New Cottage with private bedroom, new bathroom, living room, great kitchenettet
My husband Tom and I bought the farm in 2000 as a getaway from Richmond, we loved this area so much we sold our home in Richmond and moved to the farm full time in 2001. We lived in the original farm cottage that dates back to the Civil War, which is now Shade Tree Cottage. The Little House was once my office and then a storage shed after we built another home on the farm just down the hill. We had Tennessee Walking Horses, Jack Russell dogs and a donkey when the farm was active. Now the horses are gone and we only have 1 Jack Russell left, but now we have 54 hens that provide us and the Cottages with fresh free range eggs. We have enjoyed having guests in the Cottages and we try to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. Thanks for visiting The Little House at Shade Tree Cottage. Midge and Tom Dreelin
Why Midge chose Gordonsville
If you love nature and especially birds, you will love sitting on the screened porch. The bird feeders are always full and birds are always visiting. In the early evening you may see deer grazing in the pasture or Canadian geese on a fly by.
What makes this Cottage unique
You are close to lots of historic attractions, restaurants and wineries, but you will feel like you're in the middle of the country. Even though we usually have a nice breeze in the summer, sometimes a little A/C is appreciated. We have a wonderful central heating and AC system in the Little House for your comfort.

We enjoyed our four night stay on the way to Florida. It was not too far from Monticello or Schuyler. The cottage is decorated very nicely and everything is spotlessly clean. The bagels and cream cheese were a nice touch. Bed was comfortable. If you need Internet it was sometimes very slow. We needed a place where we could bring our dog who enjoyed sitting on the screened porch with us while we watched deer.
Lovely Little House
We had a lovely time in Gordonsville. The Little House was just what we needed; just the right size for myself, my husband and our dog. We were in town for a wedding reception, but were also able to take in a wine tasting and wonderful Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum (we were surprised to find such a excellent museum in the little town of Gordonsville). Midge greeted us when we arrived to make sure we were all set for our stay. I would have given the Little House 5 stars across the board if the WiFi had been stronger (or more consistent). Some times we were able to stream video and other times we couldn’t even check our email.
Overall, I would highly recommend The Little House. Sometimes it’s great to unplug.
Midge is lovely and very fun to chat with, and the little house is a great place to stay.
Lovely Time at the Little House
Midge was very welcoming and accomodating. The screened-in porch was a big plus since it rained hard for a little while one day, and I love to be outdoors as much as possible. My dog had a great time investigating the property; it was great giving her that kind of freedom. I gave a 5 stars overall rating because it was an excellent experience: comfortable, relaxing, convenient location, grocery store and Mexican, Italian, Chinese food plus a Subway just a couple of miles away. The 4 stars for location is because you can hear traffic from the street sometimes. I'm a Brooklyn, NY native, so that didn't bother me much, and it's the price you pay for being so close to civilization, but I thought I'd mention it for those who might not want their rural dreamscape fantasy disturbed a bit here and there. But seriously, a lovely place where you feel like you have your own little corner of nature to yourself while knowing that you are not isolated.
Such s peaceful place with the awesome screened in patio for birdwatching and night fireflies everywhere. This couldn’t have been more perfect.
Quiet, peaceful, comfortable, a perfect place for me and my dog
No hitches at all during our two night stay, from reservation and directions through check in, meals, streaming time, sleep and departure. The screened porch provided a restful refuge during a light rain, the field just beyond it great for playing ball and doggie breaks, with songbirds to be heard all around.
