Mabel's Casita - Gorgeous Restored Historic Adobe-Walk to the Plaza

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Tucked away on a secluded hilltop plaza that dates from 1796, you'll find Mabel's Loma Grande Casita (named for famed Taos matriarch, Mabel Dodge Luhan). The beautifully restored casita has a kiva fireplace in the mysterious bedroom, which was inspired by original textiles from the Yucatan. The living room is framed by huge viga logs, nichos and a wood-burning iron fireplace. The retreat is filled with hand-made rugs, talavera tiles and wood floors. The casita has everything you'll need- a fully appointed kitchen, laundry facilities and a charming outdoor courtyard, perfect to enjoy the famous Taos sunsets. Relax in the cedar hot tub or try your hand at some 'plein air' painting. The restaurants and galleries are a short 3-block walk. Some of the wonderful art pieces are available for purchase.

About Kate Culligan & Josh Comfort

Kate Culligan and Josh Comfort have lived in Denver for over 30 years owning and managing rental properties as a side- line to their professional lives. They have a Brady Bunch of kids-with Josh’s four kids and Kate’s two. She is a former Marketing and Promotions executive with Clear Channel Radio and has recently started a consulting practice specializing in career development. Josh is an Architect with extensive historic renovation experience, and has been a prime mover in the revitalization of Lower Downtown Denver, which is now filled with lofts and restaurants, many designed by Josh. A short 4-1/2 hour drive away, Taos offered a dramatically contrasting experience – inner city life in a burgeoning metropolitan area versus an ambling pace in a culturally complex small town.

Their Taos adventure began eight years ago during a weekend getaway taken to replenish themselves during a particularly challenging period of their lives. Little did they know that a Sunday stroll down Morada Lane would result in a signed contract to purchase their first “unloved” but charming historic property, Casa Manana. The property had been empty for over a year and lacked adequate plumbing and electrical. But Kate and Josh saw through the overgrown courtyard and fuchsia pink walls to see the great “bones” of the property. After an extensive year- long renovation, they were hooked! Five years later they discovered La Loma plaza with its beautiful location on a hill overlooking the town. The private chapel and charming 200- year old homes were enticing and Casa Loma Chica and Mabel's were born.

Kate Culligan & Josh Comfort purchased this house in 2004

Why Kate Culligan & Josh Comfort chose Taos

We love rescuing historic properties and LaLoma Plaza is one of the hidden gem's of Taos. The plaza is one of the earliest settlements in the town with its own chapel and private plaza. The character of our casita was irresistable...the thick adobe walls, huge vigas on the ceiling and the location was perfect. We spent one full year rennovating it and have loved every minute. Since then, we continue to bring in new local art pieces, folk art, paintings and unique finds. Some of these pieces are now available for sale.

What makes this house unique

Mabel's is named after Mabel Dodge Luhan one of Taos' most influential art patrons of early 1900's. We have filled the casita with unique pieces of art, many of which are now available for sale. The colors of the walls are inspired by our many visits to colonial Mexico and South America...strong colors set the tone for a romantic stay.

Cute Casita, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our two mini dachshunds loved our stay. The casita is perfect for two people. We enjoyed relaxing on the small back patio most evenings with a glass of wine and a good book. The location is within walking distance of many of the restaurants and shopping opportunities.

Alameda, CA

charming, well located historic casita

  • 4 of 5

comfortable for a couple, cozy, fun and interesting artwork. Well located for a walkabout around historic Taos. Owners Josh and Kate and caretakers Marcella and Wayne very responsive when events beyond anyone's control necessitated a move to an adjacent property ( which was equally charming)

Wonderful casita in historic Taos

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed so much spending the Christmas in Mabel’s casita. Clean and cozy house with a lot of charm!

Location is just perfect-10 minutes walk to the Plaza!

House was well stocked and had all the things needed for a comfortable vacation.

We truly appreciate Christmas lights placed on a front door and a presence of small nativity scene -that made our Christmas away from home really special!

Thank you so much and we are looking forward to come back!
