A newly-built romantic very private home and pool perched 250m above Uvita offering mountain breezes, mesmerizing views of the Pacific coast, the iconic Whales Tail and award-winning Ballena Marine National Park.
Accessible via 4-wheel drive SUV 2 km up a well-maintained road, Balcón Ballena is in the rainforest amongst monkeys, toucans, parrots, and the sights and the sounds of the jungle. A delightful base for exploring / enjoying the area.
Balcón Ballena is rented exclusively to couples.
Balcón Ballena provides a captivating perch from which a couple can enjoy broad tropical coastal views and the diverse nature and natural beauty of Costa Rica. The surrounding jungle is alive with toucans, aracari, parrots, hummingbirds, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, pezotes and sloths which can be seen right from your terrace.
The property has a lower and upper level with the lower level dedicated for parking one car off of the road behind a privacy wall equipped with a manually sliding wooden gate. From the parking-area you are just steps up to the house, terrace, patio and infinity pool.
The house was built oriented toward the best views and integrated into the mountain ridge. Balcón Ballena was designed to shade guests from the tropical sun and take advantage of the cooling mountain breezes you don't find down at sea-level. Most folks find they do not need air conditioning up here however the master bedroom suite has a remote controlled wall-mounted air-conditioner for your comfort just in case. Ceiling fans, Pacific and mountain breezes and the infinity pool will keep you cool.
Balcón Ballena has been thoughtfully constructed and furnished to highlight local craftsmanship, Costa Rican woods, stone, and inspired by the natural beauty and indigenous art of the country.
Balcón Ballena offers a well-equipped kitchen with full-size refrigerator / freezer, coffee maker, toaster, oven and an island-mounted gas stove from where you can cook while enjoying a spectacular ocean view out over the infinity pool.
Our water comes from a mountain spring tested for purity by our water association. You can drink water at Balcón Ballena. If you prefer bottled water, we provide a container from the supermarket to get you started.
Balcón Ballena has two full bathrooms that include showers with river rock walls. The master bedroom shower is a private outdoor shower. Showering with jungle views is a very refreshing experience if you’ve never tried it. Maybe you’ll see a toucan or a monkey!
The most attractive feature of Balcón Ballena are sights of the ever-changing interaction of the sun, ocean, sky and jungle. You will begin to feel the rhythm of the tide throughout the day as the Whales Tail emerges at low tide and sinks beneath the water surface at high tide. It is a spectacular place to relax, take in the rainforest and watch the surf breaks down below on Chaman Beach.
If you visit during one of Uvita’s world-famous Whale Festivals, on clear days one can use binoculars from the terrace to see whale watching boats cluster near whales off the shore. We've even seen whales spouting from the terrace of Balcón Ballena!
Balcón Ballena has an infinity pool for cooling down and relaxing. The pictures say it all.
An awesome BBQ grill/smoker is ready to use. Please only use it out on the graveled area next to the pool deck. Please never use the grill inside of the house or underneath the terrace roof. See if you can find the design somewhere else in the house : )
Balcón Ballena offers Wifi service beamed directly from the ISP’s antennae in Uvita. Generally, it provides enough bandwidth to support streaming services however like all utilities here in the rugged jungles of Costa Rica, when you manage your expectations, you’ll probably be satisfied.
Cell phone service is also very good at Balcón Ballena due to our location on the mountain, we have direct line of sight to the cellular tower antennae downtown in Uvita. Good cell signals are available from several mobile carriers at the house.
Guests have full access to Balcón Ballena. The only exception is the locked owner’s closet. It's a perfect place for a romantic getaway surrounded by the rugged nature of Costa Rica.
The property has lower and upper levels. The lower level is dedicated for parking your car off of the road behind a privacy wall equipped with a manually sliding high wooden gate. From the parking-area it is just steps up to the house with a covered terrace, patio and infinity pool.
Interaction with Guests:
We have limited interactions with our guests. Our guests interact primarily with our friend and site manager, Loren, who lives just down the road and who is your local contact and host. We are all available by phone or text if you need anything or have questions to make your Costa Rica adventure memorable. We can also help you plan excursions and activities, from advice to booking the trips - just let us know.
Balcón Ballena offers stunning vistas of the Bahia coast including the Whales Tail, Isla Ballena and Isla Cano some 60km off the coast. On a clear day you could see all the way down the Osa Peninsula to Drake Bay and Punta Rio Claro National Wildlife Refuge.
The beaches of Uvita and the surrounding area are part of Costa Rica's only marine national park. Marino Ballena National Park also hosts the annual Whale & Dolphin Festival. During these periods hundreds of whales return to Uvita from the Southern and Northern Hemisphere to mate. Balcón Ballena offers a mountain view over this coastal area.
"The National Marine Park is recognized nationally and internationally for the annual visitation of different species of cetaceans such as the humpback whale, pilot whale, bryde whale, fake killer whales; Plus three resident species of dolphins including bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and spinner dolphins, as well as several species of sea turtles - hawksbill turtle, green turtle, parrot turtle."
Our mountain has a wonderful waterfall called Cascada Verde about 500m down the road. The restaurant and bar at Cascada Verde have a friendly staff, excellent seafood tacos.
The town of Uvita is flourishing with restaurants for every budget, from fine dining to modest family places (called "sodas") offering excellent seafood (of course) and typical Costa Rican fare. Uvita has many bars, groceries, surf shops, clothing stores, souvenir shops and tour operators. We have several bank branches, pharmacies, doctor and dentist offices. Major car rental agencies are here, plus a new police station, new bus station, and is just 45 minutes from two regional airports (one North, one South) and 20 minutes to the regional hospital.

Access to Balcón Ballena:
You'll need a 4-wheel drive SUV with a low gear setting to travel up the mountain road. These vehicles are common and easily rented in Costa Rica due to the rugged roads we have here.
