Overview

About the property

Privacy and luxury home and pool in the rainforest perched above the Pacific.

About Balcón Ballena:

A newly-built romantic very private home and pool perched 250m above Uvita offering mountain breezes, mesmerizing views of the Pacific coast, the iconic Whales Tail and award-winning Ballena Marine National Park.

Accessible via 4-wheel drive SUV 2 km up a well-maintained road, Balcón Ballena is in the rainforest amongst monkeys, toucans, parrots, and the sights and the sounds of the jungle. A delightful base for exploring / enjoying the area.

Balcón Ballena is rented exclusively to couples.

Balcón Ballena provides a captivating perch from which a couple can enjoy broad tropical coastal views and the diverse nature and natural beauty of Costa Rica. The surrounding jungle is alive with toucans, aracari, parrots, hummingbirds, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, pezotes and sloths which can be seen right from your terrace.

The property has a lower and upper level with the lower level dedicated for parking one car off of the road behind a privacy wall equipped with a manually sliding wooden gate. From the parking-area you are just steps up to the house, terrace, patio and infinity pool.

The house was built oriented toward the best views and integrated into the mountain ridge. Balcón Ballena was designed to shade guests from the tropical sun and take advantage of the cooling mountain breezes you don't find down at sea-level. Most folks find they do not need air conditioning up here however the master bedroom suite has a remote controlled wall-mounted air-conditioner for your comfort just in case. Ceiling fans, Pacific and mountain breezes and the infinity pool will keep you cool.

Balcón Ballena has been thoughtfully constructed and furnished to highlight local craftsmanship, Costa Rican woods, stone, and inspired by the natural beauty and indigenous art of the country.

Balcón Ballena offers a well-equipped kitchen with full-size refrigerator / freezer, coffee maker, toaster, oven and an island-mounted gas stove from where you can cook while enjoying a spectacular ocean view out over the infinity pool.

Our water comes from a mountain spring tested for purity by our water association. You can drink water at Balcón Ballena. If you prefer bottled water, we provide a container from the supermarket to get you started.

Balcón Ballena has two full bathrooms that include showers with river rock walls. The master bedroom shower is a private outdoor shower. Showering with jungle views is a very refreshing experience if you’ve never tried it. Maybe you’ll see a toucan or a monkey!

The most attractive feature of Balcón Ballena are sights of the ever-changing interaction of the sun, ocean, sky and jungle. You will begin to feel the rhythm of the tide throughout the day as the Whales Tail emerges at low tide and sinks beneath the water surface at high tide. It is a spectacular place to relax, take in the rainforest and watch the surf breaks down below on Chaman Beach.

If you visit during one of Uvita’s world-famous Whale Festivals, on clear days one can use binoculars from the terrace to see whale watching boats cluster near whales off the shore. We've even seen whales spouting from the terrace of Balcón Ballena!

Balcón Ballena has an infinity pool for cooling down and relaxing. The pictures say it all.

An awesome BBQ grill/smoker is ready to use. Please only use it out on the graveled area next to the pool deck. Please never use the grill inside of the house or underneath the terrace roof. See if you can find the design somewhere else in the house : )

Balcón Ballena offers Wifi service beamed directly from the ISP’s antennae in Uvita. Generally, it provides enough bandwidth to support streaming services however like all utilities here in the rugged jungles of Costa Rica, when you manage your expectations, you’ll probably be satisfied.

Cell phone service is also very good at Balcón Ballena due to our location on the mountain, we have direct line of sight to the cellular tower antennae downtown in Uvita. Good cell signals are available from several mobile carriers at the house.

Guests have full access to Balcón Ballena. The only exception is the locked owner’s closet. It's a perfect place for a romantic getaway surrounded by the rugged nature of Costa Rica.

The property has lower and upper levels. The lower level is dedicated for parking your car off of the road behind a privacy wall equipped with a manually sliding high wooden gate. From the parking-area it is just steps up to the house with a covered terrace, patio and infinity pool.

