Casa Cowee, a rustic recently renovated island-style home on a lush private 1 acre estate, nestled in the warm, friendly community of Sandy Bay, offers dramatic million dollar views of the Caribbean and richly varied living spaces – a spacious Main House with master bedroom with new king bed and loft with queen bed or two single beds and large covered Sunset Deck where friends meet for breakfast and evening cocktails. Casa Cowee's 200-foot swimming dock (occasionally enjoyed by our neighbors) and tranquil waterfront provide unlimited fishing, snorkeling (reef in front of property), swimming, diving, dolphin-watching, and the opportunity to explore the colorful marine life in the Sandy Bay/West End Marine Reserve.

We have added two new kayaks for your enjoyment and provide you with snorkelling equipment for your stay. So you can create a dream vacation package by pre-booking tours, snorkelling and fishing trips.

Located on our beach just a couple of minutes walk is the Blue Bahia Beach Restaurant, Tranquil Seas Bar and restaurant, Fragapini bar/ restaurant at the Myoka Lodge and several local good eats. For diving Octopus Dive School, Tranquil Seas and Anthony's Key.

This unique beachfront plus rain forest property is just a short 10 min. drive to West End Village for dining, shopping and great evening entertainment. On Roatan fun is had by all residents and tourists alike.

The home is surrounded by expansive decks offering gracious outdoor living with lush tropical landscaping and exquisite sunset views. There is a charcoal BBQ on the deck.

For sleeping there is a large private Master Bedroom Pod with a new king bed and a large loft in the main living pod with a new queen bed. A single can be added upon request.

We have just added another full suite to Casa Cowee to cater to couples wanting separate sleeping/ bath quarters. This is a stunning sunny unit overlooking the water with it's own small kitchen, 3 pc bath and living space with a queen bed. It has it's own private deck. It can be added to the rental of the main house for $75.00 per night. Pictured in the last three photos on the listing

We invite you to enjoy our family home. Come live in an island paradise – relax on your private verandah overlooking the deep blue Caribbean Sea, cooled by trade winds and surrounded by the fragrance of beautiful tropical flowers.

The romantic and private Temple Tree House has just been finished and provides water front views from two decks. One large bedroom with 8' closet. Large bath with 7' open shower. Beautiful wood floors. Kitchen with new appliances. Steps from front deck directly on the beach. This house is rented separately but of course can be included in the Main House rental upon request.

Keywords: Diving Lush private rustic romantic sunsets beach dock reef dolphins fishing island luxury kayaks snorkelling huge decks, high up off the beach, estate, gated, secure, safe, fruit trees, 60' palms, massive Le Ceiba rain forest tree, lemons, jack fruit, mango tree.

Security, Casa Cowee had a theft in 2010.

Since I bought Casa Cowee in 2013 I have made it one of the most secure properties on Sandy Bay. Reason? Same as at home in Canada. If security is high there is less chance of intruders. I stay here on my own most times and I like to feel safe like everyone else. This Island is wonderful oasis and there is no need to live in a gated community. The Islanders are wonderful and helpful. The laws are now extremely strict about stealing and penalties far exceed petty crime.

We ask that all our guests use the security provided. Not only to protect them but to protect Casa Cowee's reputation and it's staffs jobs.

Breath taking

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time coming to Honduras and I will guarantee that I will be back again. Casa Cowee has one of the best views on the island by far. Just outside of your door is an amazing reef where you can spend literally all day snorkling around in. To the right off of your deck over looking the bay is the dolphin pen where you can see them jumping around every morning

Casa Cowee is very central from the grocery store and the west end where you can go for a more touristy feel. If you step on to the beach and walk down you will come to the beach grill which was by far our favourite place to be. Great drinks, amazing service and a boat full of laughs.

I highly reccomend renting this place to anyone who is coming to Roatan, it is very homey yet exotic in all its ways. I will 110% rent here again and come back for a much longer stay this time, a week is only a tease.

Thank you Susanne for an unforgettable experience.

Owner's Response: Wow thanks Keith for the thumbs up and such a concise review. You captured the feel and in one week it is hard to enjoy everything that is available to you in our little West Sandy Bay. Then there is so much more to experience on the island. We are looking forward to your return. Cheers Suzanne

Normally it is squalls that blow through then sun at that time but this year was unusual. Hope you come back and enjoy the wonderful sun. Spring, summer is always delightful. Suzanne

