Nuestra casa es su casa.

Read our wonderful reviews and let our many guests describe the La Lomita experience. (See review section)

Nestled into the Black Mesa, La Lomita is the hub surrounded by Abiquiu to the northwest, Ojo Caliente and Taos to the north, Chimayo to the east, and Española and Santa Fe to the south, all with local art and food just 10 to 55 minutes away. It is 12 miles from the relaxing mineral springs and spa at Ojo Caliente, and 30 minutes from Los Alamos and Bandalier National Monument.

The spectacular Santa Fe Opera is 30 minutes away, as is its neighbor, the Santa Fe Flea Market with treasures made by 'artesanos' from Mexico, Guatemala and other native areas (open in Spring and Summer).

On the way to Taos, via the High Road through Truchas or the route along the Rio Grande through Velarde with the Black Mesa Winery, you will find beautiful scenery and native Hispano-made tin work, retablos, santos, and weaving from traditions begun hundreds of years ago.

River rafting in the Rio Grande or floating over the river gorge in a hot air balloon, are adventures waiting for all ages, as are the ski trails and golf courses, all in close proximity to La Lomita.

Stay at home and climb the Black Mesa, part of our 9 acre 'back yard', and if you reach the top (about 45 minutes of spectacular climbing), wander across the top of the Mesa and see the Rio Grande flowing below. Or grab your easel and paints, camera or writing pad, and capture the breath-taking, mountain scenes all around you. Need to relax? Try tai-ch, yoga or gentle walking around our juniper, piñon and desert-flowered landscape, and let the many visiting songbirds lull you into a peaceful siesta.

Keywords: On 9 acres, solar adobe home with covered portal (porch) facing the Jemez mountains, designed with quiet and the spiritual in mind. The terrain, including the mesa high above the house, suggests privacy. ¡Se habla español!

About Carl and Gretchen Valdez

Carl Valdez is a native of the Finger Lakes area of New York State and Gretchen is a native of Minneapolis, MN where they live and have raised 8 daughters, 8 grandchildren and a great-grand daughter. Carl is a veteran of the US Air Force of the Viet Nam era. Both are retired teachers, but Carl works full-time as an ordained deacon in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Su ministerio es primeramente con los de habla hispana.

Carl is named after his paternal grandfather, Carlos Borromeo Valdez. His father's ancestors originally settled in Abiquiu, NM in the early 1800's, then in Los Valdeses, Colorado (now Seven Mile Plaza) between Del Norte and Monte Vista in the San Luis Valley. The church there, San Francisco de Asís, was founded by Juan Pio Valdez, Carl's great (5 times)-grandfather who was raised in Abiquiu. The land on which the church sits is called La Loma (the Hill) near the Rio Grande; thus the name for our home, La Lomita. Our home is situated 100 miles south, also very near the Rio Grande.

Some of his aunts, uncles and cousins eventually moved back to Española, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and it is primarily in Monte Vista and this area that he and Gretchen began regular visits more than 30 years ago.

Carl and Gretchen Valdez purchased this house in 1999

Why Carl and Gretchen Valdez chose Ojo Caliente

In addition to the above family reasons, we became enchanted with the beauty of northern New Mexico, hearing the language of Carl's father, the music, the restaurants with authentic northern New Mexican food, and even watching the hummingbirds.

What makes this house unique

We love the excitement of watching our grandchildren start 'the climb' to the top of the mesa (five have made it with a lot of help from grandpa) or climb on the surrounding rock structures, watch hummingbirds dive and look forward every day to a new adventure - just minutes away.

We are delighted that there is something to do year around. In some months, it's possible to ski in the morning (Taos) and golf in the afternoon (Albuquerque).

We are also pleased to have a modest collection of reading material including New Mexico history and New Mexican authors, mysteries, nature, and spiritual topics. A number of visitors have commented that they have enjoyed reading on the portal (porch) without interruption (other than hummingbirds), and others have enjoyed adding to our growing collection.

