About this property

Historic Home in the Rattlesnake

This well-maintained, turn-of-the-(20th)-century farmhouse is on Rattlesnake Drive, convenient to the Rattlesnake Market and Cafe and Rattlesnake Creek. There is a privacy fence and driveway. There are four bedrooms with Queen-size beds and three bathrooms. Two main floor bedrooms each have adjoining bathrooms, and two upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom.
The kitchen has been recently remodeled. A spacious, enclosed sun porch looks onto a large back yard that abuts an apple orchard and Mount Jumbo. The Rattlesnake Wilderness Area is a few miles to the north, and downtown Missoula and the University of Montana are ten minutes away.
Local attractions include Ten Spoon Winery in the Upper Rattlesnake, with public tastings on Thursdays-Sunday; Snowbowl ski area, 12 miles northwest of town; and hiking and cross-country ski trails throughout the region. Blue ribbon trout streams can be found in every direction, with State and Tribal fishing licenses available at most sporting goods stores in Missoula.
Originally a working apple orchard and one of the first homes in the Rattlesnake, the property is at the base of Mount Jumbo, which is protected from development by the efforts of the Five Valleys Land Trust. Wildlife is plentiful in the area, especially deer, but there are also seasonal bears and occasional evidence of mountain lions.
This house was a well-loved family home for many decades. As a vacation rental, we are fully licensed with the City of Missoula, Missoula County, and the State of Montana.

really neat historic place, quiet side of Missoula
A tidy step back in time, neat historic home. But with modern conveniences to get you by. We really enjoyed watching the deer from the veranda.

Delightful
Lots of room in this quaint place. The front street is a bit noisy but it didn’t bother us as the back of the property is a massive lovely yard that is quiet and peaceful with a lovely view.

Sisters Road Trip!
We loved the old house and decor, especially after learning a bit of the family history and how the house was passed down. Four bedrooms in a variety of locations helped us accommodate early and late risers, plus we appreciated all of the table options and dish choices for entertaining. Daily visits from the deer never got old, and one evening we were treated to a male turkey’s courtship of the nearby hen. We took advantage of the wonderful fireplace at both ends of the day. A perfect house for a wonderful trip!

Here to work
We are in Missoula installing exhibit furniture we built for a local insect zoo. Staying at this property has been lovely. Very comfortable with beautiful views all around us. The property manager has been very accommodating. I will definitely stay here again.

We live in the Rattlesnake valley, nearby. This house has been in John's family for three generations.

Why they chose this property

This property is owned by descendants of Charles and Mary Leaphart. Charles Leaphart was dean of the UM law school until 1954.

What makes this property unique

This property is a bit of country in the middle of the well-populated Rattlesnake Valley. It is secluded from the main road by a privacy fence, and directly across from a wonderful little market and cafe, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and has beer and wine available. This is the only commercial establishment nearby. The back of the house looks out onto a large lawn and apple orchard, with unobstructed views to the top of MT Jumbo. Deer and other wildlife are plentiful.
