Kimberley is a community of just over 6,000 situated among the Kootenay Rockies of southern British Columbia, Canada. The town has a Bavarian Alps feel and is a hub of activity, yet still somewhat hidden. Plentiful Kimberley Fishing Areas

Wasa Lake in southern British Columbia is among the most highly rated recreational lakes in the East Kootenay region. The Rocky Mountains to the east and Purcell Mountains to the west surround this picturesque lake.

The best luck with fishing on Wasa Lake is by trolling, and the most common catch is large-mouth bass. Wasa Lake also attracts scuba divers exploring the rare fresh-water reef under the water.

Another beautiful, secluded spot for Kimberley fishing is Stoney Lake, where the shoreline is ideal for teaching the kids to fish.

The Hourglass Lakes, 42 km from Kimberley, are known for bullhead, rainbow trout and sucker fish. Whether you are bait-casting, spinning or fly-fishing, your chances of a catch are great.

Upper Hourglass Lake sits 335 m above Lower Hourglass Lake. On the west side, an incredible waterfall plunges from the upper lake, through the forest and onto the bedrock separating the two. If you’re wearing hiking boots and are ready for a challenge, you can navigate up the rocky slope to the spectacular upper lake. There’s also the long route that requires less scrambling.

The Kimberley area also has exceptional river fishing. St. Mary’s River – actually a large stream shallow enough for wading in places – is teeming with cutthroat, rainbow and bull trout. The Skookumchuk River is also shallow enough for wading and perfect for beginning fishers, as well as the experienced angler hoping for a large cutthroat bass.

The Kootenay Trout Hatchery is 40 km from Kimberley in Ft Steele, BC, and is a great place to learn about the many types of fish common to Kootenay’s rivers and lakes. The hatchery stocks hundreds of lakes in southern British Columbia with rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, brook char and white sturgeon every year.

Relax on Kimberley Beaches

The best Kimberley beaches are on Wasa Lake in the Wasa Lake Provincial Park. Lake Wasa is the warmest lake in the Kootenay region, making it great for swimming, and each of its four beaches has a buoyed swimming area. Kimberley’s gently sloping, sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and picnicking. The main beach has changing facilities and washrooms. Wasa Lake’s Horseshoe Beach is the skiers’ beach, with a boat launch nearby on the eastern shore.
