About this property

Swim with the Penguins!

Architect's award-winning beach house overlooks quaint Simon's Town and False Bay. Wind-protected balcony allows one to barbecue while enjoying the sights of the beaches below. A colony of African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) has settled there and freely move among their human counterparts. Often they can be found nesting in the yard of the house.

In addition to the spectacular views over False Bay, there is a Golf Course across the street of the house and one may view golfers on the 7th green from the dining room table. There is safe, wind-free swimming on the warm side of the Cape Peninsula (Indian Ocean side) at Boulders beach, about 200 yards from the house.

Nearby Simon's Town (once a British Navy base and now the center of the South African Navy) has Victorian buildings and many shops, galleries and restaurants to visit.

This property was built by my late father, an architect as a weekend getaway house from our house in suburbia. The basic design was inspired by the brightly-coloured cliff houses of Positano, Italy. Pretty much every weekend of my highschool life was spent here, along with many friends. I have subsequently left South Africa, but I cannot leave this house, which is as part of my life as my heritage .

Why they chose this property

This property was inherited from my late parents. I have been visiting it for almost 50 years and never tire of it. The mandate was to build a maintenance-free beach house, and, except for the gutters and minimal paintwork around the windows, it's pretty much that! Some of our neighbours are STILL waiting for us to paint it. Simple, easy living. Drop your bags and head for the beach, or grab a cold beverage and admire the ocean view from the balcony.

What makes this property unique

The architectural feature that defines this house is something you would only notice when visiting. The weather in Cape Town is entirely dominated by the prevailing wind direction; in summer, the wind mostly comes from the southeast, and it can be a raging howl (Cape of Storms is a common name for the area). Sam (my late father) recognized this, and built the house backing as a wedge into the wind. As a result, even on the windiest summer days, the balcony is protected from the wind and one can enjoy the almost 270 degree view over the bay while relaxing and barbecuing. Similarly, Boulders Beach, below, is protected and is thus a popular venue for families. The addition of a penguin or two simply enhances everything.