La Lomita is heated by a clean-burning propane fireplace controlled by thermostat. An electric base board heater is in each bedroom. Of course, the floors and adobe walls via the south-facing Trombe window panels cooperate with the sun. In the summer, the adobe walls, with the help of ceiling fans and use of window blinds, allow the house to maintain comfortable temperature naturally. The well, which is more than 400 feet deep, provides clear, crisp water. Everything is on one floor, including the two bathrooms, one with a shower-tub combination and one with shower and laundry with a washer, dryer and utility sink. The portal (porch) is a favorite spot for lunch and watching the sun set.

Excellent location at this clean and comfy house

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was thoroughly enjoyable. The house is clean, comfortable, well-equipped, quiet, and centrally located for our stay. Bed was very comfy and all the linens and dishes were very clean. The location is open, quiet and peaceful. We visited Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos and the Valles Caldera and all were an easy drive from this location. Carl and family were so helpful and accommodating and the onsite property manager, Jan, could not have been more helpful and friendly. This is one of the best of the two dozen VRBO Rentals we have stayed in and we highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that the Haynes enjoyed both the house and location in order to move around in this beautiful part of northern New Mexico. They were an added bonus for us with their good-humored responses to the shower breaking down and the stove that, for a moment, didn’t kick in. Both were easy fixes (Bob hooked up the replacement shower despite our manager’s insistence that she would take care of it). They also assisted our daughter one evening in the neighboring casita. The Haynes were more like neighbors than house guests. My only regret is that I met them only by phone, rather than in person. They will always be welcome.

La Lomita was very well equipped- spacious and quiet. Scenery was worth a thousand pictures.

Stores were not far away, and local restaurants were very much northern NM flavor. Service very much “estás en tu casa”.

The Solitude of the High Desert!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at La Lomita on the last weekend of October 2017. It is the perfect restful place to stay and was very comfortable and well appointed with everything I needed! All of my needs were taken care of. It is a good place to retreat from the craziness and activity of the world. It is a place of silence. There is no noise! I know that I will return to this home again because it was such a place of solitude and silence and spirituality! Due to its location , getting a Wifi signal is problematic and if you can handle this and know this, you will be able to detach from the rush of media and enjoy your stay in quietness! Highly recommended! Carl and Gretchen and Jan are very responsive, flexible, kind and caring and helped to make my stay enjoyable and refreshing!

Owner's Response: Cece named our priorities as we were designing the house - solitude and spirituality. Nature takes care of the rest. Of course, we have wonderful guests! Thank you, Cece for choosing La Lomita. We look forward to your return.

Beautiful Sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

La Lomita is a very special place. The views from the covered deck were stunning with clouds, sunshine, rainbows and starry nights. I loved the hummingbirds and their funny antics! The home is cozy and well stocked with everything you might need; and is beautifully constructed to provide a nurturing retreat away from it all. It's a short drive to the Mineral Springs, Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch, Bandelier, Puye Cliff Dwelllings, Taos and more! I was filled to the brim and re-energized after my stay in this amazing place. I am excited to be going back in the Spring :) Thank you Gretchen and Carl for your thoughtful care in making this experience available.

Owner's Response: Emilee, a simple response: yes, we work at making La Lomita a calm, relaxing, spiritually healing respite, but it is our guests who insure that it happens. We look forward to your return.

Great place for 2-4 persons!!

  • 5 of 5

Very serene and quiet. Nice inside and great for sitting outside on the porch. Don't like having to open and close the gate, but a necessary evil, I suppose!! The serenity is worth it!!

One day isn't enough to spend in beautiful, historic Santa Fe, the highest capitol in the United States. Visit museums, 300 year-old churches, the town square with native artisans selling their wares and, of course, Santa Fe's wonderful restaurants. 6 snow skiing areas are 36 to 94 miles away. The 8 golf courses are 15 to 40 miles away.