Wonderful for the whole family!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Casa Cowee and thank you and the team for everything! We had a lot of fun and have a few people to thank! First, Channin is so good and was a world of assistance to us. From grocery shopping to excursions to island information – he is the expert! Kimberly was so nice and helpful to us as my mother was coming in later than our arrival – she is a host of information and was wonderful to us. Throughout the week, Jose was an angel! He was helpful, courteous and seemed to anticipate our needs without ever being intrusive. It was so nice to have him on the property – he was amazing. The house was wonderful – clean and beautiful. I have so many pictures of us on the deck – overlooking the ocean and sunsets….just gorgeous. The BBQ area was a hit and we used it a lot when we were there. It was very relaxing even with the holidays as the people of Roatan are so friendly and warm. And so willing to help each other out in any circumstance….after a big storm, a car was stuck and out of nowhere, so many people came to help. The ocean in front of the house is incredible – the amount of fish, sting rays and shells was like snorkeling in an aquarium. Our kids do not dive, but the next time we go back, we will be! Our trip to Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout was one of the highlights of the trip. Playing with monkeys was pure laughter and fun…holding a sloth is how everyone should start their day!!! Getting to West End and West Bay turned out to be very simple and we made a couple of trips, but we loved the serenity of Casa Cowee and were always so thankful of the house upon our return. Blue Bahia Bar and Grill was a favorite when we did not eat at home. Such great food at reasonable prices with such a warm staff – awesome. Reentry was tough, but our memories are keeping us going until we return. Happy New Year to you, Channin, Kimberly and Jose - thank you for making our trip so memorable!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking so much time to review Chantal. It really helps everyone considering Casa Cowee. I even heard from someone you talked to in Montreal after your stay but unfortunately our regular guests had booked Christmas '18 already. Thanks for the great referral. Looking forward to your return! Everyone says hi to the kids! Oh and you of course. LOL Suzanne

The best. We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Cowee was a great experience. The house was brilliantly designed in the 70s and has lots of island charm and character. And intelligence, too! It's many louvered windows and fans were perfect for air circulation. The house and decks look out on the sea, with the reef just a 100 yards out. We cooked and lounged and read all day. Jose (the caretaker/gardener – oh, the grounds are beautiful too) was terrific. He brought us extra water, snorkeling equipment, and even fresh limes from the trees in the garden. The property managers were charming and informative as well. Everything worked for us, including the excellent communication with the host.

An Authentic, Truly Relaxing Escape

  • 5 of 5

My 16 year old son and I spent a wonderful week here in October. The main house is exactly as it looks in the pictures - extremely well kept, comfortable, safe, and very relaxing. And that deck - seriously come here for the deck alone! My son lived in the hammocks while I rotated favorite deck spots depending on the time of day. Bird watching with coffee on the side deck every morning, reading at the table during the heat of the day and looking out at the sunset with a cocktail in the evening.

We did a little of everything while we were there and it was very easy to choose one activity a day with lots of time left over for relaxation, daily naps, and eating out. Snorkeling, Dolphin Adventure, Zip Line, Sloth/Monkey Holding, Fishing, Island Tour, Eating Out, Hiking, and did I mention that deck?

So as I go on with all the wonderful things to do on the island and around the house I have to say the very best part of Casa Cowee are the people. Channin and Kim are so much more than tour guides. They are true ambassadors for Roatan and will make you love everything about it. Spending time with their lovely family was truly special. The best way to approach your vacation is to let them know what you like to do and the kind of experiences you are hoping for and then let them curate the perfect vacation for you. Jose lives on the property and has a sixth sense for anticipating your needs while giving you total privacy. We had not snorkeled much before and after seeing my uncertainty he graciously guided us in front of the house and took us all over the coral reef showing us how it is done. And on his day off! The snorkeling is breathtaking and we went every day after! Jose was wonderful and as a single mom I really appreciated how safe I felt knowing he was watching out for us.

Going on a fishing/snorkeling tour with Channin and Jose is a must!

Which brings me to one point that needs mentioning. I found everything I am about to say charming and fun but it may not appeal to everyone. The beach in front of the house is public so the locals walk and drive by all day - it is a well used thoroughfare. I enjoyed the people watching and felt more a part of a community which is how I prefer to vacation but it did get loud on occasion. The house is located in a neighborhood so there are dogs that bark and chickens that crow. Again - part of a working community. We loved it.

We hope you stay here and enjoy it as much as we did!

Owner's Response: Hi Brodie, Woman not man LOL. Kim, Channin and Jose loved having you and your son as guests. Lots of great comments. Your description is so accurate. I am just heading down for 3 weeks and now really dying to get there. We are so happy you had such a great adventure! Thanks also for confirming the beach is a walk way with some slow vehicle traffic. A kick back when it was the main road for horses and walking (only 20 years ago) F There are very isolated places on the island if people are looking for heavy quiet all the way to the the hectic action of West Bay's beach and West End. There is certainly a place for every traveller. While I am down we are revamping the dock to make it less accessible as we do have the best swimming hole. I like an accurate review and yours told the walkability and excellent access to local business etc. the reef for snorkelling which can keep me busy for hours. It also sounds like you made the most of the island using the best tour guide ever. Fishing also wow!. It is also good to hear that your 16 yr old loved the trip with Mom. A special time he will always remember. Hope to see you come back, Suzanne

