Gate House is an artistically converted tobacco grading shed at the entrance to an 80 acre farm and retreat center bordering the extensive Berea College Forest, in the Pinnacles area of the Appalachian mountains where the mountains meet the Bluegrass. Peace and connectedness reign here at Happiness Hills, which is more than a farm - it is a place of blessing and refreshment.
Berea College maintains hiking trails on Indian Fort Mountain, including West Pinnacle and East Pinnacle. The farm includes a lake which was developed for flood control purposes and fishing is allowed for guests. Deer, geese and wild turkey are seen, as well as other birds and wildlife. The farm is easily accessible from Highway US 421, just across from Pilot Knob near Big Hill, KY and close to Berea and Richmond. Berea is the folk arts capital of Kentucky and many craft shops are nearby, as well as several craft fairs each year.
Gate House is one large room and a bathroom with shower. It is set up for folks who want a simple place to get away for a while or a base for exploring the area crafts and sites. It may be used for larger groups in conjunction with a larger guest house, called Hill House (VRBO 229369). Most cell phones can get signal but some can't. The owners live right on the farm and are accessible for emergencies and other needs.
The queen size bed is very comfortable, and the sofa beds (single and double) are firm enough for a good night's sleep as well. Gate House is ideal for a couple or family with up to three children. Basic kitchen supplies are provided. A/C and heat are included. A snug pleasant get-away.
The cottage is next to a large remodeled tobacco barn available separately for covered gatherings and activities. An outdoor campfire and picnic site is also provided.
Owners, Alfredo & Jennifer Escobar and their daughters, Lydia and Isabel, love to interact with guests. Alfredo is a visual artist and Jennifer is a musician and dancer. Alfredo's murals and other paintings can be seen in Berea and other cities throughout the eastern USA. Jennifer has recorded 10 albums, several of which can be found on iTunes, and she's involved with two student folk dance groups: The Berea Festival Dancers (of which Lydia and Isabel are members) and The Berea College Country Dancers. They're homeschoolers, and are often called upon to work as arts education consultants through state arts councils and the Kentucky Department of Education. On any given day you may find them doing schoolwork at home, working on the farm or buildings, or out and about in the world doing their arts thing and trying to make life fuller for everyone they meet.