Interaction with Guests:

We have limited interactions with our guests. Our guests interact primarily with our friend and site manager, Loren, who lives just down the road and who is your local contact and host. We are all available by phone or text if you need anything or have questions to make your Costa Rica adventure memorable. We can also help you plan excursions and activities, from advice to booking the trips - just let us know.

The Neighborhood:

Balcón Ballena offers stunning vistas of the Bahia coast including the Whales Tail, Isla Ballena and Isla Cano some 60km off the coast. On a clear day you could see all the way down the Osa Peninsula to Drake Bay and Punta Rio Claro National Wildlife Refuge.

The beaches of Uvita and the surrounding area are part of Costa Rica's only marine national park. Marino Ballena National Park also hosts the annual Whale & Dolphin Festival. During these periods hundreds of whales return to Uvita from the Southern and Northern Hemisphere to mate. Balcón Ballena offers a mountain view over this coastal area.

"The National Marine Park is recognized nationally and internationally for the annual visitation of different species of cetaceans such as the humpback whale, pilot whale, bryde whale, fake killer whales; Plus three resident species of dolphins including bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and spinner dolphins, as well as several species of sea turtles - hawksbill turtle, green turtle, parrot turtle."

Our mountain has a wonderful waterfall called Cascada Verde about 500m down the road. The restaurant and bar at Cascada Verde have a friendly staff, excellent seafood tacos.

The town of Uvita is flourishing with restaurants for every budget, from fine dining to modest family places (called "sodas") offering excellent seafood (of course) and typical Costa Rican fare. Uvita has many bars, groceries, surf shops, clothing stores, souvenir shops and tour operators. We have several bank branches, pharmacies, doctor and dentist offices. Major car rental agencies are here, plus a new police station, new bus station, and is just 45 minutes from two regional airports (one North, one South) and 20 minutes to the regional hospital.

There is so much to do in the area. We have prepared a folder of activities and maps for you and have more information in the Balcón Ballena Guest Guide. Our site manager, Loren, can recommend many activities and has been known to find good discounts for Balcón Ballena guests on various excursions in the area.

Access to Balcón Ballena:

You'll need a 4-wheel drive SUV with a low gear setting to travel up the mountain road. These vehicles are common and easily rented in Costa Rica due to the rugged roads we have here.

Pura vida!

About Mike & Eva DiLascio

Hi there! We are Mike & Eva. We love nature, travel, hosting and building friendships with people from all over. Proud parents of two grown sons. Some of our favorite places are near the mountains and the sea, in cities and jungles.

Mike & Eva DiLascio purchased this house in 2015

Why Mike & Eva DiLascio chose Bahía Ballena

We bought the land in 2008 after our first trip to Costa Rica. We feel in love with its most spectacular view down into the rainforest, the valley and the broad views of the Pacific coast. In 2015 we built the house for future retirement and once finished thought it would be perfect for couples interested in a very private romantic base for their Costa Rica adventures. Even though it is very private, getting to the beaches, restaurants and activities of the Costa Ballena is a breeze.

What makes this house unique

Every single guest remarks about nature they see here. It is the most exciting experience to be surrounded by such intense nature. The sounds and sights of the jungle, the sea and sky almost overload the senses. Most folks who stay at Balcón Ballena have experienced the heat and humidity at sea-level. Up here, the temperature is always cooler. It's always cooler in your own private infinity pool as well : ) We are available by phone or text if you need anything or have questions to make your Costa Rica adventure memorable. We can also help you plan excursions and activities, from advice to booking the trips - just let us know. Pura Vida!

There isn't enough space to write all the cool things so I'll just hit the high points:

The view- Unreal, we couldn't stop watching the view from sun up to sunset, it was amazing. and if you got tired of sitting and watching you could get in the pool and watch.

The house - nothing missing. They didn't skimp on anything! Towels for days, washer and dryer. We had a hiccup in the stove wouldn't work, which leads me to the next high point.

