Guestbook comments from the owner

We were not sure what to expect on arrival at 'Chez Clarkey'. Described as quirky and charming it certainly surprised us, and was an absolute delight!

The property retains a rustic charm whilst having the modern conveniences that you would expect from a holiday rental. The open plan kitchen, living and dining area allowed for an inclusive and sociable environment when preparing meals. The layout of the property would lend itself to both couples and families as there is a master suite along with additional bedrooms.

The accommodation was spotless and very well appointed. The property benefits from a number of private balconies ideal for sundowners and soaking up the views. The town square can be seen across the river and hours can be spent people watching and soaking up the spectacular views over the foothills of the Pyrenees.

There are loads of activities in and around Quillan including white water rafting, hiking, fishing and cycling. The town has excellent facilities, market, grocery stores, bars and eateries. Carcassonne provides an excellent day trip and can be reached by train for only €1 (summer 2013).

The owners are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. It is evident that this is a much cherished home for them and that they want others to enjoy the home and area as much as they do.

An excellent place for a long weekend get away or a base for a longer visit exploring the area. Thank you for sharing your wonderful retreat with us!

Great view & good location

  • 4 of 5

The property is in a very good location with restaurants, cafes, a small supermarket & a very good bakery just a few minutes walk away. The views of the river, old town & mountains are exceptional.

The kitchen is compact & well-stocked for everything you need to prepare meals. It's even a joy to do the washing up with the wonderful views out of the kitchen window!

There is plenty of space in the property. As there was only 2 of us, I can only comment on the main bedroom. The bed is a good size & comfortable. The bedding could possibly do with upgrading. It is nice to be able to step out onto the balcony straight from the bedroom & the main bathroom next to it is a good size.

I am not sure whether we were the first guests of the season, but the property could have done with an airing, as it smelt a bit musty when we arrived.

It is a great location for walking, with plenty of routes from the town. We enjoyed hiking up into the mountains, but if you aren't feeling energetic, there is a nice path following the river, through a park and along to the next village.

We did have problems with the front door lock, which was a bit stressful whilst we tried to contact people to get it fixed. Luckily there is a 2nd door that can be padlocked, so it didn't stop us from getting out.

All in all, we have a lovely holiday & can definitely recommend the property & the area.

Perfect Location

  • 4 of 5

Three of us stayed in Quillan for one week and for us the location was perfect to explore the area. The villa was comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the terrace looking down on the town square. It was furnished nicely with comfortable couches and a good sized dining table. A slightly larger terrace table would have allowed meals there. For us parking was easy and the ramp up to the villa was an easy climb. A number of supermarkets were within walking distance, also restaurants. We would definitely recommend a stay here.

Cosy, comfortable, excellent location

  • 5 of 5

Brilliant location, easy drive from Carcassonne but Toulouse or Perpignan airports so close as well - or get the train to Quillan.

Parking always safely available, the property was easy to find, Debs & Clarkey were perfect hosts & provided so much info. & extra photos before we arrived - even suggesting local supermarket & shops to drop in at on the way - though they provide a well stocked store cupb’d & even some wine (on a replace what you use basis) what more could you ask for?!

The accommodation description doesn’t let you in on the surprise of how much space you have & good bedrooms/bathrooms - we kept losing each other around the house.

All furnished to such a high standard with nice linen & towels.

We like to eat out & cook when we are in France, the kitchen works perfectly & the view of Quillan from the open window is second to none, with the church bells, birdsong & tumbling river all you hear - so peaceful.

Wander up the Chateaux ramparts for an even wider view of the valley town & mountains - walks lead out from here, if you are more adventurous, there’s a great bundle of info. provided or the really friendly Tourist Information in town will let you choose walks around town & the valley or all of the Pyrennes & Corbieries destinations on your doorstep.

We had an epic day driving via Arques upto Chateteaux Villerouge Termes & back via the hills & gorges to Chat De Peyrepertuse & Maury - back home via Axat - a real experience of the area in one easy day.

