About this property

Jaw-Dropping Coastal Mountain & Ocean View Post & Beam Log Getaway

If you are looking for absolutely stunning views and a unique setting enjoyed in complete privacy five to eight minutes drive from two quaint harbor towns, then this vacation getaway is for you. No pet fees, no cleaning fees, no extra person fees. Perched high on a mountainside, this house is of Log/Post and Beam construction with a very, very open floor plan (please read the description carefully to make sure it’s a goof fit), large wrap-around porch, lofts, cathedral ceiling, and with windows and skylights on all sides to let in the truly magnificent, commanding vistas.

The house is a ski-lodge-style Post and Beam log house. It has a very open floor plan with visual privacy or potential visual privacy for the sleeping arrangements but no auditory privacy to speak of except in the downstairs powder room. With groups larger than one couple that needs to be considered, but those who book after my "open floor plan speech" reminder tend to have a wonderful time. Also note: it has a spiral staircase and fairly steep entry way stairs. It is not built to be accessible but we have hosted unusually fit people in their nineties. Use your judgement.

The house sleeps up to eight people in two open loft bedrooms and a cozy, visually private guestroom/library on two Queen sized beds, one Queen sofa bed and one full-sized futon pullout sofa, all very comfortable. There is a whirlpool tub and a stand-up shower, plus a half bath with sunken vessel sink. A country kitchen including a classic cast iron/enameled cook stove, gas range, and slate counter tops with silvan views from the sink. Elegant décor throughout. This house is intimate and romantic, while nature on all sides brings the outside in.

Our View and our Unique Setting:: Forests below you and blueberry fields above, you look down over the lush treetops or pick your own blueberries in season above the house. All neighbors are acres away and almost completely invisible. You will have to crick your neck to see the rooftop of one of them behind you from the wide porch, and then you will only see a part of a roof. You may see bald eagles and hawks soar below you! The peace and quiet and privacy here will amaze you, and there is virtually no traffic near us as we are situated at the turnaround of a small paved road high on the slope, and at the end of a long, steep private drive. A discretely used, only occasionally occupied second building on the property is tucked away out of sight, you won't even know that it is there. On the surrounding mountains to the Ocean, on all sides you will see nothing but forests and meadows dotted by a few fine houses in the distance with their cheerful lights at night. You see dozens of the islands on the Ocean, with Cadillac Mountain in the distance on Mt. Desert Island in Acadia National Park 43 miles away, half that as the crow flies.

Sea, Sky, Mountains, the Area:: The sunrise—if you are up for it—will sparkle on the water and sunsets will turn it a deep pink and the surrounding coastal mountains rose or gold. The area provides infinite possibility for the Nature lover, sailor, historian, art aficionado, birdwatcher or stargazer. For those who long for the water there are day sails, bareboat charters (better be an experienced skipper), lighthouse trips, lobster fishing cruises and eco-tours, lobster-bakes on islands, ferries, whale-watching, kayak and rafting trips, and three to six day nautical adventures on the classic tall ships and wooden schooners known locally and historically as Windjammers. For landlubbers there are hiking trails, starting right outside your door, all over Camden Hills State Park and beyond, as well as on breathtakingly beautiful trails known only to locals, which we will share with you when you come. If you are a bird lover, you will have an overwhelming chorus of birdsong right up at the house. The night sky is amazing.

Dining, Art, Life-style:: There is world-class cuisine and all manner of dining experiences, from waterfront fish-shacks to French to be had in the area, as well as the Farnsworth Art Museum, home of the Wyeth collection, and historic old harbors and quaint, busy waterfronts everywhere, filled with fishing vessels, luxury yachts from all over the world, and classic wooden sailboats. The house is equipped with wireless access and cable. Outdoor equipment includes Adirondack chairs and barbecue grill; well-behaved pets allowed upon approval. Children always welcome, although the house is not specifically "childproofed"; also some care must be taken with the spiral staircase as well as the antiques, art and cultural objects, as many are fragile. Please take care of wicker furniture as well thanks.

