The cottage sits in the peaceful conservation village of Gattonside, originally used as an orchard by the monks of Melrose Abbey. It features narrow winding paths from the main street which lead down to a charming suspension footbridge first erected in 1826 which crosses the Tweed river and links the village to the town of Melrose. Gattonside has two highly regarded restaurants - Seasons and The Hoebridge, both just a short walk away. You will find an excellent range of amenities in Melrose - a five minute drive or a 15 minute walk - including a super selection of quality food shops, some of the best independent shopping in the Borders, and a number of wonderful eating establishments.

Stylishly unique and extremely comfortable accommodation. The Cottage is immaculately presented and offers cosy, comfortable accommodation for up to 4 guests. The sitting room has been thoughtfully furnished with rich warm fabrics and lovely antique furnishings and artwork. The well-appointed country kitchen looks out onto a sunny private garden and patio where you can plan your day over your first morning cuppa and a freshly baked croissant.

The Cottage has a flat screen TV with Freeview and DVD, an iPod dock, as well as books, games, DVDs and CDs for relaxed nights in or wet-weather days. The two bedrooms (one double, one twin) are presented in a contemporary country cottage style with comfortable mattresses to ease you into a blissful night’s sleep.

The Region
The Borders is a land of beautiful landscapes where wild upland hills give way to green and pleasant valleys on a journey to the sea. They offer outstanding facilities for cycling, hill walking, driving and bird watching. The Borders has been fought over since Roman times, was the cradle for the spread of Christianity in Scotland and the North of England, and home to the lawless Border Reivers who bequeathed the words blackmail and bereaved to the English language.

For walkers whether you want a gentle stroll or something more demanding, the Borders is home to 1500 miles of dedicated walking routes and six national walks. Walkers will find themselves within half a mile of the Southern Upland Way, while St Cuthbert's Way starts in Melrose and heads for Lindisfarne. The Border Abbey Ways circular walk passes through attractive countryside, by the four great 12th Century Abbeys of Melrose, Jedburgh, Kelso and Dryburgh and through several Border Towns. Anglers have the Tweed practically on the doorstep and there are plenty of stocked lochs nearby. Melrose has an excellent 9-hole golf course on the shoulder of the Eildon Hills, one of 21 excellent courses in the area. There are tennis courts in the park at Melrose, riding about 4 miles away and, of course, this is the heart of rugby country, with the Greenyards at Melrose being the home of the rugby Sevens game.

For less active days, there is a wealth of stately homes, ruined abbeys, historic castles and peel towers to visit - the nearest is probably Sir Walter Scott's home of Abbotsford, just four miles distant - as well as some lovely gardens nearby like Monteviot and Mertoun. The beaches of East Lothian, Berwickshire and Northumberland are within an hour's drive. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is 9 miles south of Berwick on Tweed - connected to the mainland by a causeway, covered by the sea twice a day. Check the tide tables.

How to get there
This immaculate cottage is located in the charming conservation village of Gattonside, which lies just across the Tweed from the historic town of Melrose. The cottage is some 35 miles south of Edinburgh midst the beautiful Borders country and centrally placed for touring the area. Winding lanes lead down to the river and a chain footbridge which links Gattonside with Melrose is just a short stroll away.

The Borders is reached by road from north and south via the A1, A7 and A68 linking Edinburgh with London, Carlisle and Darlington respectively and the A72 which traverses the region from east to west. The nearest airport and rail link is in Edinburgh.

Great property in a quiet location with lots to do locally.
We had a lovely stay at September Cottage. We booked it to visit Berwick Upon Tweed which was a short drive away but we enjoyed the journey through the countryside sometimes having the road to ourselves for miles. I think I was drawn to Gattonside because I had read about The Hoebridge Restaurant and we had an excellent meal there which was great value for the quality of the food - highly recommended. The cottage was a short and pleasant walk from Melrose across The River Tweed; we really loved Melrose with its independent shops, great range of cafes and restaurants and friendly, welcoming people. The cottage itself was immaculately clean and very comfortable, the kitchen was really well equipped for self-catering and it felt very homely. The goodies left for us by the host were a thoughtful gesture and we enjoyed the biscuits, chocolate & especially the homemade marmalade - thank you. I would highly recommend this property and would definitely book it again if I came back to the area.

About the host

I grew up in the Borders and though I moved away for work, it has remained my spiritual home. As a child I lived not far from where September Cottage sits. We bought the cottage because we loved Gattonside and the proximity to great walking (right outside the door), the River Tweed and Melrose. We use the Cottage too for our visits with family and friends.

Why they chose this property

September Cottage in Gattonside, Melrose offers style and comfort, for up to 4 people in the Scottish Borders. Perfect for fishing on the Tweed, walking (Southern Upland/Borders Way/Abbeys Way), bird watching, sightseeing, rugby, Book Festival and, trips to the coast.