Loren - he is the care taker and the guy who knows everybody and everything. First off , he met us at the grocery store and led us up to the house, got us settled and disappeared. On the second day my wife decided to bake something. The stove wouldn't light, I trouble shoot it, then called Lauren, he grabbed a propane tank and drove right up. We worked on it and decided it was beyond our ability to fix. Which left Bridget's flour-less chocolate cake uncooked. He offered and took the cake down to his house, his wife cooked it and he brought it back to us. That's Service! And he does know everyone in the area, great expat community.

We'll be back.

You will need a 4 wheel drive, no kidding, but worth the effort.

Owner's Response: Dave and Bridget, We are so glad you had a great time at Balcón Ballena! Thanks for the wonderful review. Apologies about the oven hiccup. Loren mentioned that he and Nancy were able to "save Bridget's cake"! What a story, and you are right, Loren is the guy who knows everyone and everything. All of our guests seem to love him and we have many other stories from our guests about things Loren has do to help make their holidays enjoyable. We appreciate you letting other potential guests know that a 4WD vehicle is necessary - not optional - to get up to our place. Thanks again and please return to Balcón Ballena anytime! Pura Vida, Mike & Eva

A little slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Amazing private villa nestled in the hills above Uvita with stunning views of the ocean. My wife and I spent a week here for our honeymoon and loved every minute of it. Make sure you have 4WD! You will not make it up the mountain without it. We rented a 4WD vehicle from Vamos and it died on our first trip up. Thankfully Loren was there to help and arranged for a new vehicle to be delivered.

Go eat at Soda Ranchito Dona Maria for cheap, authentic food. You won't regret it. Also, go on a private guided hike at Santa Lucia Falls - phenomenal 4 hour hike to 4 different waterfalls with cliff diving and a homemade lunch at the end. Other than that, ask Loren as he is always incredibly helpful and full of ideas (dinner sunset catamaran cruises, private massages at the villa, etc). I can't say enough great things about Balcon Ballena and Loren. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful home nestled in the jungle

  • 5 of 5

The road up to the property did not prepare us for what was waiting for us behind the gate! The steep incline (you MUST have 4x4 on your vehicle) took us a few minutes away from town and dropped us in honestly one of the most beautiful places we have stayed.

The view from the patio/pool area was out of a postcard. The pictures on this site are great, but the reality is so much more than you can capture on film. The house is tucked into a jungle lot with a perfect open frame of palm and kapok trees that opens up to a perfect view of the Whale's Tail and blue ocean in front of you. The serenity pool ended up featuring in most of our vacation pictures because it captured the spirit of the property so well; A quiet, secluded place to relax in.

The house itself was equipped wonderfully for us to cook in. Propane stove with full sets of good pots and pans, full size refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster and blender. I can't tell you how thrilled we were to have a blender! Blended fresh fruit drinks by the pool became part of our days right away! The kitchen was also stocked with some essentials and "leave behinds" like salt, pepper, and an assortment of other spices and some cooking oil.

The master bedroom (with its attached outdoor shower!) was wonderful. Soft, comfortable bedding and a view that makes you happy to be awake. There is an indoor shower in the second bathroom for indoor days as well.

Security is always on my radar on holidays, and the Balcon Ballena made me feel exceptionally secure. The road up to the property has a security guard from 6pm-6am, the gate to the property itself can be secured closed, and the standard bars on the windows you see at other properties were replaced by beautiful swooping leaf motif sliding/locking doors which provided the same level of security. We slept every night with the windows open, but the sliding iron art/doors locked (from the inside) and never worried at all.

Loren, the property manager was wonderful. He was available if we had questions and offered many ideas and connections for tours and other interesting things to do in the area.

We decided last minute to stay an extra day because it was so wonderful there and Mike the owner was very accommodating and superb to deal with.

There is so much to do in the area, but we ended up staying around the house quite a bit - it was THAT lovely. We are having a hard time adjusting to real life back in Canada and can't wait to go back!
