About this property

Cabin in the Big South Fork/Pickett State Park Area. No pets, horses or ATV's

Welcome to Fall 2023. Changes this season is a new layout in the new addition room. plus, the entire cabin has fresh stain and looks well maintained.

The Big South Fork/Pickett State Park is an excellent area to get away from it all. Outside of hiking to the Twin Arches, most trails are sparsely utilized. There are not many restaurants in the area, so the kitchen is a focal point to enjoy after a day's hike. The kitchen at Hikers Hideaway is stocked with cooking gear better than most to account for the distance to town. For example, there is a crock pot to cook while you hike. There is a six-quart Instant Pot to give a try. I will attempt to block out an entire day after guest leave to eliminate "turns". A turn is out at 11 and next guest in at 3. Spacing out guest arrivals ensures the cleaning lady time to address extra cleaning steps and processes. Please plan to enjoy the outdoors in the Big South Fork this season.

Hikers Hideaway is a 760 Square Foot cabin with front and back covered decks (hammock hooks!) on 2 acres in Spruce Creek Acres. Both front porch and back deck have sitting arrangements. Located off Highway 297 between the Bandy Creek Park Headquarters for Big South Fork and the Pickett State Park Visitor Center on Highway 154, this cabin offers the opportunity to access hiking trails in both Parks. In addition, the Pickett-Pogue International Dark Sky Park is nearby making this hideaway convenient for astronomers. I am sorry to say the cabin does NOT provide any type of horse facilities (No HORSES) plus NO ATV usage (or side by sides) are allowed in Spruce Creek Acres or at Hikers Hideaway. In addition, the cabin is NOT pet friendly (NO DOGS) and of course is SMOKE FREE.
However, hikers, naturalists, canoeist, astronomers, photographers plus anyone looking to enjoy attractions and events in the Big South Fork region will find "Hikers Hideaway" cabin and its location ideal. Once booked, the owner can provide hiking advice to some of the off the beaten path arches, waterfalls and landforms this unique area offers.

The one topic of concern is keeping up with garbage. There is a new bear proof garbage "cage" that holds a 20 gallon trash can. Please do not over fill garbage as the cleaning lady struggles with heavy to lift bags and unruly trash. There is a typical 12 gallon can in the kitchen. It is recommended to eliminate excessive packaging prior to arrival. Any trash bags left outside often result in animal issues with ensuing mess. A mess caused by improper garbage handling can result in a damage deposit charge. This is the reason for the new bear proof garbage.

Pickett State park has recycling near the campground dumpster. Guest with multiple day visits can arrange a pickup schedule prior to the duration of your stay. Please do not call at the last minute. Which is to say please plan ahead to keep the garbage from being a negative. There is a dump station at 2075 Pickett Park Highway and 515 Fairgrounds Road in Jamestown. The Pickett Park Highway dump station is open on Tuesday/Thursday and Saturdays.

It was a great cabin that we enjoyed while visiting Big South Fork and Pickett Park. The only thing we missed was a hot tub tfor our muscles after all of the hiking.

Great basecamp for hiking
The property is perfectly located for hiking in Big South Fork and other nearby parks. The host provided specific hiking suggestions in response to our expressed interest, including books and maps, and the cabin was filled with resources for hiking and for learning the history of the area. The cabin is well and comfortably furnished and equipped. We enjoyed our stay and will be happy to stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by Keith Garnes

Host profile image
Keith has been hiking the Big South Fork area since 1990 and still is finding new reasons to be enthused. As Vice President of the Friends of Pickett State Park Board of Directors, he would like to promote the many attributes of Pickett State Park, the new Pogue Creek Canyon Wilderness Area and the Pickett-Pogue International Dark Sky Park. Keith does presentations about arches along Tennessee's trails at the Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge. Once cleared to chat with Keith, please have your map and hiking guide ready; as he will offer advise on the off the beaten path wonders of the area from the Twin Arches (ask about the third arch there named Step Child) to the new arches (Circle Bar and Kill Deer) along the Pogue Canyon to Canyon trail.

Why they chose this property

Few cabins are closer to the Twin Arches in the Big South Fork plus the wonders of Pickett CCC Memorial State Park.

What makes this property unique

Hammock hooks on both decks so pack your hammock. The driveway is circular and easy to navigate. Great motorcycle roads in the area and the owner has a H-D Pan America Special. Ask Keith about road tours or hikes.
