About this property

Beautifully Restored Property with Heated Pool in Small Village

Beautifully restored, 3 bedroom 19th century property with stunning views of the Alps, private garden and pool located in the middle of the Luberon – ideal for relaxing, exploring and sport activities. Montjustin has 54 inhabitants, no through car traffic, no noise and no pollution. In the village there is a small club organizing weekly cultural events.

La Fenice is the original “mas” which has been carefully restored and tastefully decorated, with a stone fireplace and terracotta floor tiling throughout. The villa and the grounds, at the top of the village (the lane stops just past your back door) with incredible views of the Luberon national park were part of the old castle compound . The large garden opens into a panoramic view of the Luberon and the Alps. At an altitude of 600m, the nights in Montjustin are clear, beautiful and comfortable, even in the warmest summer days.

Two interconnecting stone vaults (wonderfully cool in summer) give the house a unique character. The kitchen, sited into one of them, has all modern amenities. The second stone vault is a combined living/dining room with open fireplace. Behind the kitchen there is a huge utility room.

There is ample living space. In addition to a combined living/dining room with open fireplace on the ground floor and a self-contained sitting or play area in the extension, there is a big upstairs lounge, also with Provencal fireplace, picture windows and doors on to one of the spacious terraces.

Outside, the quarter acre (1000 sq. m) garden offers panoramic views over the beautiful Luberon countryside and the Alps. It contains a 8 x 4m landscaped, heated floodlit pool treated with salt with night blanket, surrounding terraces and plentiful garden furniture.

Standard bookings are Saturday to Saturday. For other dates, please contact owner.

Magical house on a hill
If you are looking for a get-away from it all, Meir’s beautiful home on Montjustin is your place! The town is tiny - just a few residents - and you need to drive to nearby Cereste or Reillane (or longer drive to Manosque) for supplies, but once you’re stocked up, this very French and roomy home with a pool, petanque, yard, and more is the perfect spot. We loved making it our home for a week and hope to come again. One word of caution: lots of steps and hard surfaces - fine for us but wondered how a family with young children or elderly parents might fare. Another gem is the multiple dining areas - we tried them all! Breakfast on the balcony, lunch by the pool, and dinner on the front patio. House is well stocked and laundry machine and DW make living a breeze. The town is quiet - not a sound unless the local bar has a band. Happened once while we were there. Cool music and atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Beautiful location
The property was a very nice traditional French house on top of a ridge in the small village of Montjustin. The house was clean and tidy with everything we needed for the weeks stay. The pool was refreshing and lovely to dip into during the hot summer days. We played boule in the garden before walking to see the sunset over the luberon hills in the evening. The walks around the area are stunning and there are many beautiful villages, towns and sites to visit. Further away are lakes and activities (>1hr) away at the Verdon gorge and lake of Sainte-Croix. We also had a great night at the little restaurant in montjustin with live folk music. A great peaceful retreat for our party of 5 (4 adults and a 4 year old)

Unfortunately, overall a disappointment
When we arrived and met the local property manager, the pool was very dirty and the house musty smelling. We raised with the owner and he arranged a pool clean, but we were left with the feeling that the house is relatively uncared for, in terms of renting out. The local property manager really should've checked and prepared the property for our arrival, to make sure it was spick and span for our arrival. The pool by the way, collects insects and debris from nearby bushes very quickly, so once cleaned, it needs cleaning again within 15-20m minutes. This amount of cleaning really should be catered for by the owner, or at least, made very clear on the property description, so prospective renters are forewarned. The kitchen is well stocked but is grubby in places and touch points generally are a bit sticky with grime. The interior is dated generally, and whilst the fabric of the building could be described as nicely restored, the accommodation, pool and pool area are dated and tired. Also, the garden backs onto the local village Marie and square, where events happen most evenings. We found these pleasant, and we joined in on some, but the noise and lateness of hour could be considered intrusive for others. Monjustin itself is beautiful with amazing views of the Luberon and instant access to PR and GR routes. We enjoyed, as we're walkers. To sum up, we felt the rent was expensive and definitely, the description should be more clear about the issues, all mentioned above.

Magical spot
What an incredible gem! Private, beautiful, welcoming, peaceful and surrounded by a wonderful little town snugged into a gorgeous landscape. The home is full of everything you’ll need and the owners and caretaker are a delight to work with! Truly an exceptional spot

About the host

I am a computer engineer and my wife is a neuro-psychologist - now both retired living in Israel. We lived on three continents and traveled throughout the world.
We typically spend six to eight weeks a year in the house. We come in early spring before the season to check that our guests will have everything they need. Then we come again at the end of the summer to prepare the house for the autumn guests. Throughout the season we keep in close contact with both our local Property Manager and our guests to ensure that our guests are fully satisfied. And judging by the reviews, we are succeeding.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the Luberon area twenty years ago. Everything enchanted us - the views, the smells, the food, the wine. And the friendly people - unlike the Parisian waiters!
We purchased this property because it is suitable first of all for us and our family. It is located in a small village - private but not secluded. It is not on a main highway, but can be easily reached from a main highway. The house and the grounds are large and comfortable, the right size for a large family or two couples with children.
Since it is on a hill, the evenings and nights are cool even in the heat of the summer. And the views ....

What makes this property unique

What is unique about La Fenice? I would say that it does satisfy a broad range of requirements and interests. Great location for visiting a beautiful area with full of attractive sites. Comfortable house and grounds for relaxing and enjoying the views. Scenic village at the crossroads of the French national hiking trails system. Safe area (no through traffic) for walking around with children.
