About this property

Gorgeous Pet-friendly Boutique Ranch ! Next to skiing, fishing, rafting

Spacious, sunny, elegant home on 5 acres, nestled next to a 1000-acre nature preserve! A horse-lover's dream, convenient to our polo fields! Gorgeous scenery, big barn, pastures, Wi-Fi, pastures, pond. Enjoy seclusion with easy access to Aspen. Hike/ride into wilderness in 5 minutes!

Spectacular views, ample wildlife, watch the hawks, doves and deer from the patio. The "wall of windows" in the living room brings the outdoors in to you, with reflecting pond, aspen trees and green pastures at your fingertips. The rustic french provencale kitchen with oversize porcelain sink adds to the charm of the living space. Create your own gourmet event—perfect for entertaining!

Your hosts are elsewhere on property, and tend to the miniature goats, chickens, beehives, irrigation/ranch upkeep, but unless you have specific requests, you will rarely see them.

Ask us about gold medal fishing, white water rafting, mountain biking, hiking, horseback trail rides, the Aspen ideas Festival, food and wine, the rodeo, and John Denver’s wonderful nature preserve Windstar, right next door!

(Note: If you are looking for a Marriot /antiseptic/ central AC set-up, head elsewhere. This is a ranch, with wildlife, domestic animals, birds, flying insects, and nature. Think of it as the best “Glamping” experience you could have.)

In winter, skiing at Snowmass is 19 minutes away, and winter hiking in a beautiful nature preserve is 5 minutes away!

Well-behaved dogs and children are welcome! (If you are leaving doggies for the day, please bring a crate for them)

Cool and quirky
The architecture and setting of this home is amazing. It comes with 2 very friendly goats and dog. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it, if you are looking for something unique and off the beaten path.

Fun and unique house
My family had a great stay at Painted Pony Ranch! We loved the warm atmosphere, the sweeping views from the living room, and the close proximity to skiing at Snowmass…and the goats! The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were very comfortable, and we enjoyed having movie night and watching the Super Bowl on the huge screen in the living room. Kevin is a thoughtful host who took care of every detail!

Exactly as advertised
No surprises based on description. Close enough to mountains for affordable ski accommodations. Animals were a plus. Good communication and helpfulness when needed.

Beautiful location near Aspen
Good location of property with animals wondering about-chickens, goats and other dogs! Would caution other dog owners that if your dog is not use to farm animals, it might be a bit stressful, same with small children. There’s a pound in the backyard, stay vigilant! Not a fan of NOT being able to lock either sliding glass door. It just felt unsafe, not just from humans but wildlife-bear intruders. Trash is not secure or in bear proof trash area! It’s right outside of unlocked sliding glass door. Unit is very exposed to outside with large glass windows with no privacy shades or curtains. It gets uncomfortably hot during the day. There is no over head lighting which is also strange and dark at night (only lamps scattered about). Property could use a good deep clean! View from windows would be spectacular if they were clean!! Kitchen and bathrooms were not clean on arrival. Dishwasher is not properly installed. Coffee maker was broken. As far as other VRBOs, the personal toiletries in bathroom and leftover kitchen spices and other food items were not expected or welcome. Not a standard VRBO kitchen or bathroom which is void of other people’s stuff. There is no TV or cable to unit. It would be nice to have the option of a TV in main room and bedrooms. Let visitors decide to watch TV or go without. Overall, this could be an outstanding VRBO in the Aspen area but it needs some TLC, major cleaning and updates to compete with other VRBOs in the area!

I was raised overseas, attended Harvard, and worked as a creative director in NY for Apple , IBM, Silicon Graphics, and other early tech companies. On the NGO side, I designed the online face of RFK Jr's Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance.
After many years on the East Coast, my family and I headed to the Aspen area. (Where else can you find wildlife, endless outdoor activities, and rugged beauty combined with the cultural and intellectual depth of a big city? ) Upon arriving, I founded the Aspen Science Center, focused on STEM education and outreach. ACES, our gifted minority summer program, physics BBQs, and Physics Cafes are well-attended institutions in the valley. Our paradisical ranch, close to the wilderness as well as the hustle and bustle of Aspen, lent itself perfectly to raising two wonderful, engaged, multifarious daughters, who are now off to college. Having enjoyed B&Bs while touring through Europe, I thought it would be fun to offer this unique wild/civilized experience to visitors ( and their animals). Let's see!

Why they chose this property

Painted Pony is the perfect vacation hideaway. You are minutes from world-class hiking, fishing, skiing, rafting, the X Games, jazz concerts....you name it, we are near it! The great thing though, is when you want serenity and escape from all of the activities, the reflecting pond, pastures, outdoor patio tables and furry creatures are waiting to offer a more serene style of entertainment.

What makes this property unique

I'm guessing there are not too many Airbnbs where you can get up close and personal with friendly goats, alpacas, horses, and donkeys--and enjoy fresh free-range farm eggs from our own bevy of feathered beauties! (They lay in the spring through early fall--once it gets chilly, they take the season off). It is a uniquely enjoyable experience. Hanging out with humans gets tiresome. Communing with goats? Never!