Free Wifi (fast and ready for work from home!)
Air Conditioner (large “potable” unit with windows vent. Only needed occasionally in Maine but recent years especially summer 2018 changed things; normally (and famously!) the summer temps are mid-to upper 70’s to low 80’s....and comparatively dry air. There were some hot muggy days this year...so that option will is available to our summer and early fall guests!). We also have fans in every room and a large ceiling fan that operates from the wall between the lofts. The wood beams are made of hickory which can emit a woodsy, musky smell on humid summer days if you close all windows, that may be a new experience, like being in a forest. You will generally feel connected to nature in this place!!

Due to the coronavirus, we’re taking extra care to disinfect frequently touched surfaces between reservations

The perfect northern getaway!!
This home was even better than the pictures! The space is so cozy and decorated beautifully. The hosts left a huge bouquet of fresh flowers for us along with bread, chocolates, and jams. Checking in and out was super easy and the home had all the accommodations you could need. Definitely will be back!

Wonderful stay in an eclectic house with lovely views
This is such a lovely property! The house is open plan, so there's not a lot of privacy, but we're a close family, so it didn't matter. The space is comfortable, the kitchen is extremely well-stocked, and the hosts were so kind to provide some staples like milk and creamer, as well as tea and cookies. And the flowers on the table were beautiful. The location was perfect for us - close to hiking trails and beaches, and not too far from Portland and Acadia National Park (1.5 to 2 hours each). The house is tucked away up in the mountain with lovely views, including of the stars on a clear night. You can sit out on the balcony enjoying the view and local birds visiting the feeder, or if it's chilly, the wood-burning stove warms the living room perfectly. It was such a treat to be able to stay there. Thank you, Melody and Michael!

Romantic Maine getaway
Outstanding, responsive and communicative hosts, breathtaking unique home, great location. So much to do within minutes. Best welcome goodies ever: dozen farm fresh eggs, blackberries, blueberries, milk, almond milk, half and half, OJ, loaf of artisanal bread, jams, cookies (including gluten free!), honey, maple syrup…likely forgot something…it was all wonderful. Very high quality ‘usuals’ as well: soaps, shampoo and conditioner, paper towels, plentiful towels and linens. Excellent use of space in this open plan home with numerous cozy sitting areas. Wide variety of books and magazines, gorgeous flowers and plants, interesting antiques and trinkets from world travels. Plenty of empty drawers and closet space for unpacking. The views are spectacular even though ‘ocean view’ is a stretch. On a clear day you can see Penobscot Bay very much in the distance from certain vantage points. Heed the extremely accurate description: there is no auditory privacy: bathroom, snoring, cooking, etc. all very audible everywhere. The driveway and steps are steep. None of these facts bothered us (just two of us celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary with our 2 well-behaved CKCS). We highly recommend this gem in midcoast Maine and thank Melody and Michael for sharing their beautiful home with us.

Why they chose this property

This was our dream house. We knew the man who built it, a friend of ours, Cpt. Rick Miles, former Master of the Pilot Schooner Timberwind out of Rockport Harbor at the time, now Master of the Wanderbird, who built it with his own hands. Its Post & Beam log components are from a kit shipped from Canada, but many of the features are hand-finished by Rick and his wife Karen, some by us. It is minutes from all the activities of the mid coast, but set apart, with a sense of remoteness and freedom from the bustle of the world, sweeping views and with an immense sense of privacy, completely surrounded by nature. The setting is unique, on a steep hill with a very dramatic drop, Mountains & Sea

What makes this property unique

We love renting our house in part because it has become a resounding success as a business, in part because it is a personal pleasure to us to share it with others. The place is that unique! Having the opportunity to give others the experience of it is very satisfying. The house has a tendency to select its own guests, people for whom it is a perfect fit. It has elements of a Swiss Chalet and a Maine cottage, an Adirondack camp or a Maine summer retreat that might appeal to one of the old families that summer here. It in fact has some appointments that belonged to such a family, my own, At the same time it is decidedly rustic in all the right ways, with a unique air of authenticity and charm, something very hard to find. If you add to all of that the breathtaking way the outside breaks into the house, the way the views pervade every room, the light of dawn or dusk transform the place in new ways each day and each hour, then you have a place unlike any other, a sort of gem that in this day and age is increasingly difficult to find.
