About this property

Quiet, isolated oasis on 300 feet of Lake Superior beach and 10 wooded acres.

The "Ray's Random Point" is a quiet, isolated oasis on 300 feet of Lake Superior beach, trout pond, and 10 wooded acres. This enchanted location is only 5 miles from downtown Marquette with easy access to Northern Michigan University, numerous restaurants, shops, hiking & biking trails, and regional events.

This is the U.P. at it's finest. After turning off the main road, you will meander 1/2 mile down a paved and gravel driveway through the woods and down toward majestic Lake Superior. Upon arrival, you will hear birds, the wind through the trees, and the water lapping (or crashing!). We adore this place because of the peacefulness and isolation, yet convenience to town.

Your apartment is located above a detached garage, so be aware that you will need to navigate open stairs.

*Please note: For November-April rentals, 4WD or AWD vehicle is REQUIRED to navigate the steep hill.
* You will have a fully stocked kitchen to prepare all your meals. Fully stocked means pots, pans, appliances, oil, spices, coffee, and tea.
* Sleeping set-up: Bedroom #1 has a queen-size bed. Bedroom #2 has two single beds. The livingroom has a futon couch which can be used as a bed. And there is a loft with an additional twin mattress.
* All linens are 100% cotton. And there are plenty of comfy pillows.
* High ceiling, and lots of windows.
* Water: The tap water is perhaps the best water you will ever taste. Comes fresh from a well and springs on the property. (tested regularly)
* Wrap-around deck with outdoor seating and grill.
* Wi-Fi access. The system was recently upgraded so you have great internet access. Cell reception is spotty. Texting works fine, but phone calls may be challenging.
* There is a smart TV; no cable connection
* Short, sandy trail down to the beach. Great beach for playing and swimming. Sandy and shallow. However! Do know that Lake Superior is unpredictable. A big storm may take the sand away overnight, leaving a beach of rocks. And then another storm brings the sand back. There is currently (June 2020) a beautiful, small sandy beach. Please know that Lake Superior is very dynamic. We have had a huge beach and we have had a rocky beach. Literally, because of the high water, the beach now changes week to week depending upon water and wind movement. We can not guarantee what the beach will look like. Talk to Grandmother Gitchee Gumee (Lake Superior) about that.
* We do NOT provide kayaks or any watercraft. You may bring your own. If you do, please bring life jackets as well.
* A/C
* You will likely be overwhelmed by Lake Superior expanding in front of your apartment. However, you may also be enchanted by a spring fed pond resting alongside the driveway with Blue Heron, Mallard Ducks, Kingfisher, and Bull Frogs. Yet of more interest to some are the Brook and Rainbow trout hidden within the pond. We have provided fish food pellets and feeding them is a delight.

Access to trails:
1 mile to Sugarloaf
2 miles to Hogsback, North Country Trail and Noquemanon Trails
4 miles to Little Presque Isle and Harlow Lake
And many, many more....!

This property is owned and loved by the Ray family. We are happy to share this magical place. Welcome!

Outstanding location/private beach
We thoroughly enjoyed our own private cove/beach to watch the sunset, swim, and even got up early to watch the sun rise. I will purposely plan our next vacation to Marquette based on the availability of this property.

Great place. Superb location
We were only there for two nights but it was a fantastic stay. The house was nice, clean and fully furnished with everything we needed. The water is just a short, maybe 25 yard walk from the house. The water was chilly and the sand had been sucked off the beach by the water so we didn’t spend a lot of time down there but the view of it from the house was great. I would stay there again if it’s available next time I’m up there.

Beautiful secluded natural paradise
A comfortable, well appointed spot near Marquette to take in the wonders of Superior. Friendly hospitality & communication and nice extras set up in the house, like coffee and body lotion.

Needs a little TLC
This is an amazing property but seems like maybe it's been a bit neglected. We stayed for three nights and loved the layout, character, and location. As an FYI, there is no "beach" and the rocks at the waterfront are very difficult to navigate and set chairs on. The beach picture in the listing is not accurate/updated from mother nature's latest shenanigans. The super slippery mossy rocks in the water make it difficult to get in the water without falling. However, if you can get past the rocks, it's wonderfully sandy and shallow a ways out. When we booked the property, the manager said she didn't know if there would be beach b/c of the snow! We were able to use our SUP's and enjoyed checking out the area from the water. The path down to the waterfront needs to be cleaned up - trim the plants and perhaps put in some more steps. The rope handrail is helpful but minimal. Originally my mother-in-law was going to join us. I don't think she would have been able to get down there easily and would have had a tough time walking on the unstable waterfront rocks. The view from the main room is limited, b/c the trees have grown and filled in! The picture on the listing must be a few years old. The sliding screen door had so many holes, the mosquitoes were in heaven having full access to us. Unfortunately, the air conditioner did not work, when we finally succumbed to using it our last night. I also agree with a previous review, it would be nice to have some comfortable chairs to sit on in the main living room. A hard futon that faces the side wall, was not great for more than 2 people and doesn't take advantage of the potential views. Having at least 4, if not more places to comfortably sit facing each other and/or the big windows, would be nice. Also, as a side note, the well broke (understandably these things happen) on the last day and night so we were without water, toilet, shower for our last afternoon, night, and morning - which was not so fun. It was like really expensive camping! ;-)The owner was very apologetic, brought us plenty of drinking water and buckets of water to "flush" the toilets with. They also bought us dinner at their restaurant. We had a nice stay at this property, just had higher hopes for the price we paid.

About the host

This property is owned by the Ray Family. Since we come and go from the property, we have arranged to have a steady co-host (Michele) to be your primary person to contact.

Why they chose this property

Tom and Brenda Ray always loved camping and fishing in the U.P. and jumped at the opportunity to purchase land here. Brenda designed and built the house with help from their kids and local builders. Tom and Brenda were endlessly enchanted by this property. Tom built a trout pound and spent so much time tending to it, that the fish became pets rather than dinner. Brenda tended to the flower garden, which was a constant dance between wild and cultivated. And they both reveled in the isolation and the mysteries of nature. Now that both Tom and Brenda have passed, we- the kids and grandkids- would like to maintain this special place for our families and friends to enjoy. Some of us live in Marquette; others visit whenever possible. .

What makes this property unique

The ability to enjoy this amount of privacy and nature so close to town is incomparable.
