Or, if you don't feel like cooking, take a short walk down to the beach where our local bar and grill, Buzzards, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, just a few minutes walk down the hill from the casita, is a beautiful white sandy beach. From late Nov to March, you're sure to see and hear the Grey and Humpack whales as they pass by. Adorable casita, great community, excellent host

  • 5 of 5

We'd stay here again in a second. Kim is easy, warm, helpful, super-informed. The casita is nicely designed and pleasantly decorated. Great, firm bed and outdoor shower. Shaded porch, and separate shaded patio, and a roof deck too. It's a 3-min walk to a nice beach, and you can watch (and sometimes /hear/) wales from the porch. Buzzard's restaurant is the only thing in the area, but it's perfect — delicious, reasonably priced, extremely friendly; you sit at tables with your feet in the sand and surrounded but a hundred little pots of herbs. Very convenient to San Jose (via a good road). Loved it here!

Secluded and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week at the end of February and had an amazing time. Kim is a wonderful host who is easy to contact and quick to help if you need anything, but also gives you space and privacy. Her dog Shorty is also friendly and adorable!

The property has a well equipped kitchen, a nice bathroom with good shower, and lots of great lounging areas. Some others have commented that the bed was too hard, we found it to be on the firm side, but very comfortable. We slept very well every night, feeling the cool night breeze and listening to the waves crashing on the beach. It is amazingly QUIET out there.

We saw whales while hanging out on the patio a couple times, which was rad.

The area is very safe, and the guards in the guard house are super friendly. It doesn't seem like an area where you would need to have guards (except maybe to keep the donkeys out), but having them there definitely adds to peace of mind.

Speaking of donkeys, there are a bunch around and they are pretty friendly! Just be careful driving, as they hang out in the road sometimes.

We rented a VW Gol from Cactus rental car company. It was their cheapest, tiniest offering (manual transmission) and was perfectly adequate for getting to and from the casita, as all the roads are paved. If you are interested in exploring the dirt roads further east (the east cape dirt road that runs along the coast, for instance) I would recommend renting something with better ground clearance and maybe 4WD. Cactus rents Jeeps, which is what we will get next time.

Kim provided us with written directions for getting to the casita, which were adequate, but we definitely could have used a GPS for the first time. After driving around the area for a couple days we didn't need the GPS anymore.

PRO TIP: If you have an iPhone and Google Maps App, you can download areas of the world, while on WIFI, and use your phone as a GPS without using any data while abroad. We found this to work remarkably well. Just remember to do it before you leave so you can use GPS to get from the airport to the Casita. For directions, I usually just set the GPS to Buzzards Bar and Grill, which the GPS locates readily and is easier than punching in the whole address.

Loved this sweet casita!

  • 5 of 5

I loved my stay at Kim's casita. It is super clean, cute and has everything you need. Located on top of a hill with spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez. Kim is a great host and very on top of things. The casita is perfect for 1 person or a couple. Her other apt is a perfect rental too. I loved it. I would highly recommend a rental car to explore the surrounding area. There's lots of cool places to explore!

Peaceful ocean view casita

  • 5 of 5

Kim has nicely decorated and outfitted this one bedroom casita. There was a lovely sitting area where we took coffee in to watch the morning unfold and wine in the evenings to the day close. It’s also a great spot to look for whales and seabirds. Enjoyed walks and the peace of the east cape.

Rest and Relaxation on the East Cape!

  • 5 of 5

This was our sixth time staying at Casita Salina Vista. We have been staying here off and on since 2006. Being off the grid is part of the experience that adds value to our rest and relaxation! Laguna Hills is a safe and secure area within easy walking distance to the beach. The hardest part about staying here is having to leave! Kim and Shorty are great hosts, and we look forward to our next stay with them.

The Other Cabo: Serenity, Beauty, and No Crowds

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for 6 days just after Hurricane Sandra had dumped quite a bit of rain on the area. There was no visible damage apart from that the dirt road was a poor condition - with hindsight, we recommend renting a Jeep or SUV instead of a small sedan. After 5 days a Caterpillar re-scraped the road, and the day we left it was in much better shape so most of the inconvenience was due to the heavy rain just before we arrived.

That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it started with our gracious host Kim, who was available to answer questions at any time including weather forecasts prior to our journey - which allowed us to delay the trip by two days so that the rain would not directly impact our visit. Thanks for being so flexible!

The listing description is accurate regarding the location, layout, amenities, etc., and the property was clean and well-maintained. The shower had just been renovated per the owner, and the main bathroom is spacious and great - you access it by walking a few steps outside the house, around the corner, whether from the main entrance or from the bedroom. The master bedroom has an en suite toilet. There is adequate privacy om all sides.

It was our first experience of staying in a 100% solar powered home - all homes in the area run on solar, with water being trucked in, and gas used for stove and oven. It all went without any problems. Be aware, as the descriptions states, that there is no microwave, and no TV. There is a small stereo system. The wireless Internet was too weak to work inside the property (I tried both my Samsung laptop and iPhone 6), but sitting on the patio it worked flawlessly - and that by itself was a very good reason to go an sit outside!

One day we drove to Cabo San Lucas (30 minutes away on a dual lane highway). That proved to us that staying in San Jose del Cabo (the "Other Cabo") was definitely the right choice. Much gentler and laid back.

In all, we recommend the property highly to any couple who wants peace and serenity, while being just 15 minutes away from San Jose del Cabo and all its wonderful restaurants, plus a huge supermarket called Mega. We tried three restaurants: La Lupita Tacos & Mezcal, Blue Fish Cabo, and Retro Burger Bar (you can find my reviews on TripAdvisor), in addition to Buzzards that is reached by foot just a few hundred yards from the property.

And yes, the location provides easy beach access.

Owner's Response: Bo, So glad you decided to postpone your trip and come two days later, as it worked out much better with the tropical storm we had. Yes, the rain does that to the roads coming in, but under normal circumstances, a smaller sedan on the dirt road is just fine. glad you enjoyed your trip, and it was nice having you both. look foward to seeing you again in the future.
