About this property

Ocean Temple: Oceanfront, A/C, 500 ac.State Land in Backyard!

Graciously appointed Ocean Temple offers inspiring Pacific Ocean views, sunrises, sunsets, and lava fields spanning for miles across state land, to give you a wonderfully peaceful Hawaii experience that will leave you relaxed and rejuvenated.

Ocean Temple is truly a unique and special place to land in Hawaii! The wild and dramatic setting, beautiful architecture, and luxuriously well-appointed amenities will offer a wonderful vacation setting for you.

A private black sand beach is located a few hundred yards away... a perfect place to enjoy the year round sunrises and sunsets, watch the humpback whales breaching during the winter months, and its a perfect outdoor yoga setting.

This property was once a Buddhist's Retreat Center, and the original home served as lodging for the visiting Rinpoche. We strive to carry on the sacred sanctuary vibe here, and we expect our guests to do the same.

Ocean Temple is 1,100 sq ft, and enjoys an open floor plan (only the bathroom is enclosed). A pair of 12' wide and 10' wide sliding glass doors look out to the ocean and backyard gardens during the day and the star and planet studded night sky at night. From the covered lanai, your day time views are blessed with the blue ocean, organic gardens and coconut trees.

A king size bed with a memory foam mattresses pad, 100% cotton bedding, thick bath towels, gorgeous Mahogany wood trim accents, solid mahogany doors, and expansive picture windows looking out to the natural setting surrounding the property.

You will enjoy listening to the sounds of the ocean day and night! Plus a night sky that is so full of stars and the milk way galaxy.

Ocean Temple is located on the main floor of a 2-story house and is fully contained with its own entrance and amenities. Bali Temple, VRBO #285160, is located on the top floor of the house and is fully contained with its own entrance. Cottage at the Ocean, VRBO# 654541 is located in the separate cottage next door. There is a laundry room off of the house with its own entrance that all guests have access to. Contact me to learn about special rates when renting more than one of these properties at the same time.

All units are ideal for 2 people. Guests come to retreat from the hustle and bustle of their worlds, to deeply relax, recharge, and renew themselves amidst the beautiful natural setting that surrounds us. All guests are asked to maintain this sanctuary environment when on the property.

There are many spectacular local attractions sites to visit during your stay: visit Kehena Beach just down the road, a gorgeous black sand beach where you may be lucky to swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins in the morning hours (clothing at Kehena is optional!). Enjoy an oceanside hike at McKenzie state park. Cruise the whole enchanting Red Road, and take in the sights of wild and lush jungle, lava fields, and ocean cliffs for picnics and whale watching. Check out the numerous Volcano Touring activities such as: Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, Lava Hikes, and the Geothermal Heated Hot Ponds.

Experience an abundance of food shopping for the true tastes of Hawaii: Our local farm to table Farmers Markets offer you abundant selections of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and unique gift items at either Maku'u Market in Pahoa (Sunday morning), or Uncle Robert's Wednesday Night Music and Saturday morning market, located next to the Kaimu Korner Store (all of your basic needs can be found here, open 7am to 9 pm), located just ½ mile away from Ocean Temple!

In addition to the markets, acquaint yourself with the Island flora with a tour at the Botanical Gardens, sightsee and explore numerous waterfalls, Whale Watch from the lanai, indulge yourself with many dining options in Pahoa and dance it all off at Ecstatic Dance on Sunday mornings at Kalani, and then join the Drum Circle on Sunday afternoons at Kehena Beach. There are numerous Yoga Classes, Pilates Classes, and massage therapists ready to treat you!

Dining options from Ocean Temple are numerous: We have an authentic Ava Bar down at Uncle Robert's, serving up the local and relaxing Kava beverage, with other various food options next door at Uncle's Marketplace. Kalani Honua is 4 miles down the Red Road for grab and go. 8 miles up the road is Pahoa Town, with numerous options in
Thai, Sushi, Mexican, Kaleo’s Bar and Grill, coffee shops, etc. Hilo is 27 miles for many more choices.

When my visitors depart Ocean Temple, they feel refreshed, invigorated, and much more vibrant then when they arrived. The air along our coastline has been measured to be the cleanest in the United States! The lush greenery and scenic coastline areas are inspiring.

I look forward to your visit at Ocean Temple…see you soon!

Awesome location!
This is a second time we rent this place! Nothing beats stepping outside, crossing backyard onto roped lava field for a short walt to the ocean! Interior is spacious, furniture is a little antique, but appliances work well. Couple things to note: cooking options are a microwave and induction stove, anything you bring with you needs to work with them. There is no swimming beach you can walk to, shore is rocky, but very beautiful. Looking forward to staying here again.

Magical stay at the Ocean Temple
The Ocean Temple near Kalapana is an incredibly beautiful and relaxing place to stay! Spacious, open-concept room within a short walk to the waves crashing against the lava/black sand beach…very unique location with majestic sunrise/sunset. Too many adjectives? Check it out and judge for yourself…bring a thesaurus!

Honeymoon by the Ocean
My partner and I stayed at this house to finish off our three weeks in Hawaii. It was comfortable, clean, and well laid out. Communication with the host was easy and they were very thoughtful.

Lava Trip
The lava cliffs in the back yard to the ocean were beautiful! There was no way to swim there of course, but amazing to look at. There was no stove or oven. They had removed the stove and put a tiny cooktop on top of a mini fridge. I was very disappointed because we were there for a week and normally I cook every meal. I couldn’t this trip. I bought crab legs and it took 2 hours to get water boiling. Also there is no tv, which is fine with me because I don’t watch much of it. The bed’s middle support popped out right when I sat on it. So the bed was caving in till my husband crawled under the bed to screw it in. But it happened again.

Kalapana Is. Paradise
I cant think of a more charming part of the Big Island than the Kalapana coast. On a clear day, a sunny day, it literally sparkles like diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds. Our host was very helpful, the rental was charming, the neighbors we incountered were friendly.

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city!
I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my arrival, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 300’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean!
I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live!
Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.

Why they chose this property

Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location!
Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. What makes this property unique

A natural setting as dramatic as that which Ocean Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano is truly invigorating.
Walking along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Ocean Temple will give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...uninhabited, wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid deep blue ocean and skies, against the jet black lava, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night.
At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!
