About this property

Cozy Cottage at the River - Historic CampMeeting Cottage, 1 Block from River

Only one block from the water, set high on the Island Heights bluff, this original “L-Style” Victorian historic camp meeting cottage was built in 1883. It stands today as one of the only original camp meeting cottages left in Island Heights with very few architectural modifications. This home was featured in the NJ Star Ledger for it’s restoration, and is truly a one-of-a-kind gem.

Restored to its former glory, this two-story cottage has new and modern upgrades, but retains all of its original charm. It including original pine paneling, stained-glass windows, custom builtins, board and batten siding, winding staircase, and hardwood floors. Enjoy the river breezes from the the wrap-around porch, take a walk down to the promenade to watch the sailboats go by and see our famous Island Heights sunsets. Across the street, is the historic camp meeting grounds, which is now a park with a pavilion, perfect for playing a game of frisbee, a picnic or watching the sailboats go by.

There is walkable access to sailing, boating, crabbing, fishing.

Walk to our bay beach!

Or take a trip over the bridge only minutes away to Seaside for many Ocean beaches, amusement rides, or Island Beach State Park for a relaxing beach and wildlife experience.

The brand new farm-house style kitchen includes all stainless steel appliances: microwave, stove/oven, dishwasher, european refrigerator, Keurig, tea kettle, and plenty of cooking utensils for a night in. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs, the master bedroom includes a queen-size bed with under-the-bed storage, and Cable TV. The second bedroom features an original-style stained glass window, a trundle/day bed with two twin size mattresses, and a closet for your belongings. The bathroom features a 1940’s style bathtub, with black and white retro-tile.

The house has Central A/C!

Enjoy the fenced in yard for an out-door picnic, or an afternoon game of croquet. We also have a gas grill!

A welcoming place to call home
If you enjoy all the nuances of staying in a historic home, this is the place to be. The woodwork, ceilings and stairs are beautifully restored. The new front door and windows fit perfectly. It’s sweetly decorated. Bathroom downstairs has all you need and the kitchen is inviting to hang out and cook. Queen bedroom is cozy and bright, the second bedroom has a trundle bed suitable for small children. The location is on a sometimes busy street weekdays but so close to the Toms River with its boardwalk and gazebo, fun watching all that crabbing, Bay and the beaches. Beth and Brian are super friendly and responsive. Front porch great for coffee, side yard with table and chairs. Nice gas BBQ. All you need!

Island heights cottage
Step back in time in a quaint cottage a block from the Toms River. Has modern kitchen and necessary amenities. We loved sitting on the front porch and watching local life.

Island heights, june 2019.
This is a lovely house situated in a lovely area and only a couple of minute's walk to the lake, a nice quiet area. The house has everything you need, the bathroom is downstairs but wasn't a problem for us, overall I would highly recommend this property.

About the host

Hosted by Beth Slocum

Host profile image
Beth and Brian are artists and musicians, avid history buffs, love home restoration, and their town of Island Heights. Living here for over 10 years, they have committed themselves to preserving the history of the community, and enjoying their friends and family.

Why they chose this property

This house was under severe disrepair when they purchased it. While many wanted to knock it down to build a larger shore home, they saw historical and nostalgic potential in restoring it, and making it a piece of history they could share with their friends, family, and others.
