Riad Merstane is a charming and affordable riad in a traditional area of Marrakech-Medina, the old walled city. Behind the ancient door is a tranquil courtyard filled with a profusion of scented plants & flowers which echoes with birdsong. An orange tree provides shade & there is a rose-petal scattered fountain. The large roof terrace, with many exotic plants, has High Atlas Mountain views & is furnished with sun beds, tables & chairs & has a shady pergola for relaxing. There is charming salons with a large open fireplace, an well stocked library, a CD player and a selection of board games. The riad is furnished with traditional fabrics & furniture and the bathrooms and main salon are finished in' tadelakt'. There are 5 en-suite bedrooms all individually decorated & a pretty dining room. All guests are met on arrival in Marrakech by Omar, our Moroccan driver & taken to the riad where they are met by Rachid, our English/French speaking House Manager.

Staff and Services: The house is staffed by Rachid, our helpful English/French speaking House Manager and Rachida, our efficient housekeeper and cook both of whom will ensure that your 'Marrakech experience' is perfect. There is also a full time maid. Rachid can advise on sight seeing and car hire and all transport arrangements as well as booking walking/taxi tours of the city and souks, official guides, spas and hammams as well as restaurants and places to eat to suit all budgets.

A candle-lit traditional dinner can be ordered [before 10 am] to be served in the courtyard, dining room or roof terrace. Wine can be provided if required. [Prices on request].

Cookery sessions with the excellent cook can be arranged [see Tripadvisor reviews!] - prices on request.

A washing and ironing service can be provided. [Rates on request]

The riad is perfect for a house party or group and entertainment such as musicians, dancers and a Moroccan 'feast' can be booked on request for special occasions and celebrations

Getting there: A range of flights now operates to Marrakech, including the National Carrier Royal Air Maroc from London Gatwick or Heathrow. Easyjet and Ryanair also fly from various UK airports as do Thompsons and BMI. British Airways now also fly from Gatwick.

There is an excellent train service from Tangiers in the North linking Casabanca, Rabat and Fez to Marrakech and a good road network from the north links Marrakech to the South including some motorway now. A good coach service runs throughout the country and private 'Grands Taxis' link all towns.

Riad Merstane, at the end of a narrow 'derb' or cul de sac, is in a traditional area in the northern medina. It is a few minutes from the bustling local square of Bab Taghzoute where cars can be parked & there is a convenient taxi rank and many local shops. It is an easy 10 minutes walk to the 'souks' & sights such as the Ben Yousef Medersa & Museum of Marrakech & through them to the legendary Jma' El Fna' square, the heart of the great urban theatre of Marrakech.

In contrast, the European 'New town' has pavement cafes, bars & stylish shops & the 'Palmerie' is pleasant for a stroll with several golf courses, camel rides & other sporting opportunities. Further afield are the High Atlas Mountains-the Ourika Valley, Ouigane gorges, waterfalls at Ouzoud or Djbel Toubkal for trekking- or over the mountains to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert. Closer is 'Le Barrage' a large lake with swimming and sports facilities & the breezy enchanting beach resort of Essaouira is 2.5hrs by road

Other Activities: Shopping in the souks and visiting museums and old palaces. Also spas and hammans as well as restaurants

Golf: Marrakech has some excellent golf courses with 3 nearby - about 15 minutes car drive - in the Palmerie. The Golf d'Amelkis Club hosts the Moroccan open championships in April and has an ultra modern championship course, while the Golf Palmerie Palace Club has probably the best course in the region with very well maintained holes. The hotal also has horse and camel riding, Quad biking, tennis and swimming. The Royal Golf Club is the oldest with a real sense of tradition and stunning High Atlas Mt views.Handicap certificates are not required. There are also many new courses etc under construction.

Ski: Oukiameden at 2650metres high in the High Atlas Mts and about 70 km from Marrakech has several lifts and runs, with an impressive black run but snow can be unreliable and it is generally unsophisticated. However ski touring can be arranged from Imlil just below Mt Toubkal using a mule and a refuge at 3500 metres - with trekking around 7 peaks and untouched powder .