A nice beach house in a great location

  • 4 of 5

This house and the Casitas are just across from Anthony's key resort and walking distance to the Botanical gardens which should not be missed either. Jose the house manager helped us set up horseback riding on the beach and was very helpful. He cut fresh mangos and opened the coconuts up for us. The dock was nice but there was no ladder so climbing out was necessary by hoisting yourself up. The outdoor porch and deck were a great place to hang out. I think the bathroom in the big house was a bit rustic compared to the others. We used the outdoor shower instead which was fine. Overall a great place to stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to review your stay. We would love to have you back again. We have been working on updating the property since I bought it in 2013. There was a lot of catching up to do. The bath and the kitchen are slated for updates but I am finding it hard to get the right design to not take away the rustic island feel of the house. Right now we are on our dock project and hope to have a ladder that can be lifted. We did have stairs but that just encouraged it to be the most popular spot on the beach. That is why I suggest people bring swimming shoes until the dock reno was complete. The good thing is everyone of our guests who returns can expect things to get better and better. I will ask Channin what was wrong with the shower as I have not heard there was a problem at all. We did have to install a new toilet though. Hope to have you back. Everyone enjoyed your stay. Cheers, Suzanne

About Suzanne Boyce

The original owners Miss Marcia and her husband were on a road trip in the 70's that took them from their Aspen home down through the rugged backroads of Central America, they discovered the lovely island of Roatan.

Captivated by its lush tropical foliage on a hilly terrain and , crystal clear waters – the friendly, generous spirit of the locals – they bought a pristine property down the beach from what was then the only major dive operation on the island – Anthony's Key Resort.

That’s how the history of “Casa Cowee” was written. Miss Marcia passed the property on to her family and two years ago I visited and fell under it's spell. I am a Canadian from southern Ontario and fell in love with the Isle of Roatan, especially warm and natural Sandy Bay. You are part of a community here not a resort. So the next chapter in the history of Casa Cowee has begun. I know you will fall under it's spell also. Now that I have spent a good portion of a year here I know that Casa Cowee is totally unique. It is so easy to meet people, not just expats but islanders. I now have two guests who are back on the island with their families for extended stays so their kids get exposure to the real world outside of the bubble most of us live in. The kids are loving it with all their new friends, being part of the island community.

Suzanne Boyce purchased this estate in 2013

Why Suzanne Boyce chose Sandy Bay

There is no better place on Sandy Bay proper for 180 degree vista of the breathtaking waters and reef and dolphins. You are high off the beach giving you total privacy and the deck is the most popular spot for the sunset happy hours. You also have one acre of lush property surrounding you for privacy and lots of fruit trees such as lemon, lime, bananas, coconut, jack fruit, mango etc. Sandy Bay is a large area. But Casa Cowee is located on a sleepy stretch of sand that includes Anthony's Key, Myoka Lodge, the Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas mini dive resorts. They are just a couple of minutes walk down the beach and all have restaurants and bars. Then for that special evening The Myoka Lodge on our beach also has a stunning bar and great food for happy hours and views over their infinity pool. So no need to go further than our own little friendly community. But if there is a need to step it up a pace the West End is just a 10 min. taxi ride away. This is a dive hub along with, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. The nice thing about Roatan is that everyone on the island parties together, so a great island experience.

What makes this estate unique

What Casa Cowee is – and is not ...

Casa Cowee is not a 'plug and play' unit in a gated community. It is our cherished family home, designed by a renowned local architect who was a dear friend of the original owners – and who put his passion for the island into every facet of Casa Cowee’s signature design.

Another reason I chose Roatan was that it was well outside "hurricane alley" in the Caribbean. The last instance was in 2001 but because the second largest reef in the world surrounds the island it is rare to see waves hit the shore. Floridians and Texans head to our tropical island during the hurricane season.

One of the great beauties of Roatan and the Sandy Bay location is during the 'low' season you enjoy reduced rates but are there during their flowering and fruit season. We have a multitude of fruit trees on our property you can enjoy. I found that the weather is great and the temperature the same year round. Sandy Bay is a residential area so the same action year round. Much unlike the tourist areas of West Bay and West End.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I wanted to let you know what a terrific time we had. Your house is wonderful and Iris and Marvin are awesome … We only made it as far as Punta Gorda going east, but went to The Hole in the Wall (really neat) and did the Pig Roast at Bay Islands Beach Resort. Also enjoyed the Butterfly Garden, Botanical Gardens and Iguana Farm. The snorkeling in Roatan was the BEST I have ever experienced!! Thanks so much for letting us share your paradise.

Nearest Point of Interest
Casa Cowee
Car: not necessary

Great snorkelling and diving trips with the Octupus and Tranquil Seas dive operations just a 2 min walk down the beach. Stunning sites on the second largest coral reef in the world. There are two single kayaks and snorkelling equipment included in your rental. Some of the best bonefishing in the Caribbean is right down the beach from Casa Cowee and deep sea fishing. Our local fisherman Herbie has agreed to take care of our guests fishing trips. All you have to do is go down to our dock. There are some comments about our dock being over used by locals because it is such a great swimming dock. We have had to deal with the excessive use and it is no longer an issue.

There are four restaurants 1-2 minutes walk down the beach and two bars and many delicious local food restaurants. Our property manager can arrange meals to be brought in. There is a full medical clinic in a two minute walk including a recompression chamber.

Casual West End a 10 minute taxi ride away is loaded with restaurants, bars and shops. West Bay is the big beach with the large resorts and condos. Great for a visit if you want to people watch, parasail or just a change from tranquil Sandy Bay.
