Awesome and as described
I guess I didn't expect people to be staying in the unit below us, but other than that, the house was as expected. The location (farm and beach access) is amazing. The host (Mossy) was great. More than enough room for 4 adults and 3 kids. Would stay here again.

Disappointed
The property was in disrepair and very dated. The plumbing was not disclosed as being challanged for water and limited in accommodation. Other renters in cabins on property came to use bathroom/shower facilities. Toilet paper was deplenished and no supply available. Beds were worn out with depression in middle of mattresses. Electric lighting and outlets were inadequate. Great potential but rustic conditions were inadequately disclosed.

We loved Seaside Farm!
We loved Seaside Farm. It is rustic, not schmancy, like the working farm that it is. Mossy is delightful. We definitely plan to come back!

About the host

Hosted by Mossy Kilcher

Host profile image
Mossy Kilcher is the eldest of the family shown on Discovery's TV series, Alaska The Lasts Frontier and the aunt of pop singer Jewel. She was born and raised in the Alaska wilderness, and for the past 40 years has enjoyed sharing her lifestyle and home with guests from around the world. With her husband Cornelius, she raises beef cattle, Morgan horses, chickens (farm fresh eggs available!), grows raspberries, and makes her own hay. She is an artist, naturalist, photographer, plays the guitar, and produced Alaska's first female folk album in 1977, North Wind Calling. She continues her childhood passions--writing, composing songs, and recording and filming songbirds and their habitats. Mossy enjoys giving nature workshops, and sharing her knowledge of the local birds She created the DVD songbirds and their nests from footage recorded over the years, as well as a songbird CD, with her work available in local galleries. Above all, Mossy is an ardent advocate for the wilderness and the simple, shared lifestyle.

Why they chose this property

I grew up on a wilderness homestead with my 7 siblings, and when this old homestead near Homer came available I just had to own it and continue the farming tradition I grew up with. Its one of the few properties left along Kachemak Bay, with a trail down to the beach where you can beach comb for miles in solitude, watching the eagles soar overhead and the sea otters play out in the bay. I also make the meadows available to tent camping, and have cabins around for guests who enjoy simple, rustic Alaska style accomodations. Young workers come from around the world to learn organic farming skills and the Homer residents come every fall to pick raspberries in the 70 year old patch or attend "farm day" in summer with their children.

What makes this property unique

I love this old house because it reminds me--and everyone who visits--of my own childhood. It feels like grandma's farm.
Its nothing fancy, dont expect the best western hotel! Facilities are shared, and a bit rustic. I try to create an out of the way, down home, winnie the pooh playful feeling. I want people to have a retreat here, or mingle with people, enjoy solitude or wildlife and connect with your inner child, with nature and simpler times.

As an added bonus, I will be glad to organize a special tour of my family's cabin at the Kilcher Homestead. Advance notice is required.

The town of Homer is only 5 miles away, with art galleries, theatre, fancy restaurants, coffee shops, fishing opportunities, boat rides, and tours available.