Many more trips out from here are so good as Quillan is at the heart of such a special region.

Quillan is the friendliest town, everyone so welcoming from a rummage in the market to the local patisseries/boulangeries on an early morning, go to the boucherie/charcuterie on the corner of Rue de la Michance & Blv Jean Bourrel - enjoy a great welcome, chat & superb home prepared produce - try their local Pyrenne Sausisson roasted in the oven!!

We ate out at the La Galerie which was so so good & excellent value for delicious food & wine. Pizzeria Les Platanes is good as well, more local & hustle bustle - entrecôte & salad, as well as our pizzas top class - both restaurants locals & visitors, super friendly service - both fine with children. One of our party is a vegetarian amply catered for with interesting dishes at all the places we visited.

Drinks at Cafe Du Fleuve & La Palace in Place de la Republic 3 mins saunter from the house at any time of the day!

Stunning View Indeed

  • 5 of 5

Outstanding location above the village. The view from the kitchen sink made me want to volunteer to do dishes all week. Kitchen facilities good enough to produce meals 3 nights for 3 people. The Palace and Fleuve restaurants down in the square provided the other 2. Hot weather meant all the windows open so we had a bright, airy, open space to spend the week. Excellent place to spend our vacation. Thanks Debs and Clarkey!

Fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was situated so well - both from the point of view of having a wonderful view out over the river Aude at Quillan as well as the main square, but also because it was about halfway in between the major Cathar castles, and so was great for travelling around (journeys can take quite a long time because of all the hills).

Although described as 'quirky', the cottage was quirky in a nice way, and there was a nice amount of room.

Owner's Response: Hey Maggie, thank you so much for finding time to write a review. So pleased that you had a great time and that the location was perfect for your Cathar castle visits. We use 'quirky' due to it being a quite unusual cottage but agree that it has a lot of room. Cheers Debs & Clarkey

Great Stay in a lovely house in Quillan

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two weeks in Quillan enjoying a lovely village and great quirky cottage. We really enjoyed the house and could relax reading books, drinking wine and basking in the sun on the terrace.

Everyone one in Quillan was so friendly and we enjoyed some really nice meals and nights out and the cottage was a welcome place to return to.

Would definitely return and look to do so in the very near future.

Boasting Medieval fortresses, Roman aqueducts, Mediterranean coastline, endless vineyards and expansive national parks, a visitor could spend a lifetime exploring sunny Languedoc-Rousillon. Sitting on the geographic divide between the Iberian peninsula and mainland Europe, the regions towns and cities, including beautiful Carcassonne, Nimes and Montpellier, are connected by paths both ancient and new. Hike Via Domitia, a Roman road, or rent a barge for a trip down the Canal du Midi.

Official web site:

Quillan is located on the banks of the river Aude, and is a small and charming town that serves as a base for people exploring the deep and enchanting forests of the Pyrenees along with the captivating castles of the Cathars. The town has its own rather unusual castle. The perfectly square fortifications were built in the 1280's and are now largely ruins.

There's plenty of scope for sports and recreation, although rugby is certainly the most popular with the locals. What makes Quillan such an alluring destination is it's absorbing surroundings. Just about every adventurous activity you can think of such as horse riding, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hiking, climbing and cycling, are catered for among the rocky mountains, deep gorges and dark caves of the Upper Aude Valley. If you'd prefer something a bit more relaxing then you'll be pleased to know that you can also give bowls or fishing a go. For the latter, the best place to head is Mont-Bel with its impressive mountain lake. There is a swimming pool in the town itself for the summer months while the Mediterranean Sea is just an hour and a half away.

The most popular white water sports resort is based in nearby Axat. If you'd rather try a spot of caving then head to Grottes de l'Aguzou, a vast underground network decorated with crystal and aragonite. In the winter, grab your skis and head to Camurac where you'll find sixteen slopes that are ideal for a range of expertise. There are also facilities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Or you are only 45-50 minutes from Ax les Thermes which has fantastic skiing and thermal spas.
