About this property

Outstanding Maine Boathouse, Blue Hill Peninsula, Acadia

Welcome to our unique Boat House at Tapley Farm on the coast of Maine. Consider this a time to renew and restore yourself as you experience this extraordinary natural environment in a truly comforting space along the shores of the Bagaduce River, deep water, in Maine this year. Outstanding views at the end of a dirt road, huge skies and the sounds of loons and seagulls amid the fragrance of salt air await to assure a deep and restful experience.
Dogs allowed, rules apply, never on furniture and $25 per day per dog, two maximum.

Unique and exceptionally beautiful restored historic Boathouse for a romantic getaway or a creative retreat. There is nothing like this in Down East Maine. A very unique property indeed. Blue Hill is our closest town but Brooksville remains the mystery of this region. Fantastic local food and serenity, all near Acadia, and Holbrook Island Sanctuary. One really enters into life as life has been, preserved and charming.
Imagine waking in a historic boathouse surrounded by water with stunning views of Castine, Islesboro and the Camden Hills. Awake to fresh eggs from our local farmers and take a walk up the hill to the main farm and visit the 35 acres of certified organic meadows in permaculture to encourage pollinators, bees and birds, wildlife and health.
Exceptionally charming, rustic and restored Boat House with deep water, sailboats and fishing boats floating by. Across from Castine Harbor and Maine Maritime Academy, races and the training ship in port make for a beautiful and authentic waterfront. Unlike isolated properties, the Boat House is part of the Wasson Tapley Farms, private yet historic family boathouse artifacts fill the cottage and make for a rich and unique experience on the coast.
The views include Castine, the head of Islesboro and the Camden Hills, vast and magical at sunset.
Fully appointed kitchen, dining area, deck, waterfront yard, Queen bed, heat stove, charm and more charm as the remodel kept so many things that were part of this working wharf. Lobster buoys, fishing nets, dress flags, oars, even a small dinghy are still part of the property and so are the histories of the sea captains and their wives who sailed from here when clipper ships were made on the shore.
Glamping in a restored and charming boathouse is a way to restore your life with energy as the water and sky surround the cottage and make nature feel so close.
Naturally, a gas grill is provided, all linens and everything you may need to make this your home for a time.
Come to the "Valley of the Stars" and see why we love it so much.
Acadia, Stonington and the Blue Hill Peninsula await your visits!

A peaceful, private place to escape.
We came to this beautiful place to celebrate our 40th anniversary and spent two weeks here. What a wildlife paradise. We saw the great blue heron almost daily as well as a pair of bald eagles and harbor seals. We enjoyed the privacy and magnificent sunsets every night. This was the most peaceful vacation we ever had. Thank you very much to Dick and Carol. We hope to be back soon.

A TRUE GEM!
What a glorious summer! Thank you Carol and Dick for our wonderful stay in the Boat House. You were warm and generous hosts and the Boat House was a gem, with it’s creative beautiful decor and perfect setting. It was like living in a little maritime museum. We loved all the bits and pieces of Tapley history that you cleverly incorporated into the design. It was rustic in just the right get-away-from-it-all way. Yet still so comfortable, inviting, and creatively beautiful. When we had friends stop by, the first thing they would say was, “Wow, this is great!” And all this was surrounded by the huge sweep of the magnificent Maine coast. The beach, the Bagaduce River, the view across to Castine and the distant mountains down Penobscot Bay. Heavenly! We can’t thank you enough for our lovely and special summer in your extraordinary little Boat House on the shore. See you next summer!

Lovely private place to stay.
The Boathouse is a very comfortable hideaway. The location is private and quiet with a lovely view. Even though it is small It has everything you need to enjoy a stay there. It made us think about downsizing and living smaller! You can walk the stoney beach when tide is out. We would definitely rent the Boathouse again if we're in the area.

About the host

We raised our children in NH but after they had grown we returned to the family farm where the Tapley Sea Captain's and their wives sailed to ports throughout the world. This Salt Water Farm, Certified Organic is a place of beauty and we love having family, friends and guests here to share in this natural beauty.
We love this farm, the water, sailing, family and traveling when we are not involved with so many local activities including theater, dance, music, great food, lectures, activism and making dinners for our friends!
We host guests and then we travel to places near and far, are restoring the perma culture of this farm and work on consulting and creative projects.
The farm is available to our guests to enjoy also and you may use the beach there, pick blueberries or help garden.

Why they chose this property

A totally beautiful and unique waterfront property. You just can't find a more beautiful place to visit! Handed down from generation to generation, we chose to move to Maine because of the incredible abundance of nature, creative people and natural beauty. We invite you to come to see what we mean, on the coast in a most precious place, the Boathouse!

A totally unusual farm/waterfront where we live and work and share this amazing place. Unusual because it is directly in the water, just where a boathouse should be and the beach is right here with some fishermen and locals coming by to launch a boat, clam or enjoy the sunset. The boathouse is now restored for Glamping and comfort and is on private land surrounded by the most beautiful western sunsets and views of Camden, Castine and Islesboro.
The farm is Certified Organic and is in a meadow restoration for permaculture, flora and fauna. Unusual for the openness of a historic saltwater farm, still in the same family, it is truly a place of beauty. Restoring it has been wonderful for the historic preservation and the opportunity to offer this place to others.
Unusual for the beauty and accessibility to launching a kayak, clamming, blueberries in the fields or bird watching.
Built so long ago, the place was picked for its waterfront and deep water.

What makes this property unique

Close to the best Pizza in Maine, open mic, Bach Festival, Stonington Opera, David's Folly Farm, Four Season's, The Nearing Center, Holbrook Island, Blue Hill and Kneisel Hall, trails, restaurants and art. The coziness and sound of water, the open skies and fresh air billowing into the boathouse happen here because of the location to the water and the openness of the farmland surrounding it all. The cottage is filled with historic memorabilia from the families seafaring life with photos and books full of life on the sea.
The history, the beach, open sky, fantastic views and the cozy and comfortable cottage are unique on Penobscot Bay.
