A Wonderful Retreat
This place was amazing and it was an amazing zen retreat for me. The owners were very nice and responsive to questions. The property was beautiful. I felt safe and comfortable and hidden away from the world. Once I checked in, I didn’t leave the island until check out. It was bliss.

The Perfect mountain getaway.
Fun, Quiet, secluded, nurturing, restorative, & a turn key stay. If you are looking to be in a quiet and powerful natural setting directly on a river, where all you need to do is arrive and all is thought of, and taken care of by the host, then this is your place to be. Liz and paul keep the property and cabin in perfect functioning order. Everything from plates, bowls, napkins, blankets pots and pans are there for you, to come and nurture yourself in deep nature at the drop of a hat. They both were incredibly accommodating, kind, helpful, and easy going.. I enjoyed so many nuisances of the stay. A very fun swinging bridge of 50-70 ft that is the access to the island. Hearing the sound of the river was so soothing, calming, grounding, and restorative, night and day The seclusion from any human was one of the most enjoyable parts of the visit that allowed for 100% freedom. I particularly enjoyed the out side foot pump hot/warm shower in the captured pure rain water. Also, the Incinerator toilet gets mention as a first time experience, of impressive note. We Human’s are so inventive solution oriented people.. At night one can see the stars backdropped but the full sounds of animals and running water, that can be enjoyed on 1 or 2 of the hammocks on the property or perhaps warmly settled next to the fire ring, where you get to stay very warm on a cold night.. Oh, and the bed was very comfortable with multitudes of blankets to stay warm on even the coldest of nights. That’s if you did not choose to use the wood burning stove within the cabin😊 Sometimes it is nice to sleep in the natural cold and snuggle wonderfully close, to your partner or guest😊 Be prepared for one of the most wonderful experiences of your life when you choose to reside on the Island!!!

Misrepresented
The amenities associated with this property are definitely misrepresented. It is NOT a private island and we did NOT have access to the entire island. There is another rental on the "mainland" and those renters use the top part of the island. In fact, we were specifically asked not to go to the top of the island. Also, listed in the amenities for this rental was a washer and dryer. When my girlfriend asked the host about the washer and dryer, she was rudely told that she must have looked at the amenities for the other rental. After we left, the host admitted that the washer & dryer were indeed listed accidentally in the amenities list for this property...she has since corrected that list. The river is beautiful at this location but is shallow and is not suited for for swimming. Finally, the host provided a smores basket which was very thoughtful; however, the Graham crackers she left in the basket expired a year & a half ago. We won't be returning to this rental.

Perfection!
I would rate this higher than 5 if I could! Liz and Paul were so easy to communicate with. Americana Cabin is rustic yet very comfortable. This was the perfect place to celebrate our 36th anniversary. We enjoyed the porch every morning, the river in the afternoon and dinner and dessert cooked on the fire pit in the evenings. The view (and hummingbirds) we enjoyed nonstop. The bed was so comfortable, I had to double check to make sure it was an air mattress! Liz and Paul, thank you for another wonderful stay. We are looking forward to coming back again!

About the host

Hosted by Liz and Paul Wiederhold

Host profile image
Paul and Liz Wiederhold moved to 'the river' in 2006 to follow their dreams. Their incredible new riverfront location begged to be shared... and 'Riverside Escapes' was born. More than vacation rentals, the future of Riverside Escapes will include riverfront weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats, and more. The Wiederholds were married on the property's island and live onsite where they provide personal service for their guests. The property is full of animals; Diamond - our very friendly campus mascot dog, a flock of very pampered free range chickens, a pair of mallard ducks who have taken up voluntary residency, and lots of other birds and critters. Paul owns a high end roofing company specializing in slate, tile, copper and metal roofs, and copper gutters. When not working, Paul loves to fish, kayak and generally enjoy the river. Liz enjoys hostessing and working 'hands on' at Riverside Escapes including fixing and building things, as well as designing, decorating, sewing and landscaping.

Why they chose this property

The Americana Cabin is our favorite! It is a glamping style cabin on an island in the river. The French Broad River is a spectacular river meandering through a spectacular town. 'Broad' is a descriptive name for this large, majestic river which is largely unspoiled by development. Yet, just down river, Asheville North Carolina offers all of the excitement, arts, fine dining, nightlife, and eclectic culture that anyone could seek. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and so many other natural gifts are just a short drive away. Madison County offers some of the beautiful whitewater rafting locations, unspoiled mountain land, and even snow skiing in Wolf Laurel. Our location is ideally located just north of Asheville and south of Madison County. It is truly the best of both worlds.

What makes this property unique

Riverside Escapes offers the only island vacation rental in the area and one of just a few riverfront properties. Guests are encouraged to walk the swinging bridge, fish from the shores, sit by the riverside campfire, and generally immerse themselves in the incredible natural beauty of the property. There is something for everyone here. For the more adventurous type, our island cabin offers the feel of remote camping, but none of the hassles. For those seeking more luxury, our mainland cabin has all the comforts of home and more with a hot tub, custom tile showers, coffee bar, wireless internet access, and more.
